One question hit my mind

I wonder if I'm alone to think about it, but I start to wonder if the RPG player of the traditionnal Elders Scroll are not currently winning ? Let me explain. When this game started there were two opposite point of view inside forum.

One, the MMO fan who were looking for something new to play were wondering about the game and how it will evolve into an MMORPG, while the traditionnal Elder's Scroll fan were currently trying to catch up with the MMO mecanic and were most likely wondering about the lore, and the feeling they would get, wondering if they could actually be playing at the next normal Elder's scroll game.

Those two were radically oppose in their point of view, while some were finding the game hard to adapt to, I was for my own currently finding the mecanic easy to, even simple.

Nowaday the game has evolve, two new dlc pop-up and I'm wondering... do the rpg side win over the mmo side. And that question is quite serious since a LOT of aspect which would be AWFULL in any mmo had been neglected while we get message on twitter that we added over 100 000 thousand line in VO...

So first question ! Am I alone to believe that Zenimax is going too far pushing into the rpg side of their game ? (Btw Star Wars !)

Second question... which will actually be a comment.

Please Zenimax we know it's actually hard to deal with every aspect of a game, and I think every player who love this game is giving you credit and show patience. But you really need to kick out the rpg side of the franchise to focus on how this capacity you give player to interact together could be best serve into TESO. I say so because you use to fix thing. We use to get patch, but nowaday it's like if you were giving the rpg side of thing all the ressource in order to developpe something ... that is actually useless because we all know that isn't what makes a great MMO, no matter how good you are.

It's brutal but it's true, you got a bunch of stuff to work on, upgrade the itemization to vr16 for cyrodill and trial ! Upgrade Craglorn so it stays the only real end-game zone, if you're not currently looking for a new one ! Try to create a meaningfull progression, let us know where we are heading... are we going to stick to discovering the world and the lore you created or are we actually going to enter an adventure ! Try looking at Pop progression (EQ) if you wonder what I mean.

You need to tell the head that he's actually creating too many leg and that he needs to focus on giving a direction !

My 2 cents.

I used to see lots of the RPG'ers in the game. Since the DLC's I see them very, very rarely.
Oh so you play on a console? Well this is a console game after-all I suppose.
  • elias.stormneb18_ESO
Oh, we RPGers are still here, but the loud jerks that used to scream here on the forums are gone (thankfully). A LOT of RPGers are also returning to the game after ESOTU, but most of them are still between level 20 and VR 5.

Also, @medieval_TOG, how do you tell an "RPGer" from a "non-RPGer" apart in-game?

I suppose you could call me an "RPGer". To my knowledge, there are still plenty of RP events, guilds, and players active in NA. I am a member of TESO-RP.com, and we still have events going all the time in all three factions. Personally, I participate in a lot of partner roleplays and pretty much anything Bosmer-related, so we're still around!

The thing with ESO is that the RPG/story aspect is amazing, it's what holds ESO together.
When I do feel immersed in the game I enjoy ESO far more than I ever enjoyed Skyrim. The fighting is fun, the dialogue and voice acting is GREAT and the atmosphere is brilliant (The most visually and coherent game I have EVER played, any category) and it really feels like I'm playing an Elder Scrolls game. To me, this is the most important part of ESO, because you know, it's Elder Scrolls Online.

No, they aren't pushing the RPG too far in hit game, RPG/story is what keeps this game worthwhile. Sure, ZOS has some things to work out in ESO, but they should not sacrifice even a bit of story/RPG for some other aspect of the game.

If anything, they should implement story more in the "end-game". Just rushing through everything just to bash this, spam that and dodge that in a trial or dungeon is just not what I'm after. If I want that, I'll go play WoW.

Combat isn't super, itemization is mediocre and so is a lot of aspects of the game. But the story and atmosphere is astonishing. If people don't take the time to appreciate this, that's their shortcoming - not ESO's.

