How is a set bonus computed?

Suppose I am using several items of the same set, but of different level or quality. A concrete example are those sets which mix armor or weapons with jewelry and cannot therefore be fully upgraded to gold quality, like briarheart, willpower, footman, etc. In this case, the tooltips show different values while the items are in the inventory, but of course when they are equipped they give a single bonus.
How is this bonus computed? (average, minimum, maximum, majority, or something else, of the individual values?)

I believe it is the average of all items in the set you are wearing. So it does pay to upgrade what items you can even if you can't easily upgrade your jewelry.

For an overly-simplified example, let's say that the tooltip value for a gold piece is 100 weapon damage, and the tooltip value for a purple piece is 90 weapon damage. Wearing a mix of purple and gold would result in an average of the tooltip amounts. So let's assume 3 gold pieces and 2 purple ones:

3 x 100 = 300
2 x 90 = 180
480 / 5 = 96

So wearing this gear would increase your WD by 96. Again, this is a very simplistic example. In practice, the bottom-line WD value is different due to passives (such as a passive that increases WD by X%).

I believe it picks the weakest 5 as well. So if you were wearing 6 peices of one set, 5 of which are gold and one purp, it calculates as if only 4 gold 1 purp.
