Please balance Vet16 resources and writs, especially with Rubedo Leather!

I currently have three Veteran characters, a Vet16, Vet12, and a Vet8. My Vet16 is my crafter, my Vet12 is more my main character.

When I finally reached Vet16 on my crafter I was surpirsed to discover that the cost in Ruby-based resources jumps up incredibly from around 15 pieces to make an item to 150. I was also surprised that the drop rate for Ruby-based materials seems low. I accepted this as part of the game, though a bit annoying...

The thing I am noticing with the Writs at V16 is that when I get orders to make Rubedo leather goods I spend around 15 Rubedo Leather to make the item for the writs, and in return I get an item which I deconstruct for 1 piece. So each time I do a writ I'm losing around 14 pieces. I have very little Rubedo leather. I try and farm it and I get a few pieces. When I deconstruct those I get 1 or 2 pieces back. I don't have a huge amount of game hours per day so sitting farming for Reubedo leather drops is not feasable for me. The difference between Rubedo leather is that you don't seem to get it in the survey rewards. You get Rubedite ore (heavy armour), and ancient silk (light armour), but not Rubedo leather (medium armour). As my characters wear medium armour this is a problem.

Not only am I struggling to save enough to make Vet16 gear (like everyone else), With medium gear resources I am actually taking 1 step forward and 5 steps back. I am now having to avoid doing Clothier writs that include Rubedo leather as I'm just losing it to writs and not gettting enough back.

This does not seem very balanced. Is this the same for everyone at Veteran 16 or does it get better? Does the community feel it needs to be more balanced?

Surely your solution is do not do the clothing writ?

I can think of no good reason to do writs, I get ripped off every time. They are a complete waste IMHO.

You're on PS4, so you don't have Update 9 (aka, the base game update that is coming alongside Thieves Guild). Things will get much better with U9, since now the new mats are a guaranteed drop in Wrothgar, Hew's Bane, and Cyrodiil, if you have the craft maxed. We're now swimming in this stuff, and prices are free-falling.

I haven't been able to get into the game just yet (waiting on a new rig), how much are they falling by? :open_mouth: That sounds promising that I can just buy them without breaking my bank!

On my main account i have over 1200 ancestor sik............and about 80 rubedo leather. I have 1 stamina build with 1 set, and the rest (7) are magicka with 3 light armour sets for them. You should be able to get rubedo leather from cloth surveys as well as ancestor silk.

There is a cave directly north of Orsinium with a ton of Harpys. You can get over 50 rubedo scraps an hour in there.

Exactly, that was my point! I have avoided doing the clothing writ, which shows that it can't be meant to work that way!

Sadly, farming seems to be the way to go when it comes to collecting leather materials. There's a fair few creatures that you can hunt to get rubedo scraps (werewolves, harpies, etc), and in some cases you may also find a lot of the humanoid mobs wear leather armor you can break down to improve things further. But it will always be something you'll need to hunt for.

I feel for ya, though, with the limited time to invest in equipment hunting. The only thing I can suggest there is to shift your perception a bit, and don't try and "keep up with the pack," as it were. Collect materials at your own pace. Just because a bunch of other people spend 18 hours in a row for a week straight (or something) maxing out their gear doesn't mean you should follow suit.

I'm VR16 wearing VR15 equips, mainly because of a lack of resources (especially enchant runestones). I'm not in any great hurry to max out. I'll get there eventually, I just need to be patient.

Rubido leather is pain to gather, and certainly ingots, ancestor silk and wood are much more plentiful. The best place I found to rack up some leather is running the sewers and imperial city in a group, the sheer volume of leather goods dropped from monsters soon adds up to lots of it from deconstructing.

When TG launches on console, you won't have to worry about it anymore. All Orsinium mats scale to the crafter level. No more killing everything in Wrothgar with high hopes, and only getting Shadowhide. All Rubedo, all day.

The equipment crafting writs aren't really worth doing when you max out the skill. It's rare to get anything worth in return for the high end materials your giving up making that stuff. The only writs I still do are the provisioning ones, still hunting a few recipes. Plus the occasional enchanting one.

Is this true? Seriously I have a massive hoard still to sell with a week left. Over 1k in each mat lol. Been far to greedy.

I disagree with this. I have 3 max level crafters that do daily writs. It takes less than 5 min to complete and turn in all 6 (provided you already have the provisioning and alchemy items in inventory), and return almost 4k gold per toon per day, a handful of gold tempers and a dozen or more surveys per week for the valuable, high end mats and more tempers. It's well worth it for me. I've earned a nearly obscene amount of gold selling tempers, mats, herbs and crafted pots.

I stopped doing the equipment writs when my characters all got to the point where they would need rubedo hide, rubedite, ancestor silk, and ruby ash. Even before that I didn't find the returns on the equipment writs to be really worth the time and mats put in, so I would only do them here and there (the consumables writs are another story, and are totally worth it always).

Now that I'm collecting top-tier mats way faster (thanks to TG) I should maybe give the equipment writs another shot.

I just did a blacksmithing writ. I was rewarded with a tempering alloy (worth 9000 gold on XBox) and a survey. The survey yielded me just over 30 rubedite ore which yielded 30 rubedite ingots (worth 6000), and another tempering allow (9000). One writ yielded 24,000 gold of resources selling on the low end. The writ cost me about 5000 gold worth of materials (10 rubedite sells for about 2000, voidstone is negligible, common racial style stone should be free at this point effectively). I'll easily clear 19,000 gold for 15 minutes of work (5 minutes crafting, 10 looking for the survey). I know this is high end example but writs can be very profitable.

It can be profitable, however the point of the post was mainly to do with rubedo leather, and the unbalance in amount that can be gained verses the amount you need to spend to do the writs containing rubedo leather. It's also in regards to being able to make Veteran 16 medium armour (rubedo leather), as oppossed to selling for gold. But yeah your right, very profitable in gold terms... though without getting enough rubedo leather, you still run out of it.

The only thing the writs are good for is getting gold tempers. Sending me one rubido leather scrap doesn't impress.
