So what's up with empty Cyrodiil?

Not empty in the sense of no players, but just empty spaces. There is barely grass growing. In other zones of the game there are dozens of small features that develop the scene: cats, dogs, animals, the occasional snake or bug.

It's like Cyrodill is Chernobyl. Something went nuclear and everything died within 50 miles. (Or did the devs just get lazy ...)

Apparently, these critters conspired against war invading their peaceful homelands and caused much hassle to combatants and developers alike. A mass extinction campaign was the only feasible solution to break their resistance. Sadly, that left us in this poor and barren land, where even the farmers can't get meat to grow...

Kidding aside: The critters really were removed almost completely from Cyrodiil in an attempt to minimize server load. It was done to curb lagging.

Saw a deer in a tree yesterday... Think they are all hiding in the trees... The fighting scares them. Or maybe the slaughterfish ate everything?

I dont know, i think the lag monster may have gotten hungry and killed all the creatures before it killed me...

I think Cyrodil was hastily added to the game later. Theres 18 massive zones, they have worked at least 4+ year on those. Maybe they realized the game was so off, so they decided to add Cyrodil and make it PVP game. Cyrodil looks like some 1 year work, or even half year.

Cyrodiil****** btw but Cyrodiil is PLENTY detailed, have you not covered the entire place yet and if so, were you even looking at the screen? There are a lot of untold stories to be found with some of the settings and books you'll find (non-lore books), etc.. It's nice to find such hidden gems among all the fun madness that can go on in Cyordiil. Don't write it off as if they didn't put the same love and effort into crafting Cyrodiil... it's also the largest zone in the game. It's about the size of an alliance zone. Actually, the opposite is true. Cyrodiil and PVP was the focus of the game from the very beginning of development. The devs began with Cyrodiil (using all of the info and development from TES4: Oblivion) and worked their way out. This is the reason, for example, that lockpicking is based on TES4:Oblivion and not TES5:Skyrim.

An earlier poster hit the nail on the head, and the devs told us explicitly a long time ago... Cyrodiil has been made sparse intentionally in order to reduce lag from graphics. Lag is an extremely difficult issue even now, as it is for all PVP games, and the vast numbers of people involved make it much more difficult (not to mention the smegheads who create intentional lag). So anything they can do to reduce the amount of data that must flow between the servers and player computers is necessary.

They emptied Cyrodill to prevent lag

ZoS has done a terrible job utilizing the space in Cyrodiil. Their Tower defense game design localizes objectives to the keeps and so the only territory used is pretty much a straight line between keeps. Don't get me wrong. The current dynamic is much better than when there were Forward Camps, but still, as you say...there's alot of empty space that could be better utilized by placement of meaningful PvP objectives throughout Cyrodiil.

I would imagine that the emptiness helps with reducing the lag. The more structures and things there that the video card has to produce drops FPS.

I would really like to see more structures around and what not, but not at the cost of increasing Lag. It's already out of control and killing the game as is.

Yes, and there is also a Setting / Graphics that you can use to turn the display of grass "off" to "increase performance" -- although I'm not sure that it eliminates the display of all grasses entirely. I haven't used it to see what happens.

i enjoy exploring cyrodil, trying to remember the towns and landmarks from oblivion, seeing how they're being presented here.

it's fascinating, there are dangerous locations, skyshards to be found, quests to be run, enemies to be killed, and there's always the possibility of some AvA dust up, so it's worth a look, imho.

fishing too, if you're into that. what more could you ask for?

Cyrodiil sure looks a little bland. When i ventured into the zone last May, thought there might be a resemblance to Cyrodiil from the Oblivion game.

Common sense is enough here, what you seems to lack. Compare Cyrodil to 18 massive PVE zones, 20+ dungeons, public dungeons, Trials etc etc. Each alliances doesnt even have own siege weapons, what was meant to be one of the selling point, called Alliance Pride, let me ask where its when each alliance use samekind of castles and siege weapons. I bet one can make Cyrodil in less than year with team of 50 guys.
