I don't understand why I , as a crafter, hafta put up with running the same old boring pledges just to have to pick up some laurels so I can help other players who might want mercenary gear...seems like a simple attempt to foster interest in a dead end...

they wanna encourage you to use your crafters as more than just some skill dump so you aren't master of combat on one and master of cradts on another

Not to be a jerk but... it might be because you don't know any better.

The game isn't terrible, but there are a lot of choices made which every veteran MMO player is left scratching their head wondering what's going on at ZOS. Taking a game which was all about freedom of choice and play the way you want then adding everything is BoP to make people play new content is one of the biggest ones.

I am familiar with BoP and I do dislike this as well...but it is an MMO...it isn't a game that should allow for everything to be so readily obtainable, no matter how much I prefer it...I don't like how much grinding this game forces (which contradicts my above statement as well). It is true, I am not a 'gamer' and I haven't delved into other MMO's and that I do dislike BoP for how many items have it these days.

All to say that, with this game, I am well aware of what I am speaking of. I read these forums often (reason I joined), watch the videos and keep up with the future content and info they make. This is going too off-topic for this thread though.

You can send laurels to people via deconnable gear. Craft a Mercenary iron dagger, send it to them, have them decon it. It's not a perfect transfer, but it's a way around the bind.

I've deconned lots of Merc gear (stuff I crafted for testing purposes) and have also sent people laurels since I have so many from farming vWGT. Between all these decons, we've collectively recovered 18 laurels out of 25 gear pieces.

Of course, as with all things RNG, YMMV.

Mercenary motifs come as a reward for running undaunted dungeon pledges so gaining the laurel from a dungeon run makes sense. The same as the pvp earned motifs and materials require pvp play to obtain. Really laurel is not hard by any means to gain especially if you had the wherewithal to save excess keys instead of burning them in between updates to gain the chapters to buff the drop rates. Once you get the ball rolling you will have too much laurel. I am sitting pretty with a stockpile having four alts with all chapters and I do not even run pledges often as of late.

    So....

Has anyone gotten a laurel out of a non-vet dungeon?
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

They want you to repeat the same content over and over again and hope you get a laurel or two for your efforts. ZOS is all about repeatable content.

I will have to keep notes, but I'm not sure my crafter (who knows the full motif) get a laurel every time she runs a vet dungeon.

I think one of the things that need to be considered is this: ZOS said they made laurels bound because they wanted to offer them int he crown store eventually. That essentially encourages the trade of real money for in-game gold, as a crafter who does not run dungeons would buy the laurels from the crown store and then take gold for crafting the gear.

They may want to rethink that.

As for the PvP gear comparison, the Ancient Scales (which can be bought with AP) are not bound. Only the Golden Scale is (like the Malachite)

They should sell them at vendors, like other style materials. Dungeons only is definitely silly. I mean I have enough, but the method to get them is meh. It wasn't thought out so well imo.

Well, technically you can buy crafted mercenary items and deconstruct them... Not the best way, but I saw some people buying them in /z.

It's a bit silly that deconstructing mercenary or glass armor wont give you a malachite or laurel for 100 %. I mean, I had one malachite and used it to craft a helmet for my char, but just to experiment with it and test it. Then I deconstruct it and I noticed I didn't receive the malachite, I was really bummed by it. But I noticed as well that deconstructing xivkyn gear gives you your charcoal of remorse back for 100 %. I tested it with 5 pieces of armor. So hopefully they change that for glass armor, merc, or any other armor in the future.

I'm just not the type that thinks that everything should be available to everyone no matter what they want to do. To me it is always an issue of where to draw the line of "play how you want" People want laurels, but don't want to do dungeons. People want PvP skills but don't want to PvP. People want Undaunted passives, but don't want to do dungeons. People want Maelstrom weapons, but don't want to do VMA. How many alternative ways of giving things to people do we do before we just give everything away all the time. Is nothing worth working for anymore?

And I actually agree with you in most instances. But having a trait stone be bound when the motif pages are not is a bit silly. In many cases, someone who is a "professional" crafter is crafting this stuff for other people, and if they want merc armor, they should be able to farm the laurels and hand them to the crafter.

True. I don't know how many professional crafters there are though. I craft all my own stuff. I'd honestly be fine with it being sellable, and I don't really like using a slippery slope argument. I'm just kind of tired of people complaining that everything they want to do should award them with everything they want. The recent threads for PvP skills to be attainable in other ways have maybe rubbed me the wrong way.

True, dungeons are not for everyone. But for those who are intimidated by dungeons, the Laurels and motifs are a good incentive to stretch their game experience and try new things. As in real life, new experience leads personal growth. I mostly avoided dungeons, even as a v16. I wanted to do them for Undaunted skill passives, but Laurels gave me extra incentive. Now I do pledges almost daily, and have a good stash of Laurels. As a result of this dungeon experience, I'm now getting into PVP. I have a long way to go for Caltrops and Vigor, but I'm enjoying the PVP, even though I die OFTEN. :D

Bottom-line: embrace the new. I'm glad they did Laurels the way they did.
