I've been away from the game for a while. Veteran Rank Question

robot_camel87
I've been reading that Veteran Ranks are being removed. It's already happened on the PC from what I understand (I'm on console). I can't find any other info in this forum on it. What exactly is happening with Veteran Ranks? Thanks to anyone who answers this.

veteran ranks will be removed and the chars wil have a base level of 50. The CP will take over for progression and gear. v16 will now be 160cp gear etc. every 10cp is approx 1 vet level from how they are doing it. so v1 is 10cp(this one makes no sense to me) v2 is 20cp and so on. This will happen with the next dlc it is on pts now for pc users to test out. once they release DB the patch will hit pc then consoles.

It has not been done on PC, nor will it for a few months. It is only on PTS.

Simply. It has not happened yet. Think May 31, when the Dark Brotherhood patch comes out it's supposed to happen. Also removing vet ranks means basically all your vet characters are just "vet." There is no V1, or V2, or V3. You don't earn xp for levels after level 50 just xp for championship points. Which means all your vet characters will be the same level and the strength of all them is determined by how many championship point you have on your account, since championship points are an account thing and all your characters get to use all your championship points however you choose to assign them.

that is the basics of it. for details see the patch notes for the up the upcoming Dark Brotherhood patch.

& When Veteran ranks are removed all your characters basically become the same level of once they finish the main story, since all the champion points are earned for everyone!

Actually we've been Lv50 all along, we just had a sort of second level type after that, and now that's going away and they're instead measuring our "second level" with CPs in increments of 10.

So I'm VR4 and I have almost 90 CP so will that make my Character VR9 essentially?

    Correct.

Also, if you have more than one vet level character, since you have about 90 CPs (and probably gaining more quickly), ALL of them will be the equivalent of what is now VR9 (i.e. cp90), since Champion points are shared across your account.

Sweet well that's a big jump I'll have to save Crafting material so I can make CP 90 gear once the Update is released in June for Console.

You also get 2.5 CP bonus for each VR you have on your highest character. So if the VR4 is your highest, you just got an extra 10 CP bringing you up to VR10 equivalent.

I'm glad you asked this. So it's in our interest to level up alts, let's say a lvl 43 and another lvl 40, to vet ranks before DB so that they will also be vet16 (if you already have at least 160 CP) ?

I don't really want to take the time to level them, but if that's the case I probably should.

This is what I did, but you can always level them later and as soon as they hit 50, BOOM, they're v16-equivalent.

I don't think there's anything saying you have to do it before DB, but at whatever point you do get them to 50, they'll automatically have the same number of CP and therefore be the same level as all the other vet characters on your account.

    robot_camel87,
The PTS patch notes have a LITTLE information about how the transition works from Vet Ranks to CP ranks, but the most important part of the article stated that a deeper explanation will be coming out soon (in the next few weeks anyway). It's easy enough to understand character scaling to cp160 instead of Vr16, and how you get level-based skill and attribute points in the new system (i.e. all before you reach L50 now, instead of some of them from gaining Vet ranks), but there's a lot of other related stuff that has not been explained yet either..... For example:

    1. Will current vet rank 5 gear now be similarly scaled to cp50 instead, or will all current Vet rank gear just be Level 50? more to the point, would a vr13 Master's weapon now become just as good as a vr16 Master's weapon, due to the change of scaling? (There are some other lower level sets which would also become attractive if all L50 gear is similarly scaled).
    2. My current vr16 gear sets will likely become "cp160", which is fine for me because I have capped my CPs. What happens though for the possible case (albeit very unlikely) where an old returning player has a Vr14 or vr16 character, but only 70 CPs? Does that mean they can't wear their current vr14 (now cp140) gear?
    3. The new max level of cp160 is planned to increase in later DLC updates. Is this going to be a case of actually ADDING levels (e.g. a new cp170 and cp180 level), or just increasing the cp requirements to be at max level? (For the latter, a simple case would just be to double the amount of CP's for each post-L50 "cp level", e.g. first new level would be cp20 instead of cp10, then cp40, cp60, etc. up to a new max of cp320 for the equivalent of today's vr16. This is just a hypothetical scaling up amount, there is no reason to use that amount instead of any other).
    4. In a later DLC, if the CP requirement to be at max rank is increased, what happens to all my max rank gear that was converted to level cp160 when the DB DLC came out? Does my Valkyn Skoria helm (etc.) stay scaled up to the new max rank, or does it stay at a face value of cp160, which might be the new hypothetical equivalent of vr8, i.e. forcing us to grind for (or remake, or somehow improve) top level gear all over again?

I don't really want to take the time to level them, but if that's the case I probably should.

There is no real reason to level up other alts to vet ranks before DB, other than the usual ones of:
    1. level them up if you like to play them (more than your current main)
    2. level them up if you like to try out different classes, factions, races, or builds
    3. level them up if you need the skill points on those alts (e.g. to invest in hirelings for passive income)
    4. level them up if you want more characters to be able to run a daily random premium dungeon (e.g. for the 101k xp per character).

Remember that any time spent levelling up a pre-L50 lowbie means that you are not earning Champion Points with your Vet level main character. If you are already at cap, or have spent all your enlightenment for the day, this is not a big deal though. (I didn't start this way myself, but currently recommend getting at least one character to max level, so that you can try out more aspects of the game).

So, wait. Does that mean since I don't have 160 cp yet, that my current V16's can no longer wear the gear they are currently wearing until I grind out another 50 cp's? That's not cool at all.

    A. Veteran Ranks aren't really being removed. They're just being renamed. Mobs will now have Champion Point levels. Gear will now have Champion Point levels. XP will have diminishing returns based on Champion Point Levels.

The only real difference is every character is up to your max CP level when it hits 50. But any notion of "hit 50 and it's just horizontal progression from there" is going off of very old information.

CP are Veteran Ranks, only shared.

    B. This is what I get for taking a year break right after CP was introduced. My highest-level VR character is much higher level than my CP level will be. I'd better grind the hell out of CP on lower-VR characters, or I risk not being able to wear my character's gear on May 31.
