Competitive arenas, grand prize tournaments, ranked ladders etc you could even use the maelstrom stages. 2s 3s and 5s.

I don't know about strictly following it, but taking some queues wouldn't kill anyone that's for darn sure.

wont happen, they know what fun is people....... They gave us a horrible RNG system to make the game last forever, BoP to make finding those items "worth it and rewarding." To add actual fun stuff would be insane!!!!!!

I think the problem with making mmo's out of well known franchises they are locked to lore and previous games, what you talk about op might be fun but it also may bring out the worst in Elder Scrolls fans, I think there would be a large amount of the fan base that would see that as not very Elder Scrollish, for me I could care less, one way or the other it is what it is, you never know they might just add some things to spice it up, but I doubt it.

I don't see ZOS as a big fan of "MMO metas". I quite hope I am right and they stay that way. The problem with the "MMO meta" is that they are "successful" only because everyone pretends that the "in" thing to do is to follow them.

My feeling is that if I wanted to go back to playing arenas and battlegrounds, I would go find an MMO that did structured PVP like that and play it. There are plenty to choose from, and I have characters in a number of them.

Like I said above, I don't think following the meta is a good idea, but getting some ideas wouldn't hurt.

The meta so referring to what other successful games already offer

In my opionion.... When you decide to make a game that is part of a franchise, Elder Scrolls, it would be very smart to stick closer to the meta. In fact, I'm surprised they are not forced to. Risky ideas are best left to independents.

The game's central concept of "PvP in PvP areas and be safe in safe areas" needs to stay the way it is.

Not sure where your going with that. To much generalization.

In business, being different just for the sake of being different rarely turns out well. Put your own twist on things, sure. But just refusing to do things that would increase your number of customers, as well as making the vast majority of them happier (the lore fanatics are a minority and not a majority in this game) just because you're trying to be "different" tends to be product suicide.

Yep. Exactly. And when you are playing with someone's franchise I would think they would want to have a say in how risky your decisions are.

Sadly there are actually some game developers that do live by their game's meta. Just look at Pokemon for example...

I can't necessarily vouch Zenimax lives by their game's meta but some of them might.
