Don't feel alone in that. Lots of folks miss the completely open world and dynamics of both Oblivion and Skyrim. Your character could go anywhere at anytime, and do anything.
Like every other MMO, ESO is a string of connected quests, along which your character is guided. Do X, which leads to Y, which ends in Z. Deviating from the path isn't rewarded, or useful in an MMO.
I'd really like developers ... somewhere ... to break the MMO dynamic made popular by WoW.
But I'm not holding my breath.
Besides, Fallout 4 will be out in November!

I'm still stuck in Stonehaven:[ working my butt off getting out of their? I was wondering IF it's worth it. Is their a "big difference " Is it worth continuing , to play afterwards. Look I'm kinda bored with the game right now, do you finaly get to really explore the game. Other it being 40 "other" gamers, all trying to complete the same quest at the same exact time. Because I'm not feeling , the whole open world vibe yet? To truly explore "something" that some other gamer hasn't already. I know it's an MMO, but we were promised by Zenimax we would truly get to explore Tamerial. Sometimes I feel better off , going back to play Skyrim. I can't be alone, in thinking this , can I?
I understand you, really. Elder Scrolls games where always about freedom - this one is abosutly theme park MMO. Granted very nice looking, with fully voiced quests but still. What is really annoying that so many of thse hudnrets of quests you are oging to do are variations of typical fetch quests. Storyline is just slightly above average. What keeps me in eso is pvp and dungeons from time to time, but i admit im slowly loosing hope for pvp.
I can only wish it actually becomes theme park MMO. This game is missing too many amazing features for that to be true as is. This game is in the middle of MMO and a loner 'mersion game. Neither side of this argument is truly happy.

You can't really quest with anybody unless you stay on the EXACT same steps ALL the time and I play mmos to interact with family and friends that live across the country from us. We do dungeons and pvp a lot and are having a great time now.

Must be different on console; because I join guild mates on quests often...and we are all over the place in progression...granted, I'm not "doing" the quest with them, but I am helping them do their quest (or vice versa if I have a guild mate come with me).

There are still a few "chain" quests where you can get separated, especially if you already did them and picked a different"ending"... these are mostly the main story quests for a zone (not the harborage). They seem to be broken up into 2-3 main parts now, and you can't start the 2nd chain till you do the last in the first chain. You can spot them because you can't "share" any but the first of a chain.
They did fix a lot of this though, so instead of monsters and your friend going into a completely different outdoor instance, you may see yellow non-aggro baddies while your friend sees red aggro ones... and you can help.
There are also cases where you can choose different quest endings and end up fighting different end bosses for a quest and can't help each other.
I would suggest starting different class characters in all three alliance areas as you may find one that you like more than the one you already have. I'd also strongly recommend you to do the starter area for each alliance before doing the main city you enter when you leave the tutorial. Follow the Prophet's prompts and speak to the nearby quest-giver.
