I don't seem to understand PvP. Please help me understand and succeed!

I have not dabbled much in PvP - I have to disclose this first and foremost. Been in Cryrodill maybe 3 or 4 times now.

I have completed the starter missions there that go over the basics of the siege combat ect. I'm now at the part where you have the 4 bulletin boards that give you 4 different types of quests. And this is the part where I get a little confused.

I go to these boards and get a mission where the destination is very very far away. I have no problem with that, I love taking in the sights and getting some missions along the way. But... along the way.. anytime I get near to any sort of objective. I get noticed by a person or npc - and then it is instant death.

I am level 29. is this just too soon to expect to have any decent amount of fun in this land ?

Please keep in mind I'm not complaining I genuinely want to know. I don't know if I'm just missing something?

Do I need to take a mission to do the pvp or can I just stumble across battles and join in ?

Any entry level tips would be appreciated.

You only really need the 'kill 20 something' missions", aside from that, you'd just go with a group and murder stuff, for starters it's a nice idea to grab like, 3 or 4 buddies and go siege a small outpost or something, maybe capture a couple resources, that will start you up with the concept of siege and stuff..

Also, everyone needs at least 2 stone ballistae in the inventory

You can have plenty of fun at your level! Just keep an eye on your map -- it will show where recent battles have taken place and what keeps are under attack. Then just fast travel as close as possible and join the fray!

How will they show in the map ? are they the red items I'm guessing ?

Console or PC?
At your level you should choose one of the non-vet campaigns.
Make sure your Battle leveling is turned on in your settings.
Find a group and get some training. Better yet, join a PVP guild in your faction.
As soon as you earn some AP Buy Seige and learn how and when to use what.
Make sure you have Grand soul gems to rez your buddies.
Food is important out there, use it often and keep your weapon enchants charged.
Practice, practice, practice.

The quests are nice at vet levels but most lowbies don't want to level out of non vet campaigns too quickly. The kill quests are good to have and maybe grab a Scout quest just in case you get in the area where it is. Yes the npcs are tough at your level, you need a group.

THEDKEXPERIENCE

PVP is totally doable at level 29. I was doing it at level 10. You won't be a monster but here are a few tips for you.

1) Unless you're running with a guild don't bother with the two quests that have you capture a keep or other resource. Even a VR 14 with 3600 champion points couldn't do these by themselves.
2) Always take "kill 20" and "scout" missions. Scouting only requires showing up somewhere and hitting A. Kill 20 of X is self explanatory.
3) Never walk in Cyrodiil. Either ride a horse, or sneak. Rapid maneuvers will save you tons of time.
4) Until you get higher "end game" powers try and equip spells that hit more than 1 opponent and absolutely have some ranged option. You'll get 50% more kills than you deserve which means more XP.
5) Always eat food.
6) Repair kits are great sources for Alliance Points.
7) Find a friend. Cyrodiil is very unforgiving to solo ventures. If you can't self heal you're in for a lot of horse riding.
8) Stay off main roads. Easiest way to get run over by 20 people.
9) Stock up on grand soul gems and pay it forward. People remember who healed them. If you PVP enough you'll see pls hi of the same allies and, even, opponents.
10) Read your death recap.
11) Don't stand in red.
12) Understand that you will die on occasion.
13) Make mental notes on who to avoid. All VR14s are not created equal. With that said ...
14) Don't attack VR 14s.
15) In big battles use NPCs and other players as meat shields.
16) Don't fight with honor. Your opponents won't. Attacking the 1 straggler at the back of a pack Scooby Doo style is an example.
17) There really is no one right way to play. It really depends on what you want out of it. If you're a SOLO YOLO guy find a good spot to gank people. If you like big battles join a guild. If you want to be Emperor quit your job.
18) Lastly if you have an objective on the other side of the map try and join a campaign that your team is winning.

I know how you feel. I started to travel cyrodiil right at level 10. Guards of the other fractions are way to difficult at that level same is true for most other players you might encounter, but still you can have some fun.

My advice would be to thread carefully while in cyrodiil, disguise your steps and sneak or get a really fast and strong mount to carry you. If you enjoy to play solo take scouting missions. They will not bring much AP, but you can finish them without the need of fighting and get to know the towns and their inhabitans, the caves and location of the land.

