Need Advice Magicka Templar Build Maelstrom

Glorious_Basterd
I am trying to make a build suitable for Maelstrom Arena with my Dark Elf Magicka Templar. I like the idea of running dual wield on both bars, but I am open to using a restoration staff (I have the maelstrom resto staff with precise) on my back bar. I have heard of so many different builds and sets being run on Templar's. I hear the Scathing Mage set is the best in slot with Volkin Skoria and the Willpower set. Until I can get all this gear farming (for months probably) I would like to make something for the time being that deals a lot of damage and can sustain a long fight.

I am running my own build atm and I don't know much about Templar"s. I got him to Vet16 months ago and never really played on him since.

Currently, I am running (everything is legendary except the swords and jewelry):

x5 Twice Born Star (Divines with Shadow and Thief Mundus Stone)
x4 Winterborn (3 Jewelry: 2 Healthy, 1 Arcane with Spell Power Enchants and Gloves with Divines)
x3 Vicious Death (Divines Belt and 4 Precise Swords)

The health from my Winterborn set and TBS have me at 19,790 with 38,248 Magicka and 2,667 spell damage with buffs. I feel once I hit 501 Champion Points (at 465) my sustain would be enough with this build. However, when fighting anything with a lot of resistances (bosses for example) I don't feel like I'm doing a whole lot of damage. Especially with Puncturing Sweeps and most claim that is their best DPS ability. I've been messing around with his skills and I'm starting to feel comfortable with my bars looking like this:

Front Bar:

Puncturing Sweeps
Inner Light
Repentance (for the extra Magicka Regeneration)
Radiant Glory
Channeled Focus
Ultimate: Shooting Star (Plan to use Barrier with Magicka Aid once I get it)

Back Bar (trying to keep some range in the mix):

Honor The Dead
Inner Light
Repentance
Reflective Light
Dark Flare
Ultimate: Shooting Star

I'm on console so it's hard to tell you the kind of damage I'm doing. My Sweeps are usually critically hitting around 5k (with buffs) per tick on lower resistant mobs. I have my champion points spread out with:

70 Elemental Expert
15 Spell Erosion
70 Thaumaturge
100 Arcanist
55 Magician
56 Elemental Defender
34 Hardy
34 Thick Skinned
31 Quick Recovery

Any ideas on how to improve my damage and make this acceptable for Maelstrom? Is it my gear holding me back and/or Champion Points? I haven't even attempted running Maelstrom with him as I feel against bosses he won't be able to handle it.

If you already have a Maelstrom weapon, you might want to heed Nifty's advice more than mine. My guide is more so geared for those players seeking to beat it rather than compete for a high score.

My quick impressions would echo Asmal's with respects to gear: Willpower jewelry + some other gear combination is better than 4 Winterborn (I think 2 Valkyn is very strong on a templar, 2 Torug's rounds that out nicely).

Make Rush of Agony "Monsters only." People should not be consecutively crowd controlled in a PvP setting. Period.

While I haven't done it on a magplar, this should be pretty similar to mag DK.

Here's a link to @Joy_Division 's guide to vMA, since you get a section for templars.

I woud recommend dropping the 3 vicious death jewelry, as willpower is BiS. Now, it's absolutely doable to do it with your current setup. You may want to consider replacing Winterborn by Skoria x2, Torug x2, but again, it's not mandatory. No opinion on Scathing mage, TBS and Julianos are fine. Having gold weapons makes a pretty significant difference in DPS, so if you have tempers for it... Otherwise, it's still doable without.

You probably want to run a destro staff, at least on your backbar, since ground DoTs are very useful for some fights, as you can drop those, and focus on staying alive (Wall of elements -morphed to Elemental Blockade- is a powerful tool) while still dealing significant damage.

You messed up your CPs a bit, and posted 2 different values for Elemental Expert. That said, I'd recommend investing more points in Hardy / Elemental defense, since those help you increase your overall mitigation, and survive an attack that would have otherwise been lethal, and you can probably optimize the offensive CPs more (I don't remember the exact setup, so won't comment on that).

What I would recommend is to use your casual godmode Harness magicka (aka the most overpowered defense in PvE against magicka), since it helps surviving extreme bursts while helping sustain.

Otherwise, looks good enough with this setup. But don't worry too much about the build, as knowing which target to prioritize, and positioning yourself are very important factors.

    X5 twice born (thief shadow)
    X4 magnus
    resto staff
3 willpower spl dmg enchants unless you're having regen issues (I had around ~400 cp when I beat vmsa with mag temp for 1st time)

    5 1 1 for undaunted passive

My cp setup (kind of a mess but seems to work for me):

    Blue
X75 thaumaturge (getting the exploiter passive for having 75 points in the ritual tree)
    X73 elemental expert
    X18 elf born
    X1 spell erosion

    Green
    X75 magician
    X79 arcanist
    X13 tumbling

    Red
    X2 spell shield
    X100 elemental defender
    X27 hardy
    X28 thick skinned
    X10 quick recovery

    Tri stat food
    Spl power pots

    Duel wield bar:
dawnbreaker of smiting (Mage guild line not 10 :( )
Inner light, radiant glory, punc sweeps, channel focus, toppling charge ( I change out toppling on stage 3 for purifying ritual)
    Resto:
Proxy det, blazing spear shards, rapid regen, inner light, healing ward

Always have proxy, rapid regen, channeled focus up
Healing ward for "oh snap" moments
Use blazing spear to cc mobs
Toppling charge as interrupt and gap closer

I don't use power ups and die a lot but
1st time I cleared: 0 score (used save feature)
    2nd: 180k (1:56 time)
    3rd: 400k (1:36 time)

For run 2 I was awarded a precise resto so now I never run out of magicka with rapid regen up

Once I got the resto staff switched out Magnus for 2 torugs 1kena 1 monster shoulder with max health

    My Templar is argonian lol

The more times you die on a certain part the more it's burned into your memory what to do on a certain round/stage so practice

Thanks for pointing that out. I meant Elemental Defender on the second one. Fixed it.

Thanks for the advise guys. I will check out those threads and adjust things.
