Yes, your character is useless if you play anything other than an Imperial or Altmer, and you may as well delete it right away (at least according to those who QQ about this game needing free race change, preferrably yesterday).

If you are trying to play competitive content in groups with people who think it matters a lot, it may effect you.

If you mostly play solo or with casuals and aren't trying to be on leaderboards it probably won't effect you very much.

If you think the game is a faceroll now, doing this might give you a small element of challenge so it may be worth trying.

My wood elf Templar is a hybrid of stamina and magicka, so I don't think I'm the optimal race for that build and I'm doing fine.

Im going stam nightblade, so i went imperial so that i could pump full points into stam hit like a truck and due to, the passive % health and stam from the imperial passives with the chance of hit lifesteal, it makes for a very beefy hard hitting NB

Plus they are romans for god sake XD

So yes it does matter but if you are just playing the game and dont mind getting rammed by someone who picked a good race for what they are going then you will have no problem.

If champion points are sooo powerful that everyone complains if you have 200 more, those 200 more cp gives a couple of % more regen and dmg.

So if this matters so much that people complaines 24/7, then why should not a race passive with 10% more magicka and regen and 4% elemental dmg matter? (just to take an example)

Ditto. I've only spent one skill point on racials across 5 chars, and that's on my main (a khajiit sorc stam/mag hybrid) to get a little bit extra health regen. Didn't really make me feel like I die any less, either. :) But its a fun build, and that's what counts.

To me, race matters to how I envision and play my character.

He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

They matter as much as you feel they do.

Anything in the game can technically be completed on any race/character combo...

But optimizing your race for your class/build will be very very helpful to get the best out of your character if you PvP / chase leaderboards etc....

BUT, for the less hardcore player it also make life SO much easier! Easier to stay alive, more resources, better regen. It just makes your character a chunk easier to play.

My point being, do what makes you happy, but don't let people say that it's only for the min/maxers.... a good race/class/build combo will help anybody regardless of what kind of player they are.

Everybody probably sometimes wanted to switch to magicka/stamina, but realized his toon has not good racial passives for that. What then? Personally I think a good idea is to study all possible skills into detail and you might find something useful that you can use often that will benefit from your racial passives. There are abilities out there that have effects that do not scale from amount of magicka/stamina and using them can make you feel a little bit better about swiching to stat that isnt best choice for your race.

Does free buffs towards your build matter or no?

For some it doesn't. For others, it's a big deal.

I think most racial passives brings nice buffs for most builds and classes. But there's some exceptions, like pulling of a pure stamina PvE dps build when you're Breton or Altmer. You're not getting anything out of your racial passives at all, which might feel a bit frustrating.

In PvP however, you rarely run "pure builds". Stamina builds need magicka + recovery for utility like Cloak or Reflective Scales. Magicka builds need stamina + recovery for block, cc break and dodge. Everyone needs extra health. Also so many different variables, available counters, terrain and situations that comes in to play in PvP, that race drops very low on the list.

It's mainly for more competitive endgame PvE, that race can be a big deal, since you wont be able to squeeze in that extra dps with the wrong racials.

You will get 2 answers, one from the people who played the game, and other from the people who grinded the game.

The ones who played will say the one I agree with most, that it matters, but not nearly as much as your current equipment, skill set and champion points. Not to mention ur fingers. Anything is viable, anything works just fine. You will not be a failure because 10% plus or minus anything. If your build depends on 10% max magicka or 20% regen, you suck.

The other kind, numberphiliac people, will tell you that yes, they matter a lot and can't be ignored because the max perfomance is way better than a not maxed out in every way performance. And they are technically correct, as far as competitive playstyles go. But keep in mind, these people are the guys that pay'd 60k a piece per martial knowledge items in the first week when they became v14, when it was 70k for the full set 1 month later, same with the 300k willpower and agility rings today, wich will be no more than 150k a piece in no more than couple weeks, and so many other 'new hype stuff'. So you'd be wise to not trust *everything* they tell you to be 'smart'

I don't disagree with your assessment but saying it matters but not nearly as much as current equipment, skill set, and champion points is an outright lie. Having the wrong racials is basically the same as limiting yourself to 5 armor slots instead of 7.

Bolded a part of your post I found funny. It's interesting how you try to dodge reality by your choice of words, namely with the use of 'technically'. But it works this way in practice.

The facts don't lie. Put two players of equal skill next to eachother, with one being a magicka class playing a khajit, and the other being a magicka class playing an altmer/breton/dunmer depending on said class. The second player will always outperform the first. No exceptions.

Your post gave off a feel as if you're holding a grudge towards said players for some reason, but trying to write off the facts by pushing stereotypes isn't really going to help anyone.

The OP asked a simple question, with a simple answer: Yes, your race matters a lot.

No ifs, no buts, it's just the way the game is designed. Yes, you can still perform good enough with any race, but you will never be the best at anything.

Only when it comes to min-maxing and showing off to your buddies that you got a little higher damage/healing output then they did.

Otherwise no ones going to tell you you cant run a Trial with them because you dont have a particular race as a character for a particular class and build.

I don't care much about passives myself. I play an argonian templar healer who has no passives benefiting a magica build really (at least compared to Breton or Altmer who are the min/max ideal for my build). But to be honest, I like the challenge of not having all these racial passives that benefit my build. I have a breton templar healer of the same build and to be honest, I don't really notice much of a difference at all in my resource management or amount of damage/healing I put out. Because you can build up and customize your character with so many different options out there from armor sets to enchants to potions and food you consume at the right times.

Lastly, I have a much better time playing my argonian cause he has a cool backstory and his character is so much more interesting to me. While I am not much in the way of an RP'er, I like to put some thought behind my characters in how they look, their names, why they do what they do and what not. It just helps me to be more immersed in this game that has such amazing lore and stories that my character is a part of.

So if you want to immerse yourself and your character into this immense world that is an Elder Scrolls game, then no, racial passives do not matter. Or if none of that stuff matters to you and you are more interested in end game content and having a super strong competitive build, then sure racial passives will help with that.

That right there is precisely where the "if" comes in: If you care about being the best at something, then race matters a lot. But if you just want to be good enough to do whatever it is that you want to do, then it doesn't matter that much and there are a lot of factors you can use to decide what race you want to be.

Which is pretty much what half of the people in this thread are saying. The other half, I assume, are the ones who care about being the best. Different strokes for different folks.
