I don't think there's enough things in the game that are there just for fun. The trophies you get from public dungeons are a cool start (The Questionable Meat Sack and the Welkynd Stone are my favorites), but everything else in the game has an air of seriousness around it. When there's nothing fun to do, everything in the game becomes a chore.
Here are a few things I believe would make this game more enjoyable:
- Join in the eating contest in windhelm.
- Participate in both mounted and foot races in each zone.
- Fishing competitions
- Joke weapons
- Dueling between players
Windhelm's Eating Contest
Watching those guys eating like mad, complaining about stomach aches, choking on food, it really makes me hungry. I just want to get in there and join them. Better yet, I want my friend to join me. I want to compete with my friend to see who can eat the most.
There could be two different kinds of challenge:
- There's a set amount of food you have to eat, whoever eats it faster wins.
- There's a set time that you have, eat as much as you can.
There could be a betting system in place. We put the items we're betting into a chest, and whoever wins gets the items. It'd be just for fun and entirely optional.
Mounted and Foot Races
There are lots of quests where you have to run a pre-defined race. It's just disappointing that you can't repeat them. They were fun.
- At least one mounted race and one foot race in each zone.
- A similar betting system to the one described above could be implemented.
Fishing Competitions
Fishing's already in the game, right? Well, why not have fishing competitions? One in each zone. It'd be an excuse to expand on the fishing mechanic:
- More rare fish
- Higher tiers of rare fish (epic and legendary fish)
- The ability to filet rare fish (maybe rarer fish have a higher chance of carrying Perfect Roe?)
They'd work in a similar manner to the bug catching contests in Pokémon Gold and Silver. Each player would have 20 minutes to catch the rarest fish they could. The winner would be determined by:
- Highest rarity of fish they caught.
- If players tie, it goes to the one with the most fish of that rarity.
- If players tie again, it goes to the one with the most fish of the previous rarity.
- So on.
- If players tie on all counts, the reward is divided evenly between them.
The reward would be gold, XP, and bait (the bait would depend on the area the fishing competition took place in).
Joke Weapons
Here are some ideas:
- A bow that fires heart-shaped arrows with a pink trail behind them.
- A club that's basically the sponge on a stick they used instead of toilet paper back then. It'd give a tiny bit of poison damage and make them cower in fear (possibly vomit like with the mystery meat).
- Antique pistol that always backfires and takes 30 seconds to reload.
- Something that launches snowballs that snare the target...but do nothing else.
- The dagger of friendship (remember that from the shivering isles?)
Duelling between players
Players both consent to a personal duel between the two of them. This can only be done whilst neither of them are in combat. It will be requested the same way as one would request a trade (walk up to them and interact).
While duelling, players can still be attacked by mobs. If this happens, the duel will end prematurely until the mobs have been dispersed.
The duel can be either to the death, or to the knee. The player that dies during the duel will be revived on the spot upon the conclusion of the duel at no cost to them (no soul gems spent on revival, dying in the duel does not cause their gear to degrade).
Betting system similar to the race and eating contest could be implemented here. Winner takes all. If a duel is interrupted for whatever reason, the items in the duel will go back to the players they came from.
Feedback
I'd really appreciate feedback on this post. Especially if someone from ZOS has anything to say regarding the possibility of this stuff actually happening.
