When you craft, you need to set the level for the item you are making. This uses up more materials. So, did you make L4* Boots or L1 Boots?

*or what ever level you are at. You can go all the way up to 14 with Iron

A perfectly valid method to getting armor/weapons while leveling, especially the first 20 or so levels is to use the stuff you get from Mob Loot. A lot of times it's Green (Improved Slightly), sometimes its Blue (improved some more). It might not match, but it's free and you can decon it when you wear it out or get something a little better.

Crafting is good and should be pursued. Don't get me wrong on that. You can make some good stuff, make it look like you want and Crafted Sets (special armors you make at hidden crafting areas) are some of the most powerful in the game. BTW, Crafted Sets require you to know a certain number of traits, so start learning those as soon as you can. Good news is you only need to learn 2 or 3 to make some good gear.

So, while you are developing your crafting chops, use loot drops to equip your self and then craft that which you are not getting from drops.

Not a "guy", but a crafting station. Same place as for clothing.

Clothing tables are usually close by those. They have a bunch of tailoring type tools laying on them and what looks like a piece of stretched fur on a frame. Icon on the map is scissors, I believe?

There is cloth (light) armor at the beginning of the list of things you can craft and continue towards the end, the second half where armor type starts over is leather (medium). As far as deconstruction or refining, it's all at the same table.

I smell confumblance.. If it is heavy armor you are talking about, you want the smithy.

Every type of equipment is deconstructed at the same station that it is/would be built.
    • Melee weapons and heavy armor -> smithy
    • Light & medium armor -> tailoring station
    • Staves, shield & bows -> woodworking station
You can find those in every main city of the respective region by using the map view: Highlighting the symbols will show you what kind of trader/crafter/POI is behind the respective symbol. Sometimes they are bunched up under a common symbol - this means you have to watch out for the signs at shops ingame. Follow these links for pictures of the respective signs: Woodworker Station, Clothier station, Blacksmithing station.

At times you could have a lower level item that's stronger than a higher one. It has to do with the improvement color in these cases. A level 10 purple item will be better than a level 12-14 green/blue item.

My suggestion craft everything at least to green level. Deconstruct everything else you get. When you do craft do it at a place to get set bonuses. If you need help and are low on green tempers let an experienced crafter upgrade the gear so you use less tempers. I basically wore crafted gear from levels 1-50. 99% of the time the stuff I made was better. The 1% chance I found a drop with a set bonus its either a bonus that sucked or it would take forever to get the other pieces.

You need to have traits researched to be able to craft set items, so depending on how far that research has progressed, this may be not applicable.
