11 Ways to make ESO go from good to great.

KhaosxReigns
KhaosxReigns
Soul Shriven
I've been playing this game on and off since the early access on the PC days in 2014. I loved this game and this was my first MMO, but after playing other MMOs I started to see a lot of flaws in this game. Don't get me wrong, this game is very good, but I'm going to suggest some ways to make it great.
1) Add PvP Arenas (1v1, 2v2, 1v1v1, 2v2v2 etc)
2) Have GROUP CONTENT in EVERY SINGLE DLC: People don't play an MMO to play alone *cough Maelstrom Arena* they play MMOs because they can play a great game with their friends, but when you take out the friends then it's just not as fun.
3) Make us able to change our characters' Names, Race, Faction, and Features. It shouldn't be too hard to do some of this to be honest, I know for a fact you guys can change names because some of my friends has had it done, but if you make people able to pay for it they will. I HATE my characters name and how he looks and i can't restart because I've had him since day 1 and he has all my Skill Points and Achievements.
4) Make the PvP a little more rewarding. You guys said you were going to put better rewards in the Rewards for the Worthy bags but to be honest they just give about 200 more gold (Which is nothing) and drop less often.
5) More Classes!
6) Make the other builds a little more viable in PvP and PvE. Hybrid players will always be less effective than straight Magicka/Stamina users, which is sad because Hybrid builds are really fun. The glyphs for Hybrids were a good step but it needs something more.
7) Make the more Trials. All my friends LOVE trials, we used to play all night just to get a completion of Sanctum and Hel Ra, we need more big group content cause all the "current" trials have gotten really boring and basically useless now.
8) Don't make gear from Trials/Dungeons irrelevant. I remember just a few months after the trials came out that their gear was basically ineffective again because the crafted gear was SO much better. Find a way to make them balanced or at least not totally irrelevant.
9) Have a way to scale gear somehow. With every level you add to the game all the previous gear becomes outdated. Me and my trials team grinded AA and Hel Ra for MONTHS to get a full set of some of that gear, and now it's completely useless not because it's bad but because it's not Max Level. Have a way to level up our gear or something.
10) Don't make us dependent on set bonuses. Trials and Dungeon gear is totally irrelevant until you get a certain piece number. For example the old AA light armor gear used to be completely useless until 4 pieces or more. And it would take MONTHS to get it sometimes only because you'd keep getting the same pieces you already had. I never completed my AA light armor set because i never got a pair of gloves but have probably deconstructed a thousand boots from AA. The sets don't matter if you can't get the pieces to drop. Make set bonuses matter less or make the just normal no set gear a lot better than it is now.
11) Don't let gear drop twice. If i have a pair of boots from a trial/dungeon i won't want the same pair of boots. I need the other set pieces from the trial/dungeon. Please PLEASE find a way to make it to where set pieces can't drop twice until you have the whole set.

These are all the things i can think of right now to make ESO an Amazing game. And Zenimax people play your game because they love MMOs and they Love Elder Scrolls but stop trying so hard to be an Elder Scrolls Game. Be an Elder Scrolls MMO. No more solo content please, no one wants that in an MMO and if you do make solo content at least release group content too. Sanctum Ophidia was the last trial to be in the game and that was in 2014. We havent had a trial for more than a year now, please add more big group content or at least a group dungeon or two every patch.

Agree with all but 5 and 2. For 5 I would rather see more skill lines that all can use than new classes. And for 2 I guess it is fine with some group content but I personally prefer stuff I can do alone and with group (if I can only choose 1 I go with solo). I don't like forced group stuff or we will get a new IC or calgron.

I would also like to see a way to make all races able to play all things equally good. I don't want to be stuck with a race/faction I don't like because I want to play a certan way. (I would love to play magica but Argonian and khajiit are the only races I like to play and both of them lack good magica racials)

Well, there's a new 12 man trial coming with Thieves Guild, but I would certainly like to see more group dungeons.

    Some very good points.

I am really curious as to what Clockwork City will be.

