Character stopped levelling and problems with searching

Hi. I have just reached Level 16. When you push start to go to the main menu, normally the progress bar will fill up as you kill things, however mine is stuck. There is no progress at all despite plenty of kills. Also, when you kill something they turn yellow allowing you to search them for items. This seems to have stopped too. Im am very confused. Have tried logging out and restarting xbox one several times but nothing is happening. I have tried other saved charcters at lower levels and they work fine. Whats going on??

You have probably out-leveled them. Kills must be within a certain level range of you to get experience and loot.

Ah really? I was fighting Dreughs level 10 for ages and effectively getting lots of items out of them (weapons, glyphs, armour etc) basically farming, and now nothing happens. That would make sense if this is how the game is programmed?

So do I have to start attacking higher ranked enemies for me to actually level up at all?
This game is too clever for its own good
