Is there anyone playing ESO for actual fun?

Browsing through the forums I read about character build this and farming mats that. Playing the game I get innundated with ads for trade guilds and people buying and selling items that dropped for free - and charging hundreds and thousands not just for items but apparently for "stacks" (100 of them? I don't really know).
-
I hear folks talk about how they had to rebuild their character or change class because he/she/it wasn't competitive or DPS'y or whatever "enough". People asking advice not to enjoy, but to find the "best build".

I've gone through shared dungeons (delves, instances, who knows what they are called now) where I had to literally run and occasionally sprint to keep up with the hasty players who were aggravated because "this location is taking too long".

What happened to actually enjoying? Exploring? Cracking jokes about why does the cliff racer look like an Archaeopteryx? Or why mudcrabs are so much smaller suddenly?

Just wondrin'
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

Most MMO's will have the set who must have the FOTM build, be super dps and grind, grind, grind to max level rather than experiencing the full scope of the game. Still that's how they get their enjoyment so I guess it comes down to whatever floats your boat.

Sometimes though I think it also comes down to having an overly competitive nature. Its a bit like the difference between those parents who will go play sport with their kids in the back yard, mess around and have fun and then those other parents who take their kids to junior football and yell at their 7 year old if they don't kick a goal :)

    I enjoy this game immensely.

And part of that enjoyment is making myself a better player. I enjoy the challenge of creating a viable build, tweaking it as I go, discovering which set bonuses work well for it, testing things out.

It's not about competing with anyone, at all. I'm only in competition with myself.

Honestly I feel like if more people cared about improving their playing skill and/or their character, then PUGs wouldn't be such an atrocious experience 75% of the time.

For me "a better player" is getting faster at making quippy comments while doing group stuff, and sending game-mail that is in character.

And depending on the character, someone stealing my sweet roll will lose their hand when I take it back.

This is about heroes, about surviving against terrible odds, about how each one of us can show that we can persevere and make a difference - my characters show my amazing skills and dedication to a true global unification of one Tamriel.

I have ... Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the Goblin City to take back the child that you have stolen. For my will is as strong as yours, and my kingdom is as great...

You think this is just about clicking keys repetitively on a keyboard in an obsessive fugue but it's not. This is LIFE. Honor, duty, loyalty, honing one's talents relentlessly day after day, hour after hour. Compared to playing my MMO, learning a new language or three would be child's play, if I cared to stop and do it. Why should I clean the house, do my homework, spend time with my family when I can be here - at the center of the heartbeat of existence?

And you ask if it's fun. Ha.

Sorry that your definition of what being a "better player" means is warped, then, I guess?

Being a better player means getting more effective at my class/role so that I can bring more to my groups. So that I'm not carried and we're not beating our faces against a brick wall when clearing content. It means getting stronger and overall better at what I do.

I'm playing ESO for fun, I guess everyone following my livestream or my videos know that.
I love wandering in the world and get myself immersed. I love doing group content and adventures in Cyrodiil, Craglorn or Dungeon withmy guild...and I also enjoy to do group content with random players.
I'm making my group myself (not using the tool) and 90´% of the time I'm having lot of fun with random players, even when we are wiping!

I'm not a min-maxer, but I like to face a challenge and overcome it. I like to be better and improve my skills. I also LOVE teamplay.

However, as soon as I need to "farm" something, which become a tedious task and not something fun anymore, I need a solid motivation which must related to the wellbeing of my group, and not just myself. Otherwise, feck it, I'm playing to enjoy myself and only doing what I'm in the mood at!

Everyone enjoys something different. Just because it doesn't sound fun to you doesn't mean it's not fun to someone out there. Some people like to make gold, some people like to be as effective as possible in combat, some people like to craft, some people like to role-play, some people like to quest, some people like to PVP, etc. The world(yes even Nirn) takes all kinds.

No ESO is not for fun. If one has not figured that out yet then it's time for leave.

