Crafting writs at max Level are ridiculous. The rewards you get don't at all stand in relation to the amount of mats you have to spend.

It only seems to happen on one of my characters, and only on voidsteel smith writs, seems off.

    Yes and no.

Yes for equipment writs. You get less out of them than you put in.

No for consumables writs. You get more out of them than you put in.

There are degrees, of course. You can rank the consumables writs as follows from best return on investment to worst:
    Provisioning
    Alchemy
    Enchanting

The RoI on the provisioning writs is so good that it's foolish not to do them - the only good reason not to do them is if you don't have the recipe you need.

Otherwise for each writ you're using up the equivalent of half an ingredient (assuming you've got the max passives for creating multiple food & drink items with each crafting: each recipe now takes 1 ingredient and produces enough items for 4 writs, and you need 1 food and 1 drink for each writ, so it effectively take 1/4 of one ingredient and 1/4 of another ingredient for each writ), and you're getting back a recipe, some gold, and 20+ ingredients from it.

The RoI on alchemy writs isn't quite as good, but it's close (and for the same reasons: make sure you've got the max passive to make 4 potions at a time, and hang on to the excess potions for use in future writs). No recipes, of course, but you get significantly more reagents and solvents out of them than you put it, along with some gold and a chance to get a survey.

The RoI on enchanting writs is significantly worse than either of the other types of consumables writs, but still barely good enough to be worth doing IMO. The fact that there are no passives to allow you to squeeze 4 glyphs at a time from a single crafting is what really makes these writs less worth doing than provisioning or alchemy. The only reason I still consider them worth doing is because in the long run, when you factor in the surveys that you occasionally get, they get you soomewhat more than you put into them.
