Question about champion points

So I just got to vr1 and when I get home at night (about 2 am) all I do is grind for about an hour because I feel as if its not enough time to quest and really enjoy the quests. So I just grind out and so far I have gotten about 40 champion points in total and I'm only half way in the experience bar of vr 1.

So my question is, is that a lot? And do you get champion points from questing?

I get all my CPs from questing and I don't grind.

Don't think I had anything close to 40 CPs at VR 1 bc the enlightenment wasn't as generous then as it currently is.

The Champion Point system resembles a few previous systems in other games.

The first points are very low xp required, and then it increases on a linear scale for this game. Around point 440 it will require 400k xp per point (for comparison the first few points are around 30k each). These numbers are without enlightenment.

It's a graduating scale. You only need 34k XP for your first champion point. If you are enlightened, this is divided by 4, so you only need ~8k XP.

Each CP after the first requires a little more and more XP, so that by the time you reach around 330th champion point, it's close to the previous rate of 400k XP for each CP (100k while enlightened). The XP requirement continues to increase gradually until you reach the cap of 501.

When you reach the cap, you continue earning CP, but you can't spend them, and they require a lot more. The 502nd champion point requires more than triple the XP required for the 501st (around 1.7m)
    • ((TotalPoints / (Cap ^ 0.995)) + 0.085) * 400000, where Total Points is how many CP points you’ve earned.
    • If you exceed the cap, the XP required is calculated given the above formula and then multiplied by 1.5.
    • For the first Champion Point (going from 0 Champion Points to 1 Champion Point) 34000 XP is required.

You will really notice the difference around 300 CP, and if you are Stamina build, Unchained passive (unlocked at 360 CP) is huge.

Grinding is much faster, but it's boring obviously. Some quests provide a lot of XP, but you spend too much down time running around between quests where you are not earning anything.

You may want to try to limit your grinding to the period when you are enlightened (earn CP 4x faster), and team up with a partner, use ring of mara, Psijic Ambrosia potion, etc.

Highly recommend this addon MXPV which allows you to track how much XP you are earning per hour, so you can compare different activities, grinding spots, XP buffs, etc. Ideally you want to be earning at least around 500k - 800k XP / hr.

If you consider that when the champion system was introduced all current v14 (max rank) players got 70cp to start from, then 40cp at half way through v1 puts you in a good spot. In the last patch zos introduced a catch-up system meaning the more cp you have the more xp you need to earn more cp. So your current rate of earning will slow down gradually. At 420cp I need over 300k xp to earn a cp. You probably need less than 100k to earn a cp, just guessing. Most of my cp were earned through questing cos I don't really like grinding. Questing is slower than grinding but not by much if you speed quest (spam 'q').
