Crime & Punishment

WelkinDust
So I haven't played at all since a month or so after initial release on PC. But I created a new character today to play with some friends who just recently got the game. I got through the completely changed tutorial and all that. I get to the first area for Dominion players and start the first quest. I see an enemy near the warehouse attacking another player, so I attack that enemy. Only I miss, and hit some civilian behind the enemy, who dies almost instantly. I am immediately branded a murderer and criminal and the guard destroys me. I respawn... only to have the guards destroy me again. And I guess dying makes you lose gold, so now I'm broke. I'm stuck with a 50g bounty that I can't pay off because I just barely started and don't HAVE any gold. And I can't play with my friends because if I even set foot near the settlement the guards destroy me again.

Seriously, what gives? This experience made me want to quit then and there. I've never played with this new crime system so I didn't know that I could accidentally hit and murder a civilian so easily. Why don't new players start the game with the setting to never hit innocents turned on? Why is the bounty payment so frigging high when I'm only level 3?

This really needs to change. I might as well just delete the character and start over because doing so would take less time than waiting for the damn bounty to fall off. This is ridiculous.

    Cool story bro.
Look at the bright side. Now that you came back to the game you can whine on the forums.

Or something a little more constructive...

You can turn off "attack innocents" in the options.

IMO, should be set to that by default.

Thank you, this is exactly what I'm saying. I didn't even know that there was such a setting until I had been killed by the guards 4 times and asked in Zone chat how the heck I could keep from accidentally hitting civilians in the future.

What is amazing is, if you get caught stealing an apple and refuse to pay the fine, or if you get caught murdering a civilian, the penalty is exactly the same.

Have to agree that defaulting "attack innocents" to on creates a fairly brutal learning curve - I was on an early-made Alt that I hadn't changed the setting on - controller slipped, accidentally hit a button and rained lightning down on some poor townsperson, who I was then forced to kill in self-defense.

Btw, 50g should be clear by now, OP. :)

50g bounty, lol. That takes like 3 minutes to clear or 30 seconds to fence.

I agree that it would be better set to on when you start.
But other then that its a whine port. use freaking 3 min and get the 50g and they get on with the game.

Yeah, stuff like that happens when one isn't careful. No big deal, get away as soon as you get a bounty if you can, stay in the wilds for a bit, that small a boutny will be gone in mere minutes.

If you get a bigger bounty, still keep away from the guards and kill wilderness mobs until you have enough coin to pay, or hide in the outlaw refugee until it blows over. Once you get to level 10, there is also PvP in cyrodil, where no law exists.

Personally I prefer to play with the option enabled, (and have yet to attack mistakenly - all the murdering my main has done was quite deliberate ;) ) but... each as they choose.

Wait, its not that way in real life?

No, in real life certain people get 30 days probation for murdering someone, while someone else gets a life sentence for having a joint in their pocket.

Involuntary Man-slaughter still carries a hefty punishment.
