Saving money for VET 1? At what level do you buy gear?

So I am 41 Fire DK, should I be saving gold for VET 1 level gear or at what VET levels do you look to upgrade all Armor sets?
Mix of PVP and PVE...

How much gold would I be looking at in general for a full set on avg?

I really don't want to craft, want to buy it. thanks

Get a set of all blue armor level 42. That will take you to level V1. Then get another set of blue armor at that level. You can easily use that for 2-5 levels. There's really no reason to get higher color armor items prior to V14 unless your really big into PVP. If you spend a lot of time in PVP, then go with purple armor instead of blues at all levels you get them.

Might as well save it for VR16. You'll be fine with quest rewards and drops leveling up.

It depends on the quality of the items. On PC NA, you can request the services of a crafter and get a full set of armor for a few thousand gold, assuming you want it blue quality. If you want purple quality, you can expect to pay anywhere from 15k-25k. i would recommend getting a blue quality armor set for V1 and using it till about V6, then getting another one. Don't spend crazy gold until you hit VR16

If you don't craft it's better to wait till max lvl, I craft mine every 10 lvls from 10-40 then every 2-3 lvls at vet ranks so it can get expensive. With the new patch coming that will lower xp needed and earned at vet ranks I may only craft every 5 lvls. Right now I can usually make it to vet 3 in the first zone with eso plus, so the grind to vet 14 won't be so bad. Hoping I might get there before I'm done with silver.

i am currently about to hit VR8 and i am in 5/5 darkstride 2/5 dreugh king sets and all of them are between vr5 and vr7. All of these have been drops off of random baddies.

They always seem to drop around the same time for me (locations maybe?) and i didnt pay for anything!

yes I buy gear at max level as levelling content is not really challenging enough to warrant the expense.

Why would you not craft gear? Crafting in this game is very very easy to do and cost you nothing. You could craft purple gear at every vet level and it be easy to do. An earnest question

    Wait until Vr16.
Craft yourself until then. The game does not require anything higher than green gear either.

I generally dont buy armor but vr1 would be the earliest. Very few items are bind on equip and can be resold after use with the exception of set items and what not.

I just use purple weapons all the time and sell when I level a couple times.

I don't craft because I don't want to spend time doing all the research/mats and assorted other mundane tasks associated with that or any other craft. I would rather spend my time in PVP or PVE or on guild trader stuff.

Thanks for all the advice guys..!

I craft all of my gear (using different crafted sets depending on the character and the build) every 4-8 non-vet levels (I usually make my stuff blue quality, but sometimes purple - if I didn't have a lot of upgrade mats I would either reduce the frequency at which I craft a new set, or upgrade only to green). I always craft a new set at VR1 upgraded to purple, and then every few vet ranks after that (depending on whether I want to have a set of gear that uses a higher rank of glyph, or whether I want to have a set of gear that uses the next rank of mats).

Aside from the occasional piece of jewelry for a set, I haven't ever bought gear for anything below VR14.

You might want to reconsider that. Some crafting skills actually have gameplay influencing effects.Alchemy and Provisioning for example should be leveled up on each character. Lucky enough this game has the most simple and least time consuming crafting system in existence.

    Why?
Alchemy- Medicinal use passive 30% increased potion effects duration . Very important for any build using potion buffs, that is many of the better end game builds..
Provisioning -Connoisseur and Gourmand adds 20minute more to food and drink buffs. Important when you start using expensive purple Vr14 food and drink.

Also even if you are not planing to do any crafting it is a good idea to max out each line to get the better material from deconstruction passive . It is a much better idea to decon every worthless purple drop than to sell it for 40gold. Since worthless purple drops a lot at max level the few skill point investment is worth it.

Because the skills you get increase potion duration (alchemy) and food/drink duration (including xp potions) regardless of whether you made the stuff yourself. Very useful extras.

As for buying gear, never until max level. Craft your own if you can, if not just use what drops. My alt is vr4 and still wearing lvl 40 crafted gear, I should really upgrade by now but..well, not like I need to (though I would if doing group dungeons)

If you are just grinding to level up, it's pretty easy to grind with broken armor. I've found armor is not even necessary until you get to where you want to start doing PVP or pledges, DSA, Trials, etc. I only wear armor because I want to level up my medium, light and heavy armor skills.