For #9 they could add a reforge skill for crafter that would upgrade low level gear to high level gear.
#5 it's a must cause people would get bored sooner or later if they is no new classes or skill lines to keep them interested.

Why people play MMOs should NOT be the overriding design determinant as some of us do not play MMOs. A lot of ESO players have never played another MMO. We play Elder Scrolls games.

For many of us, having a persistent character and such a large world with more ES content and lore is the attraction.

The OP is, of course, correct that they need to provide a lot of content to appeal to MMO people who love life at the end game. There are always people looking for a new MMO to try and ZOS wants to attract them. For those of us who love this game but don't care for 'end game' so much, selling us new stories is important and profitable. Heck, there are even people who don't care about end game or about stories. They just care about PvP and just do, sometimes grudgingly, whatever will help them succeed in PvP.

We should avoid assuming everyone thinks like we do.

Personally, I think what would make the game great is stopping with the regular skill rebalancing and changes to combat (like blocking regen, dodge roll nerf), but I understand that the Champion System made those things problematic for people in PvP and something had to be done. Unfortunately, the change they did made me enjoy the game a lot less.

I'd prefer a long overdue rework of some of the current systems/tools over new content, such as

    - inventory/bank management
    - guild management
    - mailbox
    - guild trader ui
    - character statistics
    - crafting stations

Sure, some of these things can be addressed by addons, but not all of them. Not even talking about consoles..

disagree on some parts agree on some:
    1) don't really care but i'm mainly a PvE player, and given the fact that there is so little resource managment it will only emphasise the class imbalance. oh well
    2) i don't agree on every DLC having the NEED to group. there is a large portion of the community who likes the solo questing. grouping in a DLC can lead to what craglorn is today, a barren wasteland with only reason to go there is to grind (a single) material.
    3) faction change will bring bigger issues then you might think up beforehand. the other changes are comming
    4) you have no cost in repair and still get free gold doing the thing you like mkay
    5) beter they make more skill trees so everyone has acces to them. there are people with 8 alts already who might get screwed over by this (and yes i know more character slots are comming "soon" said enough)
    6) i agree with making hybrids work beter only problem is with the way they made the spells and the damage numbers they will either be the way to go or underpowered i guess which is a same. having options is always the best way to go i think
    7) increasing content is never bad, at least there will be a new trial at the next DLC
    8) never make old content irrelevant this means things like cadwell's/ craglorn and the trials should have meaningfull rewards which they lack atm. i also included cadwell's because in the way ZoS is going atm they will be obselete in 1-2 years from now because you can get your skyshards in different area's and quest rewards..... well we know them.
    9) i think they are looking into this atm. we don't have information on this when the vet ranks are removed have to w8 and see
10)would like to see this aswell. only implementing this now will make some combinations with set items and non-set items pretty op i guess. it's the way ZoS decided to go.
    11) i think this would give alot of stress to the servers to keep track of the looting of every single player in the game. rather just heavly improve the RNG and don't put useless endgame traits on purple/legendary items

The reason i say 2 is because the game IS an MMO, even if people don't want it to be it still is, why just cater to people who only like solo content then leave the raiders out in the cold. 2014 Was the last time we got any Trials and we haven't had any GOOD group content in Wrothgar. (Good meaning not public dungeons cause their a joke tbh) I don't oppose things like Maelstrom Arena I'm just saying don't cut out the Trials. It's fine that you guys want to be solo players and stuff but let the people who DON'T like that stuff have something to do also. Trials are useless now and 90% of the gear from dungeons is useless too. I really think that they should have a little bit of EVERYTHING in each expansion and not just one thing for one expansion. Also it's not really fun to make some of the best weapons in the game drop from a SOLO ARENA then make the people who don't like solo content have to get the expansion just to get the best gear to do outdated group content. We all play this game because we love some aspects of it but why only try to change the aspects we like when we could change EVERY aspect of it for the better? All i'm saying is show EVERYONE some love Zenimax. It's been over a year since we had some trials. It's been a long time since PvP's been shown some love (IC is basically Deserted for PvP content wise) and Solo Players need more stuff to do also. RPers idk what will make you guys happy but throw something for them in too. I love this game and I just want it changed for the better. Also fix pvp lag ty :)

I agree but am still undecided about number 2, Craglorn was a great piece of DLC, had great quests and some really well designed areas, but trying to find a group to do them was the hardest bit. Which made the whole bit a bit of a waste and it was a shame to see that.

