It's free to play period. You can still subscribe to it and gain XP bonuses, gold bonuses, and Inspiration bonuses for crafting, and you get an allotted amount of crowns a month but that's it.
Honestly no reason to subscribe imo, just buy crowns whenever you got the $$ and save them for DLC.Aldmeri Dominion For Life!

You must cancel your sub if you no longer wish to pay for it. The subscription now is for the "plus" membership, which offers some perks including a crown stipend at the beginning of each pay period. You can absolutely play for free now, but you have to go to your account settings and cancel the subscription if you don't want to pay for the perks.

Bro, you gotta physically go into your account and unsubscribe for it to be free-to-play. If you didn't do that, the games not going to know you want to through osmosis.

If not then you neglected to stop the sub which was required to play but is now for ESO plus benefits.