Use the shrine travel to get to those keeps your alliance owns and always keep an eye out for nearby battles (if you follow the chat you will soon get to know the scouts out in the field reporting enemy movements) ... join in these battles if you want to. But again, be carefull. Try to avoid open battles as most of your enemies will just make sweetrolls of you! Take a supportive position, help to fire siege engines, heal your alliance members and buff them with everything you can offer ... extra health is just as valuable as extra magica or stamina.

Oh, and there are some small quest you can pick up while traveling. Each will lead you to one of the cities in cyrodiil. These are small "fetch and bring"-Quests that can be accomplished by everyone who is able to sneak past enemy-guards.

Well, if you get bored of sneaking ask for a group in chat and travel and fight in a mob.

I respectfully disagree. I've been in Vet (Xbox, NA, Chillerend) since launch. I really believe I am waaaaaaaay better at PVP now because of it. I only have about 46 champion points on my VR5 but melt VR14s all the time. Maybe I would have done this anyway, but I've learned how to deal with overpowered characters from day 1.

Playing with better players makes you better. Just like in real life.

What helped me most was joining a small guild. Find a group you can play with using TeamSpeak or Mumble or something similar. It may be intimidating but just jump into the deep end.

Also, accept death in PvP lol. You'll die a lot. Try learn a little from each death and avoid being annoyed (easy, right?)

There are also a lot of PvP videos on youtube and Twitch. Just make sure they're from the latest version of the game. (or at least after version 1.6)

1) Get an addon to monitor your AP. Defending a keep or ressource yields AP, but you will only get it when you are in the area at the time the AP are handed out (btw: it doesn't matter if or how you fought) . WAIT for the tick! It might take some time, but you will likely miss it if you do not use an addon.

If you get killed during defending stay put for a while. A comrade might find and resurect you and you will get AP if you stay, even if you are dead.

If you leave the location the battle takes place to early you will not get any "defending"-keep reward (which are good btw).

Forgot to mention. I am playing on Xbox.. Only add on I have is a my tv. Maybe some Cheetos...

You can teleport to one of your keeps near to where you want to go as long as there is a line linking where you are to the building you want to go. The lines are coloured by faction.

The teleport shrines are the blue glowy bowls with the mages waving their hands in the air. Just click it. Near one of the side doors is the siege vendor you can buy siege equipment from, with gold or alliance points.

Oil pots for over doors, gates, or over inner flags. Trebs [stone] for walls, elemental for hurting infantry on walls, ballista for infantry. Catapult for both. Rams are the best for main gates but you need brave souls to be up there with you to man it, plus healers and protection.

What I see a lot of people do on my server is defend on the second floor and do not cover the flags or the hole the enemy are about to pour through. And they are soon overrun by the enemy. I have held 20 enemy off with one ballista facing a side door. And one pot over the first flag of an inner keep [players are wising up not to go charging straight in sadly though].

If you are heading to a keep under siege from the nearest friendly keep do not take the direct route alone. You have 50% chance to get ganked by enemy players in stealth. When you are near the besieged keep, sneak in through the door until you get in to safety,

If you see another player in the distance get into stealth until you know it is friend or foe.

Open your map, look for crossed swords or assaulted keeps. Head there and counter siege and play defensively until you learn the ropes. If you die to someone play back the scene in your mind and use the death log to see what you did wrong and how you can get better.

Sneak on your way TO scouting objectives, then run/ride back!
its very exciting making a mad dash, & if you get caught & killed you get back to the turn in board faster.


& YES! watch the map, take the opportunity to defend keeps or operate siege engines, & have fun!

<< That + you can see the crosses in different colors. Red indicates Ebenheart Pact, Yellow indicates Aldmeri Dominion and blue indicates Daggerfall Covernant.
*So if you play in Aldmeri Dominion do not go to crosses that are red and blue, go to the ones that are yellow/blue or yellow/red - you don't want to run into 2 groups of enemy players without having any friends around you. Same goes for if you play on Ebonheart Pact side etc.

Remember to fed your horse with speed, as you will be spending a lot of time riding in Cyrodiil.
