How many CP in Piercing provides the equivalent gain of Sharpened Legendary Weapons?

Also, where is the point of diminishing returns with penetratrion?

As a numeriphobe, I'd like to know this as well.

100 points in Piercing gives 5281 which is the same as two sharpened swords or one sharpened greatsword. Or were you asking for an ideal CP distribution?

    PvE
10,000 Penetration vs Light Armor targets
15,000 Penetration vs Medium Armor targets
20,000 Penetration vs Heavy Armor targets and most Bosses

A tank with Pierce Armor gives Major Breach/Fracture 5280 Penetration, 2/2 Concentration with 7 Light Armor grants 4884 Spell Penetration, dual wield or 2H with Sharpened provides 5160 Penetration, Minor Breach/Fracture adds another 1320 Penetration, and Truly Superb Glyph of Crushing adds 1622 Penetration for 5 seconds.

That comes to a total of 13,382 Physical and 18,266 Spell Penetration.

@Asayre I kind of just wanted to understand the stat, and get a better grasp of what is meant by"14% penetration" and "add 79
    penetration".

How does it fit into damage? Let's say I've a legendary sharpened Bow with Crusher enchant, and legendary 2H Maul
Nirnhoned with irresistible damage enchantment. I have 37 CP going into penetration, 31.5K Stamina, and 3000 weapon
    damage

I light attack weave Focus Aim, causing minor breach, swap to my two-handed bar and use my gap closer, then activate Noxious/Burning Breath, causing major breach.

What would be the effect of my attacks on a heavy armor clad opponent? And on someone wearing light armor?

I guess I'm trying to figure out (A) How is damage treated when penetration is smaller than resistance?  (B) How is it
treated when it exceeds resistance, and C) whether consecutive hits have a cumulative effect towards weakening resistance?

663 resistance is equivalent to 1% mitigation. So 15,000 resistance/663 is equivalent to 22.6% mitigation.

From what I understand Resistance is reduced by Debuffs first, then % penetration, then flat penetration.

So if a target has 15,000 physical resistance. You apply both Major(-5280) and Minor Fracture(-1320) and reduce phys resistance to 8400. Now if you have a sharpened Mace in the DB patch your attacks would ignore another 20% and reduce a further 5160 (Sharpened Trait).

    So 8400 * 0.80(mace)= 6720 - 5160 (sharpened)= 1560

    So 1560/663= 2.35% mitigation.

    22.6 - 2.35= 20.25% mitigation reduction with Major/Minor Fracture and a Sharpened Mace

Basically penetration is very powerful and easy to come by. IMO you are better off investing in Mighty, Precise Strikes, and Thaumaturge because you can get so much penetration from other sources, and have less options when it comes to boosting your own damage. Also on Light and Medium armor targets you can reduce their resistance at or close to zero without wasting points in Piercing.

Okay. So the remainder is essentially a somewhat arbitrary number that equates to the percentage of incoming damage that
the armor in question will prevent. If penetration is greater than resistance, then the blow hits fully. Thank you for the info!

What I actually use is a Sharpened Greatsword and a Precise Bow. I use my bow primarily for applying AOE and Poison to
adds, so I went precise thinking that it would likely help me more with quickly clearing junk mobs, while my Sharpened blade
would serve as an effective single target for bosses. I do typically slot and use Burning Breath, and I currently have 20 out of
150 Mage constellation CP in Piercing.