I'd rather see players kicked out than ZOS kicking out the rpg side :)

I dont understand why rpg should contradict MMO..when mmo games started as a genre they were first rpg and then mmos... Even world of warcraft that is now the king of streamlined mmo games that lost all their rpg aspect.

In everquest and ultima and even in vanilla wow all players were rpg players in a multiplayer world..i dont understand why the mmos did evolve into complete themeparks sacrifising rpg elements for streamline "gamey" games...

I am firmly coming from the RPG side. And while the MMO mechanics are neat to have, its the RPG mechanics that make me choose a game, and stay with it.

ESO has me for the rich TES background, and for the occasional chance to roleplay my characters in that world.
If all it has was MMO, I'd not have bothered buying it.

More RPG will make -me- happy.
More MMO might at some point make -me- sad.

No idea if I am a good representative of the "ESO crowd"... since I generally am more likely to be the "wierd kid" in any crowd from my experiences. But hey, that's me.

I do assume though that at least some of the people who came to ESO got lured here by the lore and world, have experienced it through TES:Morrowind, TES:Oblivion, TES:Skyrim, some perhaps even back from TES:Arena and/or TES:Daggerfall; and treasure the RPG elements as those may just be what sets this one above all the masses of other MMOs to rise and sometimes fall during the times since WoW showed there could be something to those kinds of games...

The biggest crowd playing this game is for the TES RPG side (as seen by this thread), so this would be an awful, awful thing to do.

If you want to play a bland and generic MMO, then there is an entire market of them out there.

I think the conflict for this game is it's trying too hard to be a single player game while labeled as an MMO.

It's RPG elements are pretty solid.

In my opinion, there can't ever be too much Elder Scrolls in an Elder Scrolls Online game.

The RPG part of "MMORPG" means to me more and better ways to express myself as the character(s) I'm playing, be it through itemization (e.g. costumes, gadgets, etc.), emotes, or through a diversity of possible choices in activities, interactions, and quests, which ideally impact the world to the extent that's made possible by the game engine. The "MMO" part of "MMORPG" means to me that I'm being enabled to choose for myself whether or not to do this all by myself, and if I choose to do it together with others, that there will be a positive host of other players to play with.

Narrowing the "MMO" part down to just "PVE item progression" doesn't do it justice, not by a long shot. Of course, the continued acquisition of more powerful gear can serve as a strong motivation, but it shouldn't be the only one, or even the strongest one the game has to offer. WoW went down that path, or rather, started out with it from the very beginning, and after 10 or so years of knowing it, I can confidently say that each and every new expansion is just a repetition of "more of the same" -- regardless of the actual expansion theme -- and a totally predictable, repetitive cycle of "leveling phase, gear level upping phase". An Elder Scrolls based game shouldn't need this, and I fully expect ESO to be more than that.

A way that ZOS could help both RPG'ers and MMO players would be to create a new /Zone for RPG. I used to see them in Zone chat but don't really much any more. There could be a chat channel they are using that I am unaware of. If there was a separate channel they could use strictly for RPG, it would help both them and the normal MMO player.

I really like the direction that the game is going with the DLC content. The day that the PVP world can play with minimal to no lag will truly be a great day in the world of ESO. Then we will have the best of both worlds, great DLC's to enjoy and massive battles as well.

Are the two sides fighting against each other?

What about the many people the like both part/sides? Do people have to be on a side?

Also the game has always been a hybrid game where they were trying to take the best from both places. Some like it some don't.

I take a short time to precise some part of the earlier comment.

I'm not against roleplay in an mmo. Worst thing, I kind of like it, and I feel like not that many player are going for it nowadays but what I truly mean has been stipulated by Walking_Legacy and it is that they are trying too hard to be a single player game while being label an MMO.

And on that point, I do believe that I can only oppose to the part of the community who's believing that ESO should keep the focus on lore and solo adventure trying to build an online skyrim and that for many selfish reason.

