5 Piece Cyrodiil's Light Bonus

I need help from someone who has tested this please. An official answer from @ZOS would be nice too. The tool tip for the 5 piece Cyrodiil's Light Set bonus says "While casting or channeling a spell, incoming damage is reduced by 25%" Does this mean it does not work on instant cast spells? If I have this 5 piece set and I am casting my instant shields, will I get 25% damage reduction from the bonus? I don't want to buy the last piece to find out it doesn't work.

Does it work on any of the following:

Light Attacks
Heavy Attacks
Instant Casts (specifically my shields - Hardened Ward, Harness Magicka)

    no
yes if channeled (like lighting staff)
    no

    overall not worth

on a sidenote dmg shields get 100% of incoming dmg, they have no mitigation/reduction of any sort

Well that is disappointing. I was really looking forward to using it. The tool tip needs to be more clear. @ZOS_GaryA @ZOS_GinaBruno or anyone else, can you get an official answer on this? Casting a spell means casting a spell. If I am casting an instant cast spell, it is still casting. Thanks for your time.

If a spell has a cast time of 1 sec, you get 25% mitigation for that 1 second. If a spell has 0 cast time, you get 0 seconds of mitigation.

are you thinking if you just mash light attacks, the cooldown between each light attach counts as a "Cast time" for that light attack?

there are 3 different ways a skill works
instant->no cast time just an animation
cast time like 1.1sec ->time until your skill fires of (here the set would work)
and channeled attacks -> your skill hits multiple times during the channel (set also works here)

It's pretty clear, to me at least. It says "While casting or channeling". If a spell is instantly cast, you are done with it immediately, so you wouldn't naturally expect to have a damage decrease afterwards, right? Channeling or casting would mean something that has a timer to initiate or complete.

Exploits suck. Don't blame just the game, blame the players abusing them!

Pretty much this, the tool tip is clear IMO. While casting doesn't mean after you cast the spell or while the spell is active, it means during the actual action of casting, I.e abilities with cast time or ones that are channeled such as mist form from the vampire skill line.

I mainly wanted this to work while I cast my shields. Even though the cast time on Hardened Ward says instant, the animation makes it not be instant sometimes and it gets interrupted. If it was truly instant, it would never get interrupted. That is when I want the 25% mitigation from the 5 piece bonus to kick in. Does that make sense?

The shield you are casting is hitting you instantly the animation of the skill is not instant but that is the way ever skill works. Ever skill has an animation attached to it, and more often then not those animations can be cancelled. Your asking to be given the set bonus for the animation of the skill, if this were true then ever skill in the game would give the mitigation bonus because they all have animations attached to them. Imagine people spamming steel tornado getting a damage mitigation bonus with ever cast ? The damage of steel tornado is dealt up front but there is still short animation of it afterwards of your character spinning, see where I went with this ? And how cast time/channeled abilities differ from abilities with animations. Makes sense ?

Gotcha. I still think the tool tip needs to be changed. What you guys are saying does make sense, but the tool tip leaves room for interpretation. Casting a spell is casting a spell. If you cast an instant spell and get hit at the same time you are casting it, it should still give you the mitigation. It should say something like "When casting or channeling a spell that is not instant cast, incoming damage is reduced by 25%" I could get hit with something at that same exact moment that I cast the spell. Should the damage at that point in time not be mitigated?

Thanks for the feedback @Kildayen, we'll be sure it gets to the right place :). Please feel free to also submit this via the /feedback function in the game as well.

As mentioned by others in the thread, the bonus only applies while a spell is being cast. As instant-cast spells have a cast time of 0, the bonus will not be applied. Animations are not counted in this bonus.
