New Tutorial?

So at one point in one of the episodes of ESO Live, one of the devs mentioned a "New Player Tutorial." I don't know if this will be in 1.6 (I seem to remeber him saying it was), but I personally feel like this is really needed.

I did not get much out of the tutorial system in the game and I feel like a lot of stuff was not explained very well.

So, @ZOS_GinaBruno‌ @ZOS_JessicaFolsom‌ will we be getting a new player tutorial at some point? If so, when? If not what was he mentioning in that episode?

Thanks

Between the escape from Coldharbour and the starter islands, I don't really feel any other tutorial is needed. To me they taught me everything I needed to know to really get playing.

Having said that, I'm certainly not against the idea of a more detailed tutorial being available for those who need it. Hopefully new players won't be forced to do it, though, because I imagine that would turn some people off the game.

Yeah, you learn the basics plus you get to level 8 easily. Then when you do the first area, you leave level 15-17.

I started the game about two weeks ago, the tutorial area taught me more than enough, really. The crafts have their own tutorial quests when you pick them up. I don't see what else is necessary.

Good point here: the crafting tutorials (I assume you mean the tutorials that you do in order to be certified to complete crafting writs) are new, and have only been around since 1.5 (or was it 1.4?). I think they were handled very nicely, and that's probably the one tutorial-related thing that I wish had been in the game at launch, as it took me a little while and a little digging on the internet to really figure out all of the crafts.

There's no need for a _new_ tutorial, just go back to the way it was in the first open beta - slightly longer Coldharbour, obligatory starter islands but with the possibility to skip after the first quest, slower levelling, starting at level 2

IIRC there was a sequence just after you meet Lyris Titanborn, where you ran along some wooden bridges, before exiting in the open where you have the prophet's cell et al

I don't really see a need for the Coldharbour sequence to be longer, and I don't think that the starter islands need to be mandatory.

Having said that, it would be nice if you actually started on the starter islands, rather than having to follow quest markers to get to them when it's not necessarily obvious that you should be following those particular quest markers first, rather than other ones you might pick up in the city where you wake up. Start people on the starter islands when they wake up from Coldharbour, but let them take a boat to go elsewhere right away if they want to. They'll be missing out if they skip them, but that way it's more obvious that they probably shouldn't be skipping them, while still giving them the choice.

But if you started on the starter islands then you would have to play them to get to the first area. Not that I'm against the idea, I always play the starter islands anyway.

Not necessarily. You could have a boat available to take you to the first full zone right away if you chose to do so.

And I'm with you on that: I always play the starter islands too. I've played the starter islands on all 16 of my alts, and my VR characters do the starter islands for their new alliances too :D

Yeah, but just because I don't feel it's necessary, that doesn't mean that it's a bad idea to have a new one... As long as you can skip it if you want, anyway.

OP, what did you feel was left out of the current tutorial?

And more generally, I'm guessing that any new tutorial will have something to do with an updated storyline, etc. Eventually, we're going to have to move on from Malcolm McDowell's plot to take over the world.

One thing to consider.. Justice System. That may alter parts of the tutorial. Its why I have a character slot waiting for it.

Good point. The new tutorial mentioned may be geared primarily towards the newly added game elements. If so, then I would definitely consider it worthwhile.

Could be their braindead attempt with 1.5 to have you start in full armour... Thankfully they dropped that after the massive reactions it met on the PTS forum.

Starting in full armour? I didn't try the PTS when that was in the works... How did it work? Was it much different from being able to grab a full set of 0 gold armour / weapons from around the smithy as soon as you're out of Coldharbour?

Basically a sorcerer would always start out in a near-full set of light armour, a nightblade in a near-full set of medium, and a Templar in a near-full set of heavy, IIRC the only lacking was the pauldron and helmets.

All of the cuirasses and everything sitting around that you can pick up. They sometimes show up in containers too, and they're always scaled to your level (but always slightly inferior to crafted or dropped white pieces).

Yes, there will be some revisions to the existing tutorial in Coldharbour in Update 6. The goal is to make sure new players feel more comfortable and confident with their character after leaving Coldharbour. Some of the things we've touched on are basic combat skills which will be covered in more detail, you can try lockpicking to learn the mechanics, Lyris will guide you through more areas, and more.

I never left NOT in full armor. It may not match, but, when levelling, I usually run 2H, 2M, 3L on casters. (level up all them passives when it does not matter much so I can swap armor sets easy at VR levels.) My last run thru, I also left with a new personal record of 54 lockpicks.
