Please no text chat on console.

Keyboard cowboys make sense on PC.

You are literally wasd'ing at your fingertips.

On console, voice chat is more culturally useful.

Just like the keyboard is close at hand on PC, and makes sense for text chat. No argument.

But.
Consoles are a bit more relaxed and fun.
From your couch across the living room, trying to read some no mic's henpecked message is tedious.

No one wants to friend the guy with no mic who responds minutes later to an old conversation.

I am the nicest player in our group and usually get relegated to reading the no mic's comments aloud to the party or group.

So now two players are distracted from helping the team.

'Yeah the left one'.

What left one? The one in this delve or the one we just passed? What does this message mean? No don't explain, just jump once if you want this left.
OK. No jump. I guess that means the other left. But maybe he didn't jump because he was typing.

'Yes'

Ahhhhhhhh. What does yes mean???!!!! Yes to this left, yes to that left ??

Oh no.

( I am killed by the enemy players in the cyrodill dungeon I am trying to raid for sky shards. )

Oh yay armor damage and a thousand yard horse ride back, thanks text buddy. I was the nice to interact with you and you got me killed. Or left behind from the group because everyone else with mics just kept riding.

Console text chat is at its best, benign. And has the possibility of annoying kind players trying to help the micless.

It will certainly give trolls and jerks and PvP griefers and fun new way to ruin your experience.

With the added bonus of taking development revenue that could be used to make new dlcs.

My problem is with being put into a group of people all over the place and being in a dungeon waiting for 20 minutes.
They're in their league VC or whatever so mic is useless.
At least with text chat, I could tell them to hurry up or we could communicate which dungeon we were doing.

Could do with being able to link items in chat. Really miss that when you find something that someone else in the group might make use of pain talking them what it does stats etc.

    And let's be completely candid.

The keyboard cowboys from this forum that really want the text chat shoehorned into the console version are rarely happy with anything.

I would bet money that after zos eventually concedes to the sour grapes on the forums and adds text chat it, they will be met not with thanks, but an avalanche of brand new complaints.

Can we just save the development revenue and have the keyboard cowboys start a few threads complaining about tex chat on consoles now.
You might as well as I don't think half of these guys play the game anymore.

Here are some examples of possible keyboard cowboy complaint threads,

'Zossss you suck!!! Text chat doesn't have the shade of purple I like to use!"

'Zos please read this, I quit this game because there's no ampersand functionality'

'Some guy keeps asking for my phone number in text chat, creepy'

There you can have all the complaining you want in these forums using your favorite method of complaint and as an added bonus no actual players will be bothered by you.

We need text chat at least for cities. It's the best way to sell/ trade crafting services or certain goods. Ps4 has keyboard support I'm sure X1 does as well. I hate that I can't post a wtb/wts in a trade chat.

But text chat is included on most other mmo's!!!!

    Sure.

    So what?

If ESO tries to make wow lite, they get hammered for not being wow enough.

When ESO couches itself into its unique asserts such as immersion, first person etc.

It can take over a bit of unclaimed real estate in terms of game design..

I for one know text chat will come but I think it would be smarter for zos to court the casual crowd.

They can't offer the perfect mmo experience without being derided as a copy or derivative.
    So why try?

The console market is a different marketing beast. I think many of the people begging for text chat don't actually consider that its not really a comfortable fit.

    Better with kinect anyone?

The keyboard is a peripheral on the console. It creates a barrier for entry to casual users.

I don't know maybe many people like playing a game with one hand on the controller and another hand steadying a wireless keyboard tenuously on their knees from their couch across the living room.

That sounds really tedious especially when you are already in mic chat and partied up or group chatted up.

    Cue the keyboard cowboy complaints.

We are already using GroupMe on our phones to bypass not having a chat in guild so just give us the option if people dont want to use it its fine. Throw in the fact that the in game voice chat runs at very very low settings making everyone sound terrible.

(Try talking to someone in game then in psn chat).

Skin this is another one of those topics that may get heated because there is massive thread asking for it from console players and pc players alike. Before the release i was against text chat due to giving voip a chance but it is terrible and has brought some odd ones out.

Do you know any others words than "keyboard cowboys"?

But seriously, the game had enough self-imposed hindrances, having options (with the lack of add-on support) can only make the overall product better.

Text chat is a MUST. There are people with disabilities who need it. Then there are people like me who can't stand 10 different conversations at the sane time all the while listening to Wu-Tang AND Ed Sheran all at once.

Wait. You don't know how to set up the guild chat?
You know that your guild gets its own voice channel?
If you join a guild with your friends, the game always starts in guild chat.
I have to manually switch from guild chat into area chat.

Once in a guild the area chat complaints you have all stated become moot.

Use the game and not your phone. Many of the problems the text thread complains about are easily fixed with in game functions.

Mofo, I can walk you through the steps on ps4 and would be happy to explain how easy the game chat system is to use.
Thank you for posting content and attempting to further the debate.

You could easily send them a psn message to that effect or invite the to a party, most people get it and would party up.

I think many people are just missing how many options they already have available to them.

I have never had a problem. A psn party reaches across maps, regions, games even Netflix.

Text chat should be introduced for all the reasons listed here, many people have valid reasons for not using voice. The OPs concerns can be addressed on a smaller scale, by requiring voice chat be used in groups and guilds. Most mmo gamers are accustomed to having text in-game and TS or Gamevox with your party and guildmates, there's no reason not to give both communication avenues to console users.
