Silence - The PR Style that Rarely Works

I suspect ZOS staff members simply have more important things to do than react to every single one of the umpteen hundred almost identical wild rumor "pay attention to me" threads that get posted every day.

In the threads they do respond to, they often tell us they hear our concerns and will provide us more information when it is available. And they eventually do.

    This.

Silence is a great PR move when it's a response to absolutely inane posts. It isn't their job to respond to every trivial thread that some conspiracy nut posts in these forums. Their job is to tell us about what's actually happening with the game.

    Agreed.

They have communicated, but they made the mistake of not saying what people want to hear. Then again it does not matter what they say because they are going to PO someone or group. Either the hard core players or the casual players. Either the 'i have played every MMO out there' group, or the 'i just got to MMO's yesterday' group.
Silence is truly the only option we have left them with. They are apparently in a 'Just get 1.6 out there and we will deal with it then' mode.

Except this isn't an inane post by some conspiracy nut. This speculation is widespread and being editorialized on respectable and popular gaming websites.

I do agree with you that it's their job to tell us about what's actually happening with the game though. And that's exactly what we are asking them to do.

Seriously though, I do agree with both @Heruthema and @Jeremy - (Go figure, I want cake and sweetrolls). IF ZOS doesn't come out with something relative to the "major" concerns of the players, they are going to be losing valuable players. But that comment is going to be so scrutinized that I would be calling the president of the USA and asking for his press people to write it. Since they are going to be over a barrel either way, and since the track record really doesn't show them standing to it, we could all get at least one day of peace if they just came out and said:
    -
"No F2P, CP being redone, not adding children, VR levels gone and experience will be compensated for those levels.....that's the plan for today, tomorrow we are out of the office, but we will be back on Mon and we can start this conversation again." (Legal note: statements are good for 24 hours, we reserve the right to go back on everything we said at any time. BUT I assure you it won't be today)

Then at least we will be talking about something else.....for today.

(I don't mean to put anyone down for the opinions. While I do think that some of these are valid fights, I have noticed people with questions about things are getting bumped too fast to get answers (or as many answers) and I am not sure they should get bumped out so fast when they come to the forums for help. IMO)
Follow me if I advance, Kill me if I retreat, Avenge me if I die.

When this immediate evil power has been defeated, we shall not yet have won the long battle with the elemental barbarities. Another evil, it may be an invisible adversary, will attempt, again, and yet again, to destroy our frail civilization. Is it true, I wonder, that the only way to escape a war is to be in it?

If I die, you are forgiven, If I live, I will kill you.

I stick by what I've said previously about this kind of issue.
Are you unhappy with the game or the progress of the game?
Then make your SINGLE COMPLAINT/CONCERN and then unsubscribe to the game, problem solved. You no longer have to experience playing the game that has apparently for some reason become the bane of your existence, and you have also made your point clear to the company about how you are displeased with the game and their quality of information and service by ending your payment of their subscription.

As for the rest of you who are going to whine and moan constantly despite the fact that you are going to continue playing the game spitefully, I highly suggest you find yourself a river, build a bridge, and get over it.

Why the silence from ZOS? Probably because we have been threatening and browbeating them to the point where they have found comfort and safety in keeping quiet. When they were providing us with information that lead to negative opinions, it was way better than the silence we are receiving now. Despite the information they gave us was controversial, at least they were nice enough to open their mouths and give us a brief glimpse into the future, but instead of being grateful and thankful of that future glimpse in which they NEVER had to show us any of (they could have just kept their mouths shut the whole time and left all of the community guessing with a huge surprise upon release) we instead turn on them with some of the dumbest speculations and rumors I have ever seen! Then after punishing them by insulting them and yelling about the same issue over and over again in something like fifty plus threads, you then ask why they don't want to answer your whiny pissed off concerns?
Gee... I couldn't possibly ever imagine why ZOS would want to keep quiet about any of these issues... well it couldn't possibly be the player base that's scaring them, I mean we've obviously been SO forgiving about any minor mistakes or information leaks that ZOS has informed us about.

Come on guys, ZOS's job is not to *** us off out of their own enjoyment, they're trying to run a multimillion dollar company while simultaneously trying to please as many of us as they can possibly get away with, so they can keep that multimillion dollar company alive and prosperous. I doubt keeping a company like that alive has a code of conduct that says, "ZOS has the right to *** of as many players as possible whenever the opportunity should arise."
Relax you guys, enjoy the silence while it lasts and play your Alternate characters until Champion comes out, I'm almost positive that once 1.6 drops, ZOS is going to have a hard time keeping their mouths shut out of pure excitement from all the new material they are going to want to show off to us.

Well for starters I paid good money for this game. And as a paying customer: I believe I deserve to know the direction in which this game is headed.

It's the same as if I was investing in a company. I would feel like they owe it to me to let me know if they have any big changes planned for the future. Especially if there were already lots of rumors circulating about it.

They are going to sell this game to another big company...

