    PvE, easily.

I've been playing MMORPG's since they first started, as it says in my sig. Needless to say, I've been playing in MMO's since before the FPS kiddos ever whined about getting some sort of PvP introduced into the genre. I've also been a steadfast, vocal opponent to any type of PvP in MMORPG's. IMO, PvP goes completely against the grain of what an MMO is at it's very core.

I also know that the largest (best guess-timate is 80+%) population of players in any MMO is found in the PvE side of the games, and that can be found industry-wide. PvP could evaporate from every MMO tomorrow, and most every MMO on the market right now would keep plugging along just fine.

If people want the Massively Multiplayer aspects but mixed with FPS PvP, then MOBA's are probably a better fit for those players rather than an MMORPG. Those games are designed with PvP at their core, and those FPS players can leave the MMO genre in peace.

PvP has zero place in any MMORPG.

You sound like an old man that can't handle the fact that things evolve and change over time.

Things don't always change for the best my son :)

Does not matter, they still change. My point stands.
And regarding good or bad: That is subjective.
Sure, things "change and evolve". That's why MOBA's were created, and most every FPS is more "Online Shooter" than focused on the campaign.

Buy my point still stands as well.

PvP goes against the very core nature of what an MMORPG is. A massive, majority focus on PvE. Quest depth, variety of content, and allowing for immersive Role Playing byt the design of the world. PvP has no place in that, and adding PvP into the MMORPG genre was a mistake that developers are only now beginning to correct.

And they're correcting it by focusing more and more on the PvE aspects; and less and less on the PvP.

They're letting FPS's and MOBA's have the PvP niche. MMORPG's are slowly transitioning back to PvE-only experiences, and that transition cannot complete itself soon enough IMO.

Please, I used to log in the UO server with a 56kb/s dial-up modem. PvP has ALWAYS been a core feature of MMORPGs for the simple reason that effective sprite AI is difficult to code, other human players gives more challenge with less coding. Having PvP in an MMORPG make it so that devs don't have to pop out a dungeon every week, and a raid every month, to keep endgame challenging and not stale.

Multiplayer games over lan and Internet (not console on split screen) started out with competing games, not cooperative.

Let's not go there, shall we ?

The OP posed an hypothetical question meant to create a conversation, He/She does not have the power to remove one aspect or the other, so, let's just chill.

As for transitioning, it's never gonna happen, PvP is cheaper to make than PvE, as you just have to maintain it, and keep it working.

From a marketing standpoint, and a development standpoint, removing PvP, in favor of an all-out cooperative PvE game is just not a good investment. Story driven, PvE only, MMORPG are just too expensive to make, and that is a fact, not an opinion. You need voice actors, writers, designers, developers, to make new content with regularity, where PvP you only need to make a set of rules and put 2 or more people in the same area, they are going to create hours and hours of content on their own just by fighting each other.

That's what history tells us, and, well, historia est magistra vitae.

    Just saying.

If you voted PVE, have you ever spent much time in PVP? And I don't mean running around by yourself, waiting to get tagged by everybody else traveling in two's or more. If this poll was back in December, I would have voted PVE. In January I started running with a PVP guild, and now most of my game time is in Cyrodiil. PVE is fun, but if I only had one, hands down it's PVP.

I have to say, I am surprised that about 1 out of 3 would choose PvP over PvE, if that choice would have to be made. Shows to me, that even in an Elder Scrolls game there is a significant need for PvP content, I would have expected it to be much lower.

I do not play role playing games for PvP. If I wanted serious PvP I would be playing MOBAs or FPS games.

I hate PvP in RPGs. Our skills and abilities always gets nerfed and messed with because of PvP balance. I wouldn't mind PvP if they could separate abilities from PvE/PvP but that's not going to happen so I have to continue to be annoyed that PvP is in this game to stay.

I love PvP, but ZOS is incapable of taking their own advice and giving skills different PvE and PvP effects (see Teleport Strike). They will never balance it.

    Elder Scrolls ---> PvE

Yeah I'm the guy 1vXing like a madman but I'll still take PvE ANYDAY over PvP. No lag, toxicity (or at least less), bugs could be fixed and balance would be much easier. Many amazing TES areas could be visited with faster DLC drops since PvP's impossible balance could be ignored (they'd probably implement Spellcrafting and a new class faster too).

Look at it like this. Magicka DK is perfectly fine at DPS in PvE so they will not receive necessary PvP buffs. Likewise Magicka Sorc is fine at PvP so the class will never be updated, will always suck at PvE in like everyway (even spamming Overload Sorcs are not at all on par DPS-wise, Healer/Tank Sorcs are also terrible) and will continue to suck in PvP outside of like one cookie cutter build.

PvE and PvP can't be balanced on the same skillset. I'd 100% take PvE though. It's actually stable and not in a completely skill-less and s*** state atm.

MMORPGs with multiple playable FACTIONS need PvP, alongside PvE. The two things are not mutually exclusive, they can't be. A basic rule of storytelling is that a story, to be interesting, needs conflict. Games tell a story, therefore a game need conflict. In a story driven game, said conflict is provided in the story itself, but it can't just keep going, you need to reach a climax, with the final confrontation with the antagonist.

Problem is, once you've done that, the story is over, game's done, next game please, I might be coming back for a DLC, unless something interesting happens. To be worth the investment, an MMO needs players to keep playing.

See where I'm going with that ? PvP provides that bit conflict needed to keep the game interesting in the long run, while more PvE content is produced. Also, PvP is cheaper to maintain, and THAT is the reason why so few PvP content is ever released, because PvE content requires time to develop, while PvP just keep itself going, giving the devs some breath to make stuff.

Fact is, MMORPGs can't have only PvE or only PvP, the two aspects are both needed to keep the game going. In PvE you learn how to use your abilities in a safe environment, you get to play The Chosen One(TM) for a little bit, you eventually get to the endgame, which last a bit, until the next DLC is released, and the interest is up again.

Problem is, PvE content has little or no replay value, with the exception of dungeons/raids/trials/arenas, or whatever it is, but, even that, you can only play them for a number of times.

Now, you might think you won't mind repeating the same dungeon over and over on a daily basis, but I guarantee it, you're either a 1% or you just don't know it yet. PvE content has very low replay value. To keep it interesting you need to keep releasing, and releasing costs money, a lot of money. Voice actors, graphic designers, concept artists, writers, developers, creatives, all of them expect money for their work.

PvP cost next to nothing, in comparison. You make an area with a few bumps, a castle here and there, then let players get in and beat each other. Fun for all the family since people had time for entertainment (seriously, look it up).

Conclusion is, The OP has no power to remove either of the 2 sides, PvE will always have precedence in terms of content, PvP will always be present in MMORPGs, and this whole thread, is once again about who's right on the Internet. I have no illusion that hardcore PvE's Stout Defenders(TM) will agree with me, my only hope is that someone was entertained by it.

    1) I care nothing for baby seals. Club away, indigenous northern peoples. Club away. Club like cave men even...

    2) It still remains true. If you want PvP in an MMO environment, play a MOBA or FPS. PvP goes against the very core of what an MMORPG is all about.

    3) And in response to someone above; yes, removing/limiting PvP and focusing on PvE (which most major MMO's and future MMO's are actually doing) is still cost effective, and those MMO's would barely see a blip in their monthly/annual financial flow.

PvE keeps MMO's alive and well. It's been a fact for decades, it will still be a fact in the future.
