Looks like the guards and NPC are bugged as they are not striking air, yet blood is spurting and no one is there. LOL.

    More than likely they were disconnected from the server (the one being pummelled). When this happens, it can appear that you are in the game, and even move around, but you can't really do anything. Most of the time you can be killed, but a couple of times I was invincible to being attacked, but could not do anything myself.

    Yeah, once another player came up and hit one of the guards and they moved to another position and then kept swinging ... something happened. Either bugged or what not.
