Overload Questions

Xbox Player here with a few questions about Overload since I have no idea the actual damage values.

1) Do the DW and 2H passives work for Overload? I've heard both yes and no and want to confirm.

2) A few guildies of mine tested Overload DPS in Cyrodiil on another Guildie. They said that 50/50 Elemental Expert/Thaumaturge actually generated higher hits then 100 Elemental Expert. This seems way off to me but was wondering if anyone with combat text had noticed this.

3) I see a lot of people talk about DW'ing Torug's Pact swords on the Buff/Overload bar. Would a Precise vMA Greatsword be more DPS then Nirnhoned DW Torug's Pact Swords? My rough calculations say yes but I'd love input from a PC with numbers.

Cant give you exact Numbers now but

    1. Yea they do and dual wield swords provide the top dps cause of 5% dmg increase and extra possibility for set items.

    2. Thaumaturge only boost magic damage. Overload is elemental dmg
thaumaturge boosts crystal frag and mines for example
Elemental Expert boosts overload and other elemental skills.

    3. A greatsword has more weapon dmg due to weapon damage passive the base damage isn't higher than. This doesn't apply to spell damage so no it's not higher dps.

    1) No, but the inherent Spell Damage increase from DW still applies

    2) Overload damage is 100% Elemental, Thaumaturge does not increase its damage. Go 100 Ele Expert, 1 Spell Erosion and the rest into Elfborn.

    3) No, the Spell Penetration from Nirnhoned outperforms the additional Spell Damage from Maelstrom Weapons, unless you target has very low Spell Resist. Since your to focus should be on killing bosses / pvpers and not Mammoths, stick with Nirnhoned on all weapons for Magicka builds.

    @Thelon, Thanks for the answers!

    1) OK, that makes sense.

    2) Yeah, I thought that as well. Not sure why they reported different numbers. Bug on Xbox with CP?

    3) Unless I'm misreading it, it seems that @Asayre shows that the vMA Sharpened Staves are better then non-setted Nirnhoned ones.

Another question that is a little off topic but also bugging me:

    4) Do each of the Force Pulse/Crushing Shock elements crit individually or is it an all-or-nothing affair?

    From post #296:

"For bosses, the additional 18% penetration is equivalent to 637 Spell Damage"

This is far more than the bonus afforded by Maelstrom Staffs, but of course I'll leave it to @Asayre to correct me if I'm wrong.

    4) Each individual element in a force Pulse attack has the chance to Crit; it is not an all or nothing affair.

Regarding the Stave calculations, I read the 637 Spell Damage equivalence as well. However, Sharpened is 14% penetration so the question is is 189 Spell Damage better or worse then 4% penetration. Using simple math, 4% penetration would be worth 142 Spell Damage or less then the Maelstrom Enchant (4%/18%*637).

@Asayre does a more thorough calculation and determines it's actually a difference of 133 Spell Damage making those Sharpened Staves better.

What this man said is correct.

If the question is Maelstrom versus a Set bonus staff that gives you 129 Spell Damage (possible with many combos) the difference is 60 base spell damage compared to 4% Spell Penetration AND a weapon enchant (In PvP this would be Disease). In this scenario Nirnhoned staves are always far better as your crushing shock benefits far more from the weapon enchant.

Maelstrom staves only make sense if you're running two 5 piece sets or a 5 pc set, 2 pc monster set and willpower.

@Ezareth Makes sense and yes, this would be for a 5x, Kena, Willpower build.

why not screw the the vma weapon and instead run 5pc set, willpower, 1pc kena, and 2pc Torug pact so you can use a crafted staff with Nirnhoned.....?

I am pretty sure they are adjusting the 2pc bonus on Kena making it meh anyway

@Makkir that's the point I've been trying to make. That combo among others marginalize the Maelstrom staves. The only time they make sense is using the broken kena 2 PC bonus.

@Ezareth @Makkir I totally agree that if without the Kena 2PC, that's the way to go. However, you kinda defeated your own point by both claiming the set is so OP that until it's nerfed it's 'broken'.

It is only really OP in a burn scenario, it is an average DPS loss. Its as if it were made for VMSA. If you aren't in overload then its a set bonus with zero value really.

I would better call it situationally OP. In PvE yeah because bosses aren't typically roll dodging out of the way of projectiles. In PvP it might match up great against templars but I gave up on Overload because it seemed to me everyone knows how to avoid it anyway. I prefer Dawnbreaker. Ez likes to run Overload in Cyrodiil, I don't (although I admit I haven't set foot in Cyrodiil for about 1.5 months now as I am farming vet dungeons for monster sets now).

This is why if you are looking strictly at PvP, I wouldn't personally bother running 2pc Kena.

I am actually trying to work on a winterborn/2pc Nerien'eth build.

Well, I should clarify, I never actively PvP. I do the Cyro dailies if I'm bored but I avoid actual PvP combat; I a strictly PvE player.

Likewise, most groups I'm in for vet dungeons just burn bosses and ignore all mechanics. So, you guys specifically described all the cases I'd actually play endgame content (vMA and dungeon/trial boss burns).

That being said, I do know I'm not every player and in PvP, there are better options.
