Public Dungeon and delve etiquette when soloing

When soloing these things, do you run past others whilst they're tackling a group of enemies, knowing you won't attract the groups aggro or do you help out?

I have always helped out, but something I've noticed is a lot of people will run past. That doesn't really bother me because I wouldn't have entered the dungeon in the first place if I wasn't expecting to solo it in the first place. However, what really grinds my gears are the people who wait just shy of aggro'n the next group (you see them turning around to see where you are, so you know they're watching you) wait for you to draw the aggro and then run past leaving you to deal with them alone, again.

Then today, I was attempting to sneak past a polar bear inside one of these delves, to reach a locked chest, and this guy was following me and just as i got midway through the unlocking, the bear spotted me and i had to disengage from the chest. The other guy knowing I couldn't do anything until I killed the bear, ninja'd the chest. I'd be embarrassed doing that. I've always just assumed it's nice to help out if it's obvious there's no grinding going on. If I'm running next to someone else, but not grouped with them, I tend to leave chests to whoever spotted them first. Or just take it in turns opening them as we come across them.

Am I doing this all wrong? Am I expected to use selfishness to my advantage? Just asking because maybe I'm genuinely the one in the wrong here with this being my first MMO. Maybe being a noob I'm being naive here.

This is the reason why I wish I could kill my allies much more often than ppl of the opposing factions.

Since release of IC my ignore list has filled up with quite a few notorious chest stealers.

Nah, I hear you. I am a very solo-oriented player and I have a sort of "code of honor."

I always help unless there is a quest around that requires NOT killing a specific mob (it's frustrating trying to charm a mob when someone keeps killing it lol.)

Delves are ez mode so I don't really give any thought to them except to make sure I don't kill the boss when a group or player is close but currently involved. I like to give them a chance to not have to wait for a re-spawn.

Pub Dungeons are my jam. So fun to solo. Here I pay very close attention to strangers and always ALWAYS help. It's fun and a great way to develop some emergent gameplay situations. I usually end up teaming up with strangers since it's almost always beneficial.

I'll generally stick around and provide healing and/or buffs as needed, and then move on once they have finished. I NEVER steal a chest or node that someone else is already heading towards. That's just uncalled for. It would be awesome if you could interact with someone's profile and leave some sort of feedback that impacts their reputation in game. Something along the lines of Fable where your actions have consequences... I have a feeling that a lot of players would have horns.

The worst part is, I still tend to help them out if they're struggling on a boss. For example, I was in the Lion's Den today and I had already killed this particular boss, and a player who was using these *** tactics on me was obviously struggling to kill this boss, but i still helped him. It would have been easy just to run past him like he did with me. But me being a grade A sucker, I helped him out before going our separate ways again.

I agree it's so frustrating to have someone snatch a chest/node. I'll often follow them until i can repay the favor and move on.

You're too kind! It would have been quite easy to watch his demise, kill the boss, and then have a little free-balling squat session on that player's corpse.

Yeah, I fully appreciate that some areas have quests that have enemies that are hostile to some players, but aren't necessarily hostile to someone else. Especially after completing some quests.

That's how I handle it, too.

"Funny" thing today: I was about to pick a flower (not in a dungeon though, but in the wilds), then some guy rushed towards it to get it first, which he did, and then he ran away. Then I realized that he was even on my friendslist, but he did not recognize me during his greedy farming.. I didn't think he's "that guy".. It's not the first time that someone from my friendslist jumps infront of me to get the node first (the other was even grouped with me back then). Well, both are not on my list anymore now.
Also today, I fought a bunch of Welwas in LC to get one Void Ore right next to them (and a bit XP and Shadowhide Scraps^^) while another player came in stealth and took the ore. Although it was obvious I was fighting for it. Sometimes I really wish for a temporary PvP option in PvE zones, really, he would have deserved my Uppercut in his stealthy butt^^
When I can't stand one thing, it's selfishness, or greed.

But, same thing for chests or nodes in dungeons or other places; when I see someone approaching it already, I leave it to them, of course. Also when I'm many levels (or even ranks) higher, I don't think about taking it in the first place, because I can get "my own" stuff everywhere else, but they can not.

