Currently it's either this or a flood/army of bots. I know what i'll vote for.

I presume ZOS blocks the account not the char. Not sure why it would lead to more spam.
I don't have this issue but maby make it for loyal members. Playing a while?

It used to be that they would recycle characters on an account to avoid being banned. They'd spam in chat, then rinse/repeat - anyone trying to report the name would get 'character does not exist' or something similar.

Even if i'm incorrect in my assertion, and the true reason was something else, the 3 delete limit completed silenced the bot spam and bot farming.
It might have also been to get around a messaging limit. Definitely it was being used to run an endless train through an easy quest to farm the gold reward, (which got a few rewards removed from the game). Basically they could script character creation/deletion to get another fresh quest reward.

The solution is to allow you to adjust the way your character looks after you've had a chance to see your character in-game. I think there should be a small cooling-down period, during which you can (for free) adjust anything about your character, from looks to name to class to race. Make it after a certain period of time, or after you hit level 5 (whichever comes first) you're locked in. And then put a barber shop in the crown store that lets you pay to make cosmetic adjustments later if you still want to.

While I'm still not that sympathetic with players who run up their character slots, I totally agree with you UrQuan.

If there was some sort of lock-in system implemented, I believe it would alleviate some of these complaints.

I just think there are better things ZOS could be spending their time working on implementing/fixing.

To wage war against the passing days? To pray to the unseen for a few breaths more? To raise grand cities from stone, and spawn new life in turn? Mankind has done this, yes, and more. But is the tapestry you weave truly of your own design?"

Trust me on this.....If you suffer from altoholism....pick a character and stick with it, or you will keep rerolling over and over and over again until your love for the game is gone.

I know this from personal experience. Took 8 months for me to get back into ESO after getting severely burnt out from alts, never reaching higher than level 35.

It sort of is a funny condition.

Yeah looking back a bit I do remember they farmed the gold reward too - seems the character delete solved a bunch of loopholes in one fell swoop.

This was a good solution at one point. It could definitely be scaled back these days though.

Why do you think it could be scaled back? And why do you think that it was only a good solution at one point? Did someone kill all the gold-sellers?

ESO is not really a big enough blip on the radar anymore. The farmers have much more lucrative targets these days.

Not even a remotely good argument. For one, the game has been seeing more and more people coming back over the past month. For another, this was a problem right at launch. It can only get worse with the re-launch.

There are very few legitimate players affected by the delete limit. And the benefits are too good to give up.

I would say "none", not "few". I can't remotely think of even 1 single example of a legit reason to delete 4 chars in 1 day.

As I said I know it is in place for bots just pointing out it is annoying and there is no way of knowing at least via the UI when you get another Delete(which should be there). But thanks for your input was just annoyed with it.

I've got 16 characters on 2 accounts. Lowest level is 16, and I've got 4 in VR levels. I actively play all of my alts (well, not since 1.6 dropped, because I still haven't completed the process of deciding where the attribute and skill points go for all of them, but once I'm done with that I'll be back to actively playing all of them). I am an altaholic.

Well, I still have that condition. I've been playing for .... well it's over 9 months since I got the rewards. And I have two accounts and fairly regularly play about 10-11 characters. Highest is 33rd. Been playing the whole time, not burned out since my play style is fairly RP and relaxed. My love for the game is not gone.

As for the original frustration - actually you have more than 8 characters per account. You have 8 on the NA server, 8 on the EU server and 8 more on the PTS server (limited lives with the latter but still). So that's 24 chances to hit a combination/character that you like.

As for names - I have a situation where a character I initially rolled up as a sorc is a much better fit as a nightblade. So I re-rolled her and am slowly (err... glacially) leveling up the "2nd incarnation". But the "first incarnation" is my highest level woodworker, and I'm not ready to delete chat character till someone else gets up there in woodworking. So, "Nellas Riverthorn" is currently my woodworker (and mostly just "teaching the craft" and "Nellas Riverthorne" is learning her nightblade-y craft.

And from an RP perspective, I justify their dual existence (or temporally overlapping states) as one of the many weird glitches that have happened in my characters lives since they were in Cold Harbor.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

So many people do not even remember the army of bots in delves and such, how hilarious! ZOS should let the bot armies return for a week and see how all these people like it then.

When you have 10-15 bots waiting for delve end bosses to re spawn and you cannot get a hit in because they instant kill it, hence no completion for the delve; will you complain then?

When you try and go farming for nodes and you have 2-4 bots waiting on each node to pick it up; will you complain then?

When you get spammed with in-game mail and whispers from bot sellers; will you comlain then?

Yea that is what I thought.

i rememeber the huge bot blobs in coldharbour. As well as nodes being collected by invisible/teleporting players.

People have no idea how bad it was if they were not there to see it.

I'm not quite following this, it sounds like it's considered "cheating" to use several characters, is this true?
That would worrying for me as I currently have 7 active characters of different races with different skill sets, all of whom are used. I get gold, materials etc the normal way, through questing and normal looking around, but pool it in the bank so all of the characters have access to it. Is that considered cheating?

Nope, what you're doing is not cheating in the slightest. The problem arises when you can create and delete many characters over a short period of time, because there are multiple one-time-only quests in the game that will net you decent gold without any combat. So there used to be botters that would do the following:
    1. create new character
    2. teleport to a friend in Riften (or another location with one of these quests - I just know that Riften was a very popular destination for these botters)
    3. do non-combat fetch quest
    4. mail quest rewards to friend
    5. delete character
    6. go back to step one

This would happen ad nauseum, making certain towns absolutely full of bots running from one quest NPC to another, and of course making massive amounts of gold for the gold sellers with no effort.
