How do Criticals work in pvp?

Since starting on console I've searched for info about this topic many times but i never seem to find whole story from the last year of PC play.

I've noticed in multiple build guides that pvpers will dismiss Crit buffs entirely, but I've laso seen a few random builds that use them as well.

SO, what's the story? Is there a Crit cap in pvp or something? If i was on PC and had add ons i could just test it myself, but being on console I'm flying blind.
I really appreciate any explanation. thanks.

Critical hits work in pvp the same as pve.

However it was not always this way. The Impenetrable trait on gear used to basically completely negate any extra bonus damage from critical hits, it was by far the most impactful trait for pvp so used it. No matter how much critical chance or bonus critical damage you had, impenetrable would negate it so no one bothered with crit for pvp back then.

Theres no crit cap, well 100%, besides that a couple of things tou need to know:

    - In general, damage & heal can crit, dots/hots included.

    - Crit is a base +50% dmg/heal increase, that value, named crit damage, can be increased in various ways like sets, champion points or mundus stones.

    - To maximize output crit chance & crit dmg have to be even, that is for example having 60% crit chance then try increase crit dmg a 10% to reach 60% too.

Keep in mind that, as of now, you can not crit Shields, lame mechanic if you ask me.

Also good to know is that the Champion ability for crit actually works multiplicative, not additive. So if you have 10% extra from Champion points, it's 10% of your exiting 50%, so 55% and not 50+10 => 60%

Big CP investment for small returns and better spend on something else.

But Wrobel worked hard on making the shield breaker set instead of focusing on that mechanic for shield instead.

    Very important point!

The CP skill is not as good, as it would be, if the % would be added to the whole 150% total damage (it adds only to the 50%)

Better then the CP skill are:
    - Shadow Mundus stone
    - Class skills/passives (NB passive, "revamped" Trap skill, etc.), although I'm not sure abou that skills
    - ...

    Thanks everyone.
I'm curious now if players (eg-Sypher ) that post builds w/out buffs like inner light might be using crit buff potions instead.

I don't use crit buff potions.

I just don't value crit in pvp compared to pve.

    Werd, thx 4 the reponse.
I appreciate the help since Its impossible to gauge their value on console with no numbers to examine.

I was also thinkin some folks might go back to using some Impen since nirn nerf as well.
