Right now I am using the apprentice but I am wondering if there is something better I should be using for my mage?

The Apprentice: Damage ++ Sustain --
The Mage: Damage+ Sustain+
The Atronach: Damage-- Sustain ++

The Mage is the best choice overall. It increases your overall damage, gives you a bit more ressources and makes damage shields stronger. Another benefit is, that it makes spells like Elemental drain and Harness Magicka more effective, as they scale with your max Magicka pool.

The Apprentice is full damage. It increases your spell penetration by 5120, which is 8% more damage. The main difference between the Mage and Apprentice is, that the mage increases your overall damage and also your damage against damage shields. You can't overpenetrate players in pvp. So it can be, that the apprentice won't give you benefits against light armor enemies.

However, you can overpenetrate monsters. So the apprentice is definately the first choice for PvE.

And Atronach increases your Magicka regeneration by a lot and gives your sustain a huge boost. Especially good for unexperienced Mages, because you can sustain much longer.
I myself use the Apprentice right now, especially because it's getting buffed soon.

Well and then there is the Ritual boon. But I dare to say, that 1400 more Magicka (Mage) is better for healing than a few % more healing. But I expect the ritual to get buffed either. Might be interesting for healers then.
