Higher DPS on a 2Hander? (Maul/Sword)

With the changes to Nirn and Sharpened, how would this play out?

Nirnhoned Maul or Sharpened Greatsword? Or, stack, Sharpened Maul or Nirn Greatsword?

I cannot test the PTS, on console.

Nirnhoned might be better vs a shield stacking situation. And in this game of min-maxing having a balance between two doesn't seem like the good option so i would suggest sharpened maul.

From what i tested Nirn sword is a better option for PVP (in general) since everyone will use damage shields now. As for PVE im not really sure which one has higher dps but they are pretty close.

So armor pen doesn't do anything vs shields then?

Wouldn't what Karakon suggests be better if that's the case, ie. Nirn Sword?

I currently have a Maelstrom Sharpened Maul and plan to stick with it.

Shields are not affected by player armor resistance and take full damage. Even though the extra damage from Nirnhoned is nice against shields, I don't think the amount you get from Nirnhoned will outweigh the benefit of sharpened.

Thought process is that an extra 200ish weapon damage will probably not increase my tooltip damage enough to break a shield in less hits, and best case would make their shield break in one less hit. Also, with the reduced 6 second shield duration, it is likely that players will drop their shield from time to time in combat.

On the other hand, if I have an opponents shield broken, I want to do as much damage as possible while it is down to finish them off before they can reapply it. Not to mention, even though shields will be more popular, I doubt that everyone will be using them.

As with everything in this game, one will be preferred over the other in certain situations. But I think the penetration will be preferred in the majority of situations.
