Personally I dislike the way armor is right now. Why can't I be a magicka heavy armor user or a stamina light armor user?
The benefits shouldn't reflect a particular build type focus.

Nothing is stopping you from doing this. You are trading magic-oriented buffs and resists for 4-5 times the amount of armor. Heck, my current heavy chest-piece has almost as much armor as the rest of my light gear combined. It fits perfectly with the lore of powerful mages not running around in full heavy armor.
That being said, I wouldn't complain if there were both magicka and stamina oriented skills associated with each armor type, especially since most classes have at least a few magical abilities. The general benefits should still lead to certain roles, though. Quick and nimble fighters and magical sorcerers should always favor light; tanks and heavy hitters should favor heavy.

But it's too costly in endgame to give up the bonuses you get from mixing armors. I'd rather roll 7/7 and be a juggernaut like the good Talos intended. Everyone says you have freedom of choice in this game to play, specialize and customize how you want but everyone knows that if you don't tow the line you don't get good groups for endgame content. Doesn't matter if you want to be a unique snowflake. lol
The spellslingers spend too much time reading books. It causes muscle atrophe. Put them in heavy armor and they wouldnt be able to move.