Btw, I like the reputation idea ;)

People have done that to me in the past. I always think - meh, he must really have been desperate for the money.
There are a lot of nice, fun people in this game but also some rude ****holes. That's life.

I also am in the habit of piling in when I see a battle.
I'm always happy when others help me and have done quite a few delves where me and another random player stagger the slotting of mob groups and then take out the bosses together before parting ways.

I'm also aware that other players may not welcome the help and I notice those players will hang back or take another path, if they want to go it alone.
You don't need to wait long for mobs to re-spawn. I've had bosses re-spawn behind me while I'm still looting and ended up having to take them down again!

It's also possible that those players hanging back and waiting for you to draw aggro just aren't very good!

If you see me, please pile in and welcome!

Was playing the other night with a group - small group - there were three of us. We rotate chests in IC. A fourth temporarily joined us and we found a chest. It was pretty neat that all four of us stood back and were willing to let each other get it.

    Really nice to see.

Why is it even possible for player to snatch a node or chest from other player in PvE mode for ESO? In GW2 every player have the same access to nodes (loot/chests) as everybody else and do not compete with each other on who is getting that chest/node first.

    This times 100.

I honestly dont know what's going on in someone's head, when he or she starts spamming ultimate and execute on a boss with a spawn timer, when they know another player is a few seconds behind. It's so incredibly inconsiderate, especially if it's a slower or rare spawn for challenge+ achievement.

I always make sure other players gets a chance to tag bosses(even mobs) for XP, loot and completion. That's my idea of delve and Public Dungeon etiquette. Same with Dolmens and World Bosses. I mean, you're just lucky getting there a few seconds earlier when the boss is up, don't be a d-bag about it and force everyone else to "wait their turn" for god knows how long.

Primarily to ensure that the "economy" doesn't get overwhelmed, which is funny, because I'm under the impression that a lot of people farm materials by deconstructing stolen loot, rather than gather the resources in the wild.

Totally. I always announce a World Boss or Dolmens in zone chat before tackling them. It is quite common that another player needs that boss but can't quite solo them, and I like to help them out. Also someone might already be on their way! I feel bad for console players for this reason. Zone chat can be so helpful. I love porting to strangers to help them out on elite world bosses and stuff.

I never really know what to do, I mean, I want to be helpful but maybe someone wants the satisfaction of doing it all on their own, who knows. So I help. I know I appreciate it when others are helping me. This is a thing, too. I feel the same sometimes, and I think it's a carry-over from games like DAoC. Like you, I err on the side of helping because it's a social game. As an aside, I think ESO is a really fun game as a soloer specifically.

@HollyQ502 No, I completely understand that and that isn't what I'm getting at. It's hard to tell at times. However, when you know someone is just standing outside the aggro window, looking at you, then run right past you once you've pulled aggro, they're doing it just because they want to speed run to the boss and shard. Of course this is also in the absence of a quest, which requires you not to draw aggro. But we can all more or less tell when that's happening because A) we're doing the quest too if we're in that particular delve/dungeon or B have done the quest before. It also doesn't excuse chest ninjas.

The upside is that every time you are fair and thoughtful around others, you are potentially making someone else value that kind of interaction and alter their future play style accordingly. Not every player who does rude stuff is a monster... Oftentimes they are just used to everyone else being selfish so they adopt the same behavior.

I never take a chest if I'm in a zone like IC and I'm following a group to stay alive. But in PvE If someone cuts me off I know the zone, I don't just follow a path, so If I get ninja'd on a node I take a different route and take the next 10 in front of them and they never even see me again, and I think to myself who's ninja'd now :)
If I see someone else working a path I tend to just go a different direction knowing the nodes will respawn by the time I get there.

As far as fighting goes If their health is low and the mobs are high I help out, if not then I tend to leave them alone and let them take the XP for themselves since they started it. ( they do still split XP for mobs don't they?) Also, in Craglorn I never take a node next to someone fighting, but I am wary enough to drag a fight, I start, over a node if that is what I'm after. It's funny to watch a node ninja get knocked on their butts from time to time. All though I don't see this much anymore, most folks that run the same time I do tend to follow the same type of etiquette .
