Over 50. First (computer) game: Pong that we re-wrote for TRASH-80, plus this little sidescroll game blowing up submarines with your destroyer that we wrote ourselves.

Pong is such a great, simple game for an amateur programmer. I programmed my version of it for PC when I was around 14 in GWBasic.

Not too old and not too young.

PC/NA/Dunmer and Azura worshiper for life

I started with Atari, Odyssey, and Colecovision. I still have an Atari 7800 that plays most of its games.

Then came the C64 Genesis, and the total computer conversion.

My first MMO was WOW, but I quickly converted to Lord of the Rings Online which remains my MMO favorite of all time.

I play ESO for a mixture of the gameplay, lore, and the immersion.

My dad bought it for me when I was 8. I had a bunch of games for that: Sonic the Hedgehog (8-bit version), Altered Beast, Castle of Illusions, Marble Madness, Psycho Fox and Ace of Aces

Oh, and if you booted that without a cartridge, you got to play Alex Kidd in Miracle World :p

Had one of those old Pong things in the 70s, but the first gaming system I really remember was the Atari 2600. I had a Commodore 128 (which was useless except it had a C64 mode), and my first CRPG was Bard's Tale 3. Man, I played the heck out of that game but never finished it.

In college, I played MUDs on 386s machines that didn't even have Win 3.1 on them.

Gaming highlights, for me, include Masters of Orion I and II, an old Dune game that came on something like 10 floppies, Half-Life, and Jedi Knight. Didn't game for a few years, then discovered Morrowind, which is still my favorite game of all time. Oblivion and Skyrim followed, and I often contemplate DOSBoxing Daggerfall and even Arena, Battlespire, and Redguard one of these days. Somewhere in there came KOTOR, KOTOR II, and Mass Effect.

MMOs I avoided until SWG. Played that for a couple of years, only leaving when they introduced a Collectible Card Game--which was basically real-world gambling for in-game items. Tried SWTOR, which had a lot of good and a lot of bad. And, of course ESO.

    Oh, and Minesweeper is life.

Edit: Also I did a little math with the poll and estimate the average age so far to be 34.

Since most of the data is anywhere from 6 months to 18 months old, that would increase it a bit, but at the same time not all those players are necessarily still playing. Also taking the median of the top age range as 60 may be a bit liberal, but lowering it to 55 or 57 only drops the average by about 0.5.

On PC NA server it seems like the demographic is older than what I would typically expect for most games. I'm pretty sure the majority of folks in my main guild are over 30, and I know for a fact that there are quite a few over 40, over 50, and at least a few old enough to be retired.

Its probably because most parents are less willing to buy gaming computers for their kids. Most "regular" i.e. cheap pcs don't come with a discreet gpu. And 3-400 dollars isn't that bad for a console.

Wait, you're saying that most of the people I think must be teenagers on Auridon zone chat are actually legally able to drive, vote, drink, etc.?

One thing Facebook has taught me is that age and maturity don't necessarily go hand in hand. I see far more absurd drama (and bad spelling) from my aunt and her friends and even my older friends than from my nieces who are much younger (and not the kids of that aunt, so it's not an aversion to mums drama).

Sometimes I think it's because older people didn't grow up with online communications so that don't know how to handle it as well - before the internet if your friend went to a party without you there's a good chance you'd never know, so you could easily believe they never did anything like that without you. Then Facebook comes along and you see all the photos, or video, or they're live streaming the damn thing and some people will freak out that their friend dared to have fun without them.

And of course feeling disconnected from the other person because you can't see them, and forgetting to factor that into your writing - you can't rely on body language or tone of voice to get your meaning across when it's just text, so it's a whole different way of communicating.

My richer friends had IBM's that cost about $6k, some of us had commodore 64's and I had an Amiga 500 for ages just playing F16 flight sim and other random single player games. Doom and the Civ series grabbed me later in life.

As far as online games go It was Tom Clancy's: Rogue Spear then Battlefield 1942, very early ARMA, WoW, Rift then ESO.

No wonder the forums are toxic. Look at all the children on here.

    Heh.

Joking aside, would you believe ESO is my first MMO? You may be asking why (or not, but I'm going to tell you anyway): I've an addictive nature. I knew MMOs would cause me problems because I'm one of those who says "Just one more quest. Now I have to go to the bank. Wait. I need to ..." and end up divorced, cat less, and my coworkers wondering if I shower at the local landfill.

To limit this, I play the game on console.

    Yep. Cured that real quick.

41 wife/mother/gamer. I started gaming way back in the day on Playstation (yeah the one with no numbers behind it). Once I owned a PC it has been all PC since then. I tried to go back to a console to play with my teenagers, but I just couldn't do it.

So I am exclusively PC on NA server.

The first games that got me into PC gaming were Diablo 2 LoD, Morrowind (so this expansion was sweeeeet for me), and one of the Civilizations games.... 2 maybe. Eventually found my way to WoW, and MMORPG games. My husband and I actually met on a virtual community called SecondLife several years ago. He moved to the US from the UK after a few years of visiting and a long distance relationship (with LOTS of gaming together), and we are now married and have a 3 year old son.