I thoroughly enjoy the fact that most of this list is not applicable to me in any way.
    1. Wouldn't play them
    2. Wouldn't run 'em...
    3. Wouldn't use Race/Name/Faction but would use feature to change hair cut, add scars, add a beard, then "shave" the beard away...
    4. Would TOTALLY use that!!
    5. Eh... I play a "build" because of the narrative of the build. "Viability" be damned. (which is why I wouldn't play 1 or 2)
    6. Again, wouldn't play them. None of my IRL friends play ESO... and synching schedules with online friends is next to impossible for me.
    7. Gear interests me very little. I cherish the crap gear I get from missions more than any sparkly gear.
    8. THIS would be cool... that way I can keep AND use the crap gear I get from missions!
    9. I don't pay attention to set bonuses anyway
    10. I think there's a better solution to this problem...

Now, after saying all that... I must say that pretty much all of your list sounds pretty solid and I wouldn't object to ZOS putting more focus on this kind of stuff. I can see how it would be good for the game.
What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.
    That's right... Horse.

You must be joking right? Do you know how much Gold you get from PvP? Almost nothing. Yesterday i was fishing for 30 minutes and i made more gold than in the last 2 weeks of PvP. You have to repair the armor in PvE but you also get gold and stuff you can sell from the mobs.

You have no idea how much I agree with this statement. It is like my game is broken, when it comes to getting SPC. I am not going to pretend to estimate how many runs I have of vWGT, but I have 5 helms if that helps with a ball park. All I have ever got are Shoulders and Chests. I have starting Deconing well-fitted shoulders at this point. Think I decon'ed 2 or 3 before I snapped this pic. Silver lining is that I have 4 pieces of Divines, just cant wear more than 2.

Some of these changes have already been announced

    PVP Arenas
    Face / Appearance Change
    Change Racial Passive

And haven't seen any official word on this, but if they are adding a way to change your appearance, I would not be surprised if we also see a character name change scroll at some point for X crowns. Seems like another simple feature that could generate a lot of crown store revenue.

#2 irritates the heck out of me. MMO with solo only content? Shut the front door. What the fudge.

It's now 2016. Seeing how older MMOs have instituted dynamic content, you think ESO could too. We shouldn't have to be locked to single or groups of four only. It should be dynamic to party size.

