Idea for new PvP area

I am a PvE'er. I do some PvP but am one off the noobs that does it from the safety of a zerg. Unlike so many of my PvE peers I have a lot of respect for PvP'ers and watching one player successfully fight a group of other PvP players is really interesting. It clearly takes research and practice to make and play these builds and I am cannon fodder against such talent.

A guild mate of mine mentioned what I think is a great idea. Create an arena for PvP 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 (etc.) combat. Perhaps players could gain rankings from these contests. Such an arrangement would then allow those of us that suck at PvP to practice by playing against equal ranked opponents and build some skill. Who knows - maybe with TS or Vent we could even have coaching. An interesting aspect would be if we could have a spectator section to watch and learn from the contests... i would definitely watch.

Sort of an ESO Gladiator Arena; a real Thizzrini Arena (as it were.)

I am no Game developer and don't know how tough such coding would be, but this seems and idea with potential.

Thoughts?

    nothing wrong with that idea

the arena was a staple of the IC back in Oblivion (in the future)

ZOS knows we want this. That's as far as the idea has ever gotten.

Gladiatorial Arenas (like in Oblivion as @Jitterbug mentioned) would be great. The problem is, ZOS doesn't seem inclined to make any aspect of ESO that might take away from what they want us to focus on. Right now, they want us to play Imperial City. They won't make another part of the game that would draw focus away from IC. Maybe a few years in the future they might include something in the form of a small scale arena.

Personally I would like it were treated more like a sport. Every player is given an Arena rank, which is independent of player level, and is dependent on Arena performance. When you sign up for a match you are put in the preparation screen which a player is allowed 60 seconds to prepare. Each player is stripped naked and given a selection of shared arena gear that is appropriate for your level. Both players must perform the following tasks:
    • Choose and equip all gear (from a shared equipment bank)
    • Equip BOTH ability bars (which start out empty)
    • Place monetary bet on oneself
during these 60 seconds, players are able to see their opponents equipment and ability bars. Players can make strategic decisions about what skills to equip. Spectators can watch this match preparation and are given the 60 seconds to place their own bets. The award won by the winning player is dependent on the total number bets placed.

These are just some initial thoughts on the system. I'm sure ZOS could incorporate some other PVP aspects or require Telvar stones as entrance fees or something so that the system isn't completely removed from the PVP they have already established.

I would think that perhaps players can spectate in Arena matches from the beginning of the game but should be level 25 or so before they are allowed to actually participate in matches. Maybe between level 25 and 50 players can only "practice" in the arena against AI controlled opponents and at level 50 players can finally fight against other players.

There really are a lot of different ways to go about this.

What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.
    That's right... Horse.
