PSA: Your money does not magically transform into something else on March 17th

Prior to March 17th: You pay money for a subscription to the game. You get access to all content, period. If you stop paying, you lose access to all content, period.

After March 17th: You pay money for a subscription to the game. You get access to all content, period. This content now comes with a bonus to XP. If you stop paying, you still have access to some content, keep any gear from lost content, and lose the XP bonus.

I don't fathom why people think that paying for a subscription is changing - it isn't. Its just getting better.

Some of us have been down this route before, with Swtor in my case, we get what's happening, but we've seen it before.

I will stay with the game and see what happens, but I was hoping this wasn't going to happen.

Yup, right there with you. I'll wait and see. 1.6 matters to me more than B2P right now. I played GW2, and loved it, but the content wasn't enough to keep me interested. ESO has an amazing base game, so regardless of B2P, if they keep their word about tons of amazing content, then I see no problem. Only time will tell.

we now know why all the content was labeled as "soon" Now our monthly sub gets us crowns to spend! WOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >_> dead game is dead once they start selling gear in the shop and charge you to run dungeons more than twice a day

Yep, seen it with LOTRO. While I agree with the OP, this option is not the "end of the world" - however I do want to point out, it does signal it. If after only a year this game is trying to figure out ways to generate more revenue, then you can bet when that isn't enough, they will start to offer "Loot Boxes" or X to get a "free badass X", then boosts to stats cause the F2P don't want to spend $15 a month, but will buy an XP boost, etc. I know from all the games I have played, this is a downward motion for this game. I am sad to say this, and my foot taste like ***, all you F2P naysayers....You were right.
Follow me if I advance, Kill me if I retreat, Avenge me if I die.

When this immediate evil power has been defeated, we shall not yet have won the long battle with the elemental barbarities. Another evil, it may be an invisible adversary, will attempt, again, and yet again, to destroy our frail civilization. Is it true, I wonder, that the only way to escape a war is to be in it?

If I die, you are forgiven, If I live, I will kill you.

Pretty much this. SWTOR did a lot of things right with their F2P model, but also did a bunch of things wrong. But one thing they did end up doing is proving that you can have a Subscription model coupled with a fluff shop and a yearly "expansion". This model seems less restrictive than that of SWTOR F2P, which could prove to be a positive thing here.

they will basically tweak the game for everybody who is not paying and try to make them pay. A lot of work during patch-cycles goes just into that, thinking of ways to make more people pay

So yes, all the content will be available to me. There just will be less content to begin with, as instead of developing it the devs now are wasting time trying to figure out ways to keep the game afloat, something they did not have to concern themselves with while they had a stable influx of cash from subscriptions.

If they still had a steady and adequate influx of cash from subscriptions they would have stayed subscription based.

Face the facts people, no one can create and maintain a AAA title and keep it subscription forever. Even WoW will acquiesce eventually. Only niche games with small dev staffs and rabidly loyal customers can keep subscriptions going (think Eve, Darkfall, Mortal Online?)

I don't disagree with you. Just pointing out that "nothing changes, everything is just the way it was" is not accurate.

They haven't done it to terribly bad there at SWTOR. My only concern is that they tend to make all cool stuff cash shop and seem to make the stuff you get in game ugly; but in SWTOR in terms of gear, it was ugly before the cash shop.

Why do people always bring up SWTOR and never DDO (Dungeons and Dragons Online) which went Hybrid (sub or F2P) in an almost IDENTICAL fashion to how ESO is going to, and DDO was very successful in implementation.

Only SWTOR's F2P was garb... Literally everything about the game was restricted. Even the number of bars you could put abilities on was put behind a pay wall.

They aren't restricting this game... Simply not giving you access to new content unless you pay. Which is how literally every game is. You either subscribe and get that content included in your subscription or you buy crowns and buy that content from the store.

They aren't pulling a SWTOR where unless you subscribe you can only have this many characters and you can only do this many skills and you can only run this many dungeons, etc...

WoW doesn't seem in imminent danger of going sub-free. FFXIV is also sub-only still (and also has a sub on console).

I think for a game that is not niche (i.e., a game other than EVE), it is hard to have a substantial subscriber base over the course of time because of WoW. WoW is the issue. People sub to WoW, no problem. Other games ... not so much.

EvE is not pay to play because it has got a rabidly loyal customers base.
EvE is pay to play because it's good.

This content now comes with a bonus to XP.

No it does not. The xp gain ill change. The increase will only be putting you back on par with what you were gaining pre 1.6/b2p.