    1) PvP Arenas...
Would certainly make the PvPlayers happy. And while I likely would hate those arenas, I am not opposed to them having em.
    2) GROUP CONTENT...
So far, there has been. Sorta. Small group content anyways, Orsinium had no dungeon, but two public dungeons instead, and the new world bosses. Would be better to scale more up to V16 (cough, undaunted pledge dungeons, cough), but I hear rumours they will be implementing that someday, so...
I may be a habitual loner, but I do enjoy groupy stuff sometimes. I imagine it almost feels like having friends...
    3) ...able to change our characters' Names, Race, Faction, and Features...
Its coming... But Not Soon Enough! ;)
I really want namechange and appereance change, to make my characters -perfect- correct small stuff that looked different in chargen then live game, or names I sadly haven't spent enough thought at because back when I started I was going "eh, its just gonna be a testbed alt..." but then found them growing on me and now wince every time I see the non-lore-conforming name...
Racechange... will come, many people want it, I see no reason to use it now, but who knows, I might if they ever add some crownstore-races.
Faction change... is a bigger can of worms, and would need a lot more work, thus they are at best "considering it" at this time. But would be cool if done right (defection questline!)
    4) PvP more rewarding...
Agreed, it should ve a viable alternative to level a character, and I especially would love to see rewards for not just those who win, but also for those who tried their best, but just weren't good enough. Because right now the merely mediocre PvPlayers like me often get kicked in the teeth AND have nothing to show for it in cyrodil, making me far less likely to go there, and thus starving the PvP somewhat... when it becomes a "PvP-fanatic only club", its vexing. If i at least got some "participient reward" I might be way more likely to grind my teeth and struggle through all the ganking...
    5) More Classes!
I'm all for that, especially if done as, say... Class Morph? ;)
Because as I always state, just adding classes with really annoy a lot of the people who spend a lot of time levelling eight characters to veteran ranks, both in the "Oh, noes, now I have to delete an old one if I want to try a new class" and in the "oh, noes, that new class would have been such a better choice for my character idea" ways. but making it as expansion of existing classes would add more varietee for -everyone-...
    6) ...builds more viable...
Yeah, its kinda vexing that the min/maxxer builds rule and everyone who likes to play a different way gets laughed at and ridiculed. Wish there were diminishing results for attribute points like for c-points...
    7) More Trials.
I never done trials yet, not surprising for a sociophobe like me. Might someday if someone asks me to tag along... but these wouldn't be any draw for me...
    8) Trials/Dungeons gear...
...should scale to max level for new drops. One way or another. And while they may prefer to keep the "new DLC gear" BoP, there really ought to be more BoE drops of max-level old sets to go around (and pep up guild stores)
    9) ...scale gear...
Would be nifty for some sort of "Master Crafter" perk. There are a lot of people who spent a lot of time into getting their favorite sets and upgrading them to legendary... it would be nifty if there was a way to raise those sets to endgame effectiveness again, even if that require just as much work as getting a completely new set together... (which it certainly should). Shortcuts for impatient ones to be sold in the crown store...
    10) Don't make us dependent on set bonuses.
Eh. Set boni are set boni. Not much to be done here in how useful they are for all of us... if anything... then:
    11) Don't let gear drop twice.
Yes, Yes, YES! Trying for a briarheart set in V16 on my main, so far, chest, legs, ring and three helmets!!! :disappointed:
No more solo content please, no one wants that in an MMO...
WRONG! I do! And I expect I am not the only one...
    ...but...
...there ought to be a good balance between solo, solo-able and not-so-solo content.
I wouldn't want a game where every difficult bossfight could be done by people without effort just by bringing along friends. Thus a bit of solo is a good thing.
I wouldn't want a game where you had to have groupies along for -everything-. Thus solo-able DLCs like Orsinium are a good thing.
I also wouldn't want an MMO without any group content at all either, so some groupy content, from small "public dungeon" balanced over standard dungeons to trials, is a good thing as well.
Finding the right balance... well, I like how ESO done so far. IC was more or less public dungeon with PvP (well, ganking) and teo dungeons, Orsinium was soloable region with two public dungeons. The next two will be soloable regions as well I expect, then Murkmire is promising more groupings... looking good from my point of view.

    12. When finishing a dungeon if a heavy armor wearer gets a light armor piece and light armor wearer gets a heavy piece let them be tradeable. Even if its within the group only or just make it boe.

So many times my friends got my piece and I got theirs and it turns into vendor trash.

Sadly, IMO, i think this is the major flaw in this game. its trying too hard to appeal to both audiences and doesnt do a good job of either. ES players think this game isnt immersive enough and mmo players dont feel this game is mmo-y (?) enough. i know when i play this game it feels like im playing a single player game (and i hate single player games, again imo) i dont care about lore and wished this game introduce some more traditional mmo features but then theres the other crowd who feels the complete opposite and love this uh... "unique" system we got going here.

Ive played another mmo that each dlc had a little of everything in it and no one had any problems with it, it had solo content for the loners out there, dungeon-y small group stuff and raid content for those who like large group stuff. i dont feel its hard but then again i dont work there.

unpopular opinion here: i feel alot of the ES title players should realise that this isnt another skyrim, its an mmo and shouldnt want to riot evertime something that god forbids is "lore breaking" (frost mount/halloween constume). i get that this game attracts alot of them and im not denying that they should be cared for aswell but they should realise that this is a business and an mmo needs mmo players to survive

I really dispise this constant begging for name, character race, facial features ect.

