Just wondering if its necessary,or if up until v ranks its mainly pick up items?.
Also will i have enought points to invest after main passives and morphs.
I currently have a point in bs,woodwork and clothing..notgoing to bother with the others.

Tldr...is it necessary.

Crafted items, so long as you improve them, are actually among the best in the game for the most part. I'm not entirely sure on late VR levels nor mass PvP players, but if you stick to 100% crafted armor and keep improving both the armor and your crafting skills, you'll be good.

Zazaaji is on target here. Crafted armor (or crafted potions, enchantments, weapons for that matter) are some of the best in the game. At end game (V14), one probably considers dropped armor from lootables ... but until then crafting gives a nice edge. Plus crafting new stuff is, well, fun.

Some player mis dropped and crafted set items. But you are able to complete any content with crafted only gear. And you are able to complete it with dropped gear.

Most guilds do have enough crafters for any needs.

So, crafting or not crafting is up to you.

Crafting is good. Crafting is difficult to become proficient in more than one or two until Vet Ranks. Pick the one you will use the most and develop that one and then buy the few things you need from crafters. For example, your Medium Armor with 2 Handed. Develop your Clothing Craft and buy the swords from a crafter.

Now, even if you are not putting points into crafting until later, you do want to do research of traits on everything. That takes time. You only need to know 2 or 3 to make some good stuff, 5 or 6 to make better stuff. It is after the 6th trait that the time to research gets insane. But you can learn 2 or 3 in a couple of weeks even without the passives that speed this up.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

From my point of view, even at V14 you still have some crafted gear that is superior to the dropped alternatives. I still use a combination of drop & crafted.

More importantly, provisioning and alchemy are probably the most useful crafts (especially alchemy). In PvP, pot-ing is incredibly powerful and alchemy not only makes supply cheaper but also offers improvements to potion effects.

That said, you have enough skill points to max two crafts easily, but I would recommend to prioritize class & weapon skills at least until mid 30s and then only take the important craft passives. Never spend points for crafting items higher than you current level.

Expect to end up with 250+ skill points at V14 if you have cleared content up to there. Use a skill calculator to estimate how many spare points you are going to have.

First thing at the beginning: start researching items as soon as you can, it will take you a looong time to finish all traits' researches.

Second: it's always better to have crafted armor, but not sooo necessary at the level 1-50 zones, I'd say.
I for one started researching and crafting only with my second character when my first was VR1 already. It was pretty late considering how long it takes to finish all traits, but it's still not too late to start wearing crafted gear only at Veteran level.
I'd use the skillpoints mainly for levelling combat skills first, later is still soon enough to put them into the crafting trees.

Third thing is, you need to break down hundreds and thousands of items at the crafting stations since this is the only way to level these skills (not by actual crafting, which one would think). You need to level these skills in order to craft items of a higher level/rank with different materials.
Look out for items that have an "intricate" trait, these help you gaining inspiration much faster, but also the normal items do the job well.
Start breaking them down as soon as you can, it's a long way.

    (Edit: typo, as usual^^)

Whether or not youll use the crafted gear it takes MONTHS to learn traits. Start early even if you arent maxing the skill line itll help to just know the traits because of the sheer amount of time it takes.

On that note currently the best item sets are drop only, Silks of the sun, morag tong, to name a few.

The passives in the skills lines are worth it too so you can upgrade your own gear.

    so TLDR yes do crafting

My advise to you is to make a ALT and make a list of all the research / traits and then mark them off as you go on..

Level your Alt as High as you can and get as many Skyshards (skill points) as possible, easy way is to make the ALT a Magicka Nightblade so he can shadow cloak in get the skyshard and get out.. or use a older character with alot of skill points your crafter..

I have one who is a dedicated crafter and I mean dedicated, he does every craft there is, all of them, and he still has enough skill points for all class skills, two weapon lines, a Armor line, Legerdemain and way more.

My first Character became my crafter, so I then made a duplicate of him and leveled the new one to VR14 and now use the Duplicate as my main combat guy / character but I always use my Crafter to make things and to steal with

And it is cool to have a fully dedicated crafter as he can be my complete "go to" guy, so for example when a New Motif like Glass comes out, I will only need one copy of the Motif and then he can make the style for all my characters if needed.

If I need to level another characters Alchemy or Provisioning, I just need to get the mats and make some low level food until he can respec and put a few skill points into the higher level passives, then buy the mats to make the highest experience generating potion or food and then level my skill to 50 by making the food/potions, etc, then I respec again to get the skill points back.

I have a question about improving. At what level in a craft does it really become viable? I get a 20% and lose everything now and it just doesn't seem worth the trouble. I'm certainly not going to try to improve something I really wanted when I made it for that low a chance.

anyway you choose you will be fine, the game offer plenty of solutions, but you get lot of achievments points if you do.

i use one mule crafter master alt with all skills, on the other alts i just got level 50 with only hirelings and chemistry in alchemy. you may respect after you reach those achievment.

You can adjust the number of upgrade materials you want to use for each upgrade you do. Use the + and - signs around the numerical to add some. Each additional temper increases the chance up to 100%. At later crafting ranks, you can spend skill points to increase the efficiency of each single temper, thus reducing the number of materials you need to apply to reach 100%

I don't bother trying at less than 80%, it isn't worth the risk.

I would recommend crafting no more than 1 craft on your main until you are level 50 or find you self with an abundance of skill points. Remember for crafting on alts, you aren't going to be able to do the highest level writs for any rewards (provisioning for the rare recipe for xp drinks for example) if you aren't at least VR9 i believe.

If you are going to craft weapons or armor that require trait research i would say start soon, on your main or alt. It's a time barrier for research.

Even if you don't craft now, its a good idea to do research. This way, when you do decide to craft, you'll most likely have it done or almost done.
I made the mistake of not doing so when I first played, and had regretted not doing it.

crafting is pretty decent in this game. provisioning and alchemy are straight forward increases, while armor and weapon crafts will get you some decent sets and the ability to upgrade dropped sets to higher quality. Overall crafting very worthwhile.