First, I want to feel a sens of progression, having a meaning as a community. When I play a solo game, I like to take the time to notice the scenarisation, and the way the world director integrate every aspect of the lore into one interesting content, but when I play an MMO I do expect to go further then that because the goal of the game now isn't just me but the community I play with. I want to have friend who are excited about the same thing I'm. Not defeating Molag once into the sewer (even if that could've been a really nice event if there could actually be better drop and increase difficulty (3 portal at once and one hell of a Molag Bar).

Second, and that's honnest from an almost exclusive MMO player, I don't believe that this game should have such a low population went it comes to raiding and grouping. That's not normal. Is it because of the bad or mitigate early review the game actually had when it first come out, is it that the game did not had enough publicity when it actually changes. I think both would be true but I'm not sure that's actually why. And I don't blame people who liked the RPG, it's my second most played type of game and I do understand that the license is actually driving a bunch of people who are mostly looking foward to play a rpg game but I don't believe that it would actually help increase or even create a community because once the content is complete an RPG fan look for an other story to play. While an MMO fan is usually looking to complete the hardest content and stick to the game because of it.

It's not a duel in between, rpg and mmo, because an MMORPG should actually be looking into both direction, it's mostly a contest in between Massive and Online. While I believe an MMORPG should focus more on the aspect of being a Massive experience mostly an Epic one, I feel like at the moment we are looking foward a more online experience, which for me is a lost since the content could had been made to apply for both.

Thanks for taking time to read :)

Second question... which will actually be a comment.

... But you really need to kick out the rpg side of the franchise to focus on how this capacity you give player to interact together could be best serve into TESO.

-This game isn't setup to "win" but it is setup to have content to experience.
-You're not alone I'm sure but many understand the intent of the devs so I would disagree that ZOS is pushing or going too far. Its suppose to be very different from any other RPG and MMO experiences you've ever had.
-No they do not need to kick out the RPG side and they do not need to focus on any capacity of player interactions....while those ideas may benefit what you hope to see, it doesn't align with what they hope to provide the gamer as experiences.

I'm going to just share this as your post is similar in your mindset to another two or three

    http://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/news/post/2012/10/24/dive-into-the-eso-preview-event-coverage

If they were to focus on resolving things that aren't working as intended, its resolves a lot of things as well as once that occurs, the desire is then to focus on completing long drawn out development witch resolves a lot of other concerns.

I'll rephrase the question as to how I read it.

Is this game leaning to much toward the RPG of the Franchise and to far away from what folks have come to understand as an MMO?

    I'll keep it short

For the Elder Scroll's fan - No

For folks wanting WoW, DAoC (or the multitude of other comparisons I've seen) with better graphics - Yes

I love PvP when I get the time for it and feel like doing it. I don't care for Group dungeons and trials. That said, I'm here for The Elder Scrolls Universe and since everyone is not an NPC, for me, it is the best one yet. "MMORPG"

Edit: It wasn't clear what I was answering, so I added a bit at the beginning.

I've been looking at the website, and the different interview and one thing strike me when Matt Firor said that they weren't looking to do a MMO as the other but a Modern Rpg... and I do agree that's what they are accomplishing either I like it or not.

But still, an instance Molag in the sewer that required 24 people minimum and that could drop any piece of the dongeon set and some unique would have been nice ! (36 hour cooldown).

On the contrary, I think it leans a bit more toward the MMO side. Not by much, and certainly not in the traditional sense (like raids and forced grouping to progress) but I do feel that many MMO qualities are already counted for and that RPG elements only go so far.
This of course is only my opinion, but I think they should focus a bit more on RPG elements in the future as they add more content.

Not to mention if you do what I did in the dungeon and just follow some folks and join in the fight without joining in on the group you don't get squat. No chest at all for me even though I started fighting with them in the tunnels and I was there for the whole fight. I haven't even attempted a trip back.