The barber shop should NOT allow you to change your facial or body features, merely add say cosmetics like change hair, eyebrows, facial hair and possibly add a tattoo or a circlet / ear rings if you are a female.

I fell behind because I did not just name my character asdfhasf and click on random. It took me a good hour or so to make my first character and I did it with all my alts. I also thought my names long and hard which also put me behind.

If they implement those changes I do hope they are at least 2000 crowns per character.

Changing alliance I can understand although I am happy with all my characters I cannot blame someone for picking the wrong one at launch so that can be a cheap 200-500 crowns or so change.

MMO's need to start putting their foot down and showing that character creation is important and people shouldn't rush @ launch and then regret their characters.

That is my opinion and I respect yours OP even though I do not agree with 3). at all.

You have many other valid points and I salute you for thinking it through in such detail.

Final thought : the trial drop comment will be near impossible because loot in MMO's are usually RNG so good luck with that ( even though it would be wonderful if you could get a different piece each time)

I agree with the majority of the OPs points. Trials and group content can be kept relevant by putting unique tradeable materials in different trial/dungeon content. Crafting should be the future of itemization and the economy.

For number 1, yes PvP arenas are a REALLY GOOD idea but 1v1? No that's called dueling which should definerly be implemented , but they need to add ATLEAST 3v3 arenas (though I think 4v4 would be much better) and they also need to put in battlegrounds of 10v10 or 12v12. Here's a good post I put up about it.

    http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/242183/stirk-being-the-location-for-arenas#latest

And they mentioned a new class in one of their tweets

And also dungeon drops should be better. Crafting is good but in all reality the armor should be a bit more even, whether you earn it by quest, dungeon, trial or crafting it should all be a bit closer than having such a wide skill gap

group finder needs a massive overhaul and a party finder needs to be introduced text chat for consoles would be nice if they could join the servers together for dungeon runs so pc can play with xbox and ps4 would solve alot of problems with there long wait times for dungeons wishfull thinking as sony and micosoft never like that!!

I have an idea on the same lines as this that might help keep things interesting.

So you have that old character or 3 that you rarely use anymore, and wish you had a different race, gender, look, class, name, etc...One simple solution for all of it: Experience Crystals. (account bound)

Purchase said Crystal from the Crown Store. It would be capable of holding the full experience of the highest level at the time. The unused character's experience would simple transfer to the Experience Crystal for storage until a later time. Of course the experience transfer couldn't be completely lossless, because the technology hasn't been perfected yet, so it would transfer with about 80% efficiency, which is not bad for an old (formerly mis-understood) Daedric crystal. The said crystal could also be stored indefinitely, and even used to store experiences from more than one character...However, when the stored experience was transferred into a fresh new willing test subject, err, I mean character, the crystal would be consumed, and any excess experience would graciously be converted to Oblivian energy so that your favorite Daedric god would remain happy with your sacrifices.

This could easily be made into a small quest line to add more depth and immersion, complete with a player sacrificial ritual, and a journey to discover the secret of the ancient Deadric crystals.

    11) Don't let gear drop twice. If i have a pair of boots from a trial/dungeon i won't want the same pair of boots. I need the other set pieces from the trial/dungeon. Please PLEASE find a way to make it to where set pieces can't drop twice until you have the whole set.

So are you saying that the drop rate should remain the same for each piece of gear, just get no drop instead of a duplicate?
Or do want the drop rate to progressively increase for the uncollected pieces of gear? Or a mixture of both?

The problem with this list is that the people who this game attracts could careless about the MMO part which is the problem. Zenimax gave themselves that uphill battle by just making the game in the elder scrolls universe. Was in the comment section of a video crunching stats, numbers and discussing what build is viable with a vampire skill line when somebody joined in talking about the reason why they chose to be a vampire was because of some quest with werewolves. Those are the kind this game attracts. Take that how you will.
