No text chat for consoles is a hilariously bad choice

My friend has it for console and got a refund the day after, he didn't know there would be no way to type to others or to sell items like an actual mmo.

Me as a pc user could totally understand his frustration, it just blows me away that they couldn't have a txt chat option, even games made in 95 have text chat, ultima, everquest etc, this is the only game on the planet that doesn't have txt chat, that's supposed to be an mmo.

Theres pros and cons. I honestly think it might go either way. Hopefully Zen gives answer soon though, do I need to buy keyboard or mic. No chat and voice chat might give stronger community but chat is most definitely the mass option but it brings trolling and all kind of nonsense.

I agree we need it on consoles.

With that being said, in before lock with a greename redirecting you to the 22 page thread.

There is a con to having the ability to communicate in a video game, can you please fill me in? I don't know if I've been playing mmos for over 20 years so I would like to know what the con is.

Did I say I like it? No, and I don't. I just said that because literallly EVERY text chat console thread being made gets locked and redirected to that 22 page thread. I guarantee this one will too when a mod or ZoS employee sees it.

Read the op, it clearly states I don't care if it gets locked or moved,

it is ONLY for ZoS to read and comprehend, that ZERO player interaction is not tolerable in 2015.

Yeah that certainly seems weird. But then, ZOS has certainly made a lot of weird design choices for this game. I sometimes think they have a person at the office who jokingly keeps throwing around bad ideas, but people keep taking them seriously.

    I read it already.

Really though, I agree with you. It needs it, and ZoS really has been completely ignoring what the majority of console owners want. Both this text chat and wanting to see character names instead of Gamertags/PSN ID's, ZoS just seems to be ignoring. Not trying to insult ZoS or anything, but it really seems to be the case.

I was shocked, to say the least, when I realized there wasn't a text chat. One of the best things about MMORPGs is the huge trade/guild chats and RP servers/potential. I cannot begin to fathom why or how any game developer could think a MMO without a text box makes any sense...

    Huge disappointment on that front.

There are pros to not being able to interact with other players/friends in a MMO?
I've seen auction house done better too. There's a MMO auction house gold standard by now.

I believe ZOS stated in latest preview that displaying character names is too much programming work for them to bother, so they went with easier for them option.

Voice Chat is fine, what's needed is the PB to actually try and talk. I've heard some great convo's going in guilds and in area

Problem is mostly the PB .. text is easier, more convenient etc because they can't be ***** to take the time to learn to game as is.

It used to be a game was launched and the PB learnt how to do x,x,z

Nowadays it's a game is launched (or beta'd) and the PB then tries to alter it to them
ZoS please understand everyone thinks and pronounces things differently, so please add to your 'rules' that things get removed if the Mod doesn't actually quite understand phrasing

I thought the same thing when I started this on Xbox, but to tell you the truth its not that bad. Almost everyone has a mic and you can join 5 guilds. Which means you can always find out where the fight is. Now its going to take time for guilds to get organized and get their alliance down but after that it should be fine. Every guild also has about 4 channels. As long as guilds have good leadership and direction this is going to be some increasable PVP.

Voice chat has the same problem. Trolling and harassment is not brought on by a certain communications channel, it's caused by the people playing the game. Trolls gonna troll, haters gonna hate, bullies gonna bully, no matter what channel they use.

I agree but worst trolls are too timid to use voice chat.

We seriously need text chat like yesterday, there's no alternative to being able to communicate properly with other players and not everyone has a mic or even likes to be on mic in games. It is a seriously bad design decision to be honest. I think they should add it, but make it so its only open when you type, like how you can close it on pc with the arrow. Selling things is also a lot harder than on pc because of this, if there was an auction house it wouldn't be so bad. Don't forget the crying babies, crap music and random people talking to themselves all over the place, you have to leave area chat everytime ypu log in if you don't wanna hear that stuff.

This is something I really would like to explore.
When I play on PS4, I usually can't use the Voice chat because I'm streaming (and so chatting all the time)
I try to use the premade emotes, but i've seen no one answering me so far. I really try to socialise though...so far it's a bit weird. But i'll not say my final thoughs before to explore this new way of communicating.

While I do not disagree with poeple being unhappy about no text chat, I think we really need to try first, explore and discover this new way of playing a game and socialise. this all new and we tent to confine ourselves in our old habits. let's think outside the box and try out different things before to blame and give up, shall we?

I like it as is. I'd rather see them add buffs/debuffs affecting you then a chatbox.

I have to say I'm shockingly surprised at the lack of text chat on console. (Once mail is functioning properly more so.) Text chat is horrendously annoying with a massive player base to me. Can't read anything in zone chats because there's too many people typing, don't have it half filled with morons distracting me with whatever pops into their minds, its not taking up any screen space, don't need it to begin with (personally) because anyone I want to communicate with is either in my guild and has a mic or is a friend and can message me. I'll go ahead and stop myself there before the list gets too long. Not a popular opinion I'm sure but for what its worth I am grateful that it doesn't exist.

Can't wait for text chat yo momma contests. Or butthurt people from PvP venting into the whole world. I can't imagine why zos would have wanted players to enjoy the game for a few months till we see the real keyboard koward trolls show their socially ineptitude. Trolling in area chat pops the name of the offender and an entire crowd can report you in two buttons.

Its why there has been very little intentional trolling on voice chat.

I never really use text chat.

When doing a group dungeon, I wish there wasn't a text box. I am not interested in reading text in combat. If I am in a group with 3 people using teamspeak and 1 without, someone with teamspeak will have to type my answers to any typed questions. I hate the interruption.

Still, the option should be there. I even think there should also be a separate grouping channel.

I'm afraid I have to completely disagree.

Every console comes with a headset as standard. If you choose not to use the headset for whatever reason, then you have made your choice.

PC's on the other hand, tend to not come with headsets out of the box so text is needed there.