When starting a new character, I have a set of lowbie level 1 or level 4 willow's path set made with all exploration trait, (5 medium, 1 light, 1 heavy for stam build or 5 light, 1 med, 1 heavy for magicka build).

This weak level 4 willow's path set lasts all the way to around Veteran Rank 10 or VR12, when I can finally start to put together a build and test it for PVP.

When your armor breaks while grinding, you notice it because your regen goes down. With Willow's Path at least you get 15% stam & magicka regen even with broken armor. Combine it with magicka/stamina blue drinks and you don't even notice the armor is broken.

If you are doing PVP below VR1, your armor doesn't matter at all, you could be fighting naked and your armor and spell resist would be the same. The 5 pc set bonuses do matter, however, so willow's path is helpful for this as well.

When I got to VR1 I just setup my build how I wanted it with 2 x 5 set bonuses and a third 3 set bonus all green VR1 armor and blue rings/neck. Blue VR1 crafted weapons. Everything crafted myself except rings/neck and 2 pieces of set bonus armor that you can't craft.

That's all you need to do almost all content, then just get to VR14 and upgrade or when VR16 comes out.

Did gold vet and silver non vet pledges daily using VR1 gear with no issues.

Is it actually worth crafting at low levels? I deconstruct/research every time I go to empty my bag.

I have loads of low level materials (only lvl25 on this alt) and lots of upgrade mats but never crafted before and was wondering if it's actually worth the time , don't need gold and I never die but now wondering if it's worth me spending time to level up crafting (I'm a pet build Sorc atm) and only have a couple of hours a day to play.

It's not about which traits you know, it's about how many traits you know. Each crafted set has a minimum requirement. In order to craft Death's Wind items, for example, you need to know at least 2 traits on the item you want to craft. It doesn't matter which 2 traits you know, as long as you know 2 or more. To craft a Hunding's Rage item you need to know 6 traits on that item, but again it doesn't matter which 6 traits you know.

Your best bet is to start researching the traits you actually plan on using first. Depending on the item, I like Infused, Reinforced, or Divines, so those would be my recommendations on the traits to start researching first (although for low level characters Exploration can be nice).

I buy gear only for max level. V14 current, but now saving up to replace it with V16 gear.

I also only buy it for the toons that are my favourite and I want to use for pledges etc.

Until that time, I find something close to what I want at end game and I craft it with my Main.

Get a full set of gear at V1 mixing and matching the set pieces to your liking. Then do it again every gear Tier. Don't get better than Green if you go this route. Blue is a waste because you are going to get gear every 3-4 lvs. IF you want to get gear less often, get blue or purple. I played in Purple V4 gear till V9 no problem. I plan on keeping my V9 set till V12 or 14.

You should reconsider your stance on leveling in crafted gear. This is preferable for most. The dropped gear for low level toons is hard to acquire and usually a mix and match of multiple sets that don't add up to much.

Crafted sets you might be able to find lower level warlock. I believe there's v1 out there. 5 piece perhaps. Don't know what you'll pay for it.

However you should really go crafted. It's cheap and effective for what you need while leveling. Just ask in trade guilds for a crafter. I would rock 5 light / 1 medium / 1 heavy until w everything is leveled up.

    Gear for Magicka DK leveling:
5 seducer / 3 magnus is always what I use.

Also fully level Mages guild line, fighters guild line, sword and board and destruction staff.

    I created V1 gear. V5 gear. V14 gear.
You can leave everything blue or purple as far as quality level.

uhm what kind of effects traits have is described in your research Menu. Also... You don't need specific traits to be able to craft a certain set. Only the number of researched traits matter. Of course if you want to optimise your built you might want to research things that you like to use. A lot of people swear on Impenetrable and Precise. But Training and Exploration are also good traits for leveling.

Thanks for the help. I just really started researching things and that's what I've done, just research the things I like best. Wanted to figure that out because I'm about to hit v3 and already bought all the gear I'm going to be wearing when I do, that are all set pieces 3 of 2 and a necklace and books of another. I couldn't figure out how to make any of it myself. Again thanks