ESO is race who will be the highest first. It is plain grinding all day long. It is your chore, your job that you must do daily. Your goal is to be faster, higher, better in all aspects of the game. There is no room for people who think it should be fun.

I've been playing since beta and I play primarily for fun.

Part of that fun is in the simple stuff - questing, just aimlessly meandering around picking up crafting items or finding that out of the way location at the edge of the map where some dev has put a little visual treat together for the few that find it.

But another part of that fun is the other stuff - maxing your level, making a build that kicks butt in PvP, running a trial or a vet dungeon and then doing it enough to get a time trial under your belt or even simply getting obscure and time consuming achievements.

But like anything worthwhile some of the latter things take a bit of effort, a bit of thought and a bit of time manage - time which not everyone has or wishes to devote to a computer game. Sometimes it can be frustrating when your build doesn't do what you expected or the game itself misbehaves or other players behave like *****s.

But don't ever kid yourself that people don't have fun here.

I play it exclusively for fun - I don't have time not to enjoy it.

Depends on where your fun is. Many people find fun in optimization and finding the best ways to be better, the fastest ways to earn gold, the fastest ways to earn mats, you know, facing a challenge.

If you just want to kick back & relax after a long day of work, you should find people who are like you and play with them, I know there are many, but 99% of the random people you'll find in game just want to clear things fast to get their reward and move on to something else instead of taking their time to listen to the story of a dungeon they've cleared 250 times already.

I understand where the OP is coming from.

Last weekend I ran my first dungeon, with another lower level and 2 vets. I was "supposed" to be the tank but when we got inside everyone was just flying through, not listening to dialogue etc. and just trying to get the thing finished. I spent most of my time catching up.

I get that the 2 vets were probably just trying to get it finished and didn't care about dialogue but i'm left with choosing between just skipping the story/dialogue or being "that guy" saying "Hey guys slow down!"

I used to be a min/maxer and a power gamer (other mmos). But, after buying a house, full-time job, wife I don't have the time nor the energy to play everyday for hours even though I would love to.

Even when I was a power gamer I never tried to rush people along or tell people their builds sucked etc. I don't think it's exclusive to ESO though, as most mmo's have their elitists and power gamers and then there "casuals" who want to take their time and enjoy the road.

But in respect to the OP's sentiments it'd be nice if the power gamers and min/maxers could learn to respect other people playstyles and be ok with waiting for people to read dialogue in dungeons or their build not being what they think it "should" be.

As others have said, everyone has their own idea of fun.

Keep in mind that many people enjoy dominating in PvP, or completing/trying to beat their previous times in end-game challenges like Trials or DSA. Likely the only reason they are running dungeons at all is to farm rare and powerful gear to help them do the things they want to do. They don't enjoy dungeon running, it is a necessary inconvenience. For some this also extends to anything involving quests and storylines, including Alliance zones.

I have found that guilds which emphasize helping members, completing basic content, and so on are more likely to have players who are willing to take the time to appreciate more of the game, or, even if they've done a particular piece of content 50 times, to allow members who are new to that content to enjoy it. Unless they've specifically said before hand that they are trying to get the speed completion achievement for a vet dungeon.

They're called guilds and in other games they're the social cohesion of the entire community, more or less, in ESO that is missing becuase guilds only reason for existence is as a lousy substitute for a real economy.

Thus, you're never (or very rarely) going to 'group up' with players who have interests other than getting whatever phat lewt this run will get, in the shortest time possible.

I think you're looking at this the wrong way. The way I see it:

    - Why should three random people adapt their play style and waste time just to make you feel better?
    - Why don't you let them know before the dungeon starts that you haven't done the quest and want to listen to it and take your time, thus at least giving them a choice to play with you and endure it or just find someone else? If you don't say so because you're afraid you'll be dismissed, then you're just deceiving those players.

I do agree though that saying to someone "your build sucks" is counter productive and it's best to give clues, but regarding the taking your time in dungeons, it's up to you to find people who will want to play like that or wait for you and not up to randoms to be forced to wait for you because you want to take your time.