Zenimax and Bethesda own the license to the Elder Scrolls series. Selling the Elder Scrolls Online MMO, without granting the company creation/manipulation rights of the lore and franchise as a whole would be pointless. What would a buyer do with the product?

Zenimax is privately funded, and doesn't suffer from the same investment problems as other publicly funded companies. I guess it would be more correct to say that investors are less likely to have a knee-jerk reaction like you see with other publicly traded companies.

The amount of money they make on Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Doom, and other titles is probably enough to help ESO keep going for at least a little bit longer.

Yeah... it might be costing them a lot, but the company has probably planned for that.

Selling the product is probably not high on their list of possibilities.

I'll agree that, for the most part, private investors will not make a knee jerk reaction.

However, if you take private equity money, you actually end up with more involvement. With a public company, you sell stock and have your capital to work with. Insiders have significant net worth tied up in it, and, you have to perform to keep your stock valuable for them and for any future offerings you want to make. With private equity, they will demand a spot at the table for most major decisions... and will get it.

I don't know what to say about the idea they would sell a limited license to their IP to another company. That would not produce enough money to repay their equity investors, most likely, which would leave them with no product and money owed to those parties.

I never said they are obligated to reveal their financial reports and direction they are taking. At least not legally.

What I said is I feel like I deserve an answer. And buying their game and paying a monthly subscription is the same as investing in them. So the concept is identical.

You're not an investor, you're a consumer... are we really going to have this discussion because if so, this will be the third time I've seen this point attempted to be made on these forums.
When you go out and purchase any game at all, do you also receive a set of charts and documents informing you of the company's direction and as to where the company is using your money towards what particular development? Do they hand you the phone numbers of the various board directors where you could call them and voice your concerns about the company's direction? Are you given a share of stocks within the company in which you hope to monitor and make commentary on in hopes to gain a profit from said investment? Are you walking into board meeting and participating in conference calls that are centered around increasing profits within the company?

As a consumer you purchased a service that is for the purpose of entertaining you as game player. The money you paid is to play the game. That's it. You as a consumer are paying ZOS to provide you with a game for so long as you pay for their service regularly. That service does not include them needing to provide you with anything outside of that service. They don't need to tell you anything about what direction they are taking the game nor do they need to inform you about any of the businesses inner workings.

It's the same as if I was investing in a company. I would feel like they owe it to me to let me know if they have any big changes planned for the future. Especially if there were already lots of rumors circulating about it.

Call it a courtesy and treating your customers with respect and not purposely leaving them in the dark about something that concerns them.

Semantics. You can be a consumer and an investor at the same time. And I said the concepts were identical. Obviously I invested both time and money into the game.

Anyway: rather you think the word invest is appropriate or not is beside the point. And like the previous poster did - you are trying to debate something I never said. Never did I suggest they need to tell me what direction they are taking the game and are legally bound to inform me about their inner business workings.

But just because you are not legally bound to do something doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. Like I've said twice now: it's about being respectful to your customers and keeping them in the know about important decisions they plan on making instead of leaving them in the dark to have to speculate about it amidst growing rumors.

Plus might I add we get updates. They're called The Road Ahead and ESO Live.

We get plenty of things from Zeni and people are still not happy? How did this become so hated by the internet? I really can't remember seeing this level of unjustified hatred for a game

I'm not hating on the game. I would just like an answer as to rather or not they have plans to go F2P as is being reported.

@Rezzy64 - this road is not going to work. It has been stated, by me and others, if we are "consumers", we have the right to return said product if it does not deliver under pretense of what we thought we were getting when we bought it. Soooo, we ordered a working game that would have updates every 6 weeks, wouldn't boot us or crash, wouldn't lag or have broken quests....the list could go on. Either way you slice it: ZOS says "This is what you get" and we "purchase" that. Come to find out it is not that. So we??????

Just remember this little thing: You meet the guy/gal of your dreams who lures back to your room and fulfills your wildest fantasy. While you are asleep, they hit the wallet/purse and clean you out. You wake up and notice. You either:
    A) Smile and say "F*** it, it was worth it"
    B) You call the cops and say "I was robbed."

FACT: Either choice does not change what happened, you were robbed. Just cause you are okay with it doesn't mean someone else is. That fact is not changed based on personal feelings or thoughts. These posts are expressing just that, how someone "feels" about what is happening, or what they "think" is happening.

I could take this farther, but just cause one person enjoyed the above example and they argue with me, or others, to justify it and try and make me believe it was okay, will not make me okay with it.

On a serious note, thanks for keeping it interesting.

I'm not saying everything on the internet is true. What I'm saying is ZOS should just let us know rather it is or not.

A simple official post saying we aren't going F2P or we are going F2P. That's not too much to ask and it baffles me why so many on this forum seem to think it is.

I can't possibly make this point any more clear at this point.
No company has to ever be respectful just because a customer demands it, especially when it is at the cost of the reputation or the progress within the business.
Respectfulness encourages business by increasing morale within and outside of the company, if a business chooses to not respect their customers, they run the risk of losing their customers.
I return once again to the fact that, if you believe they aren't respecting you, then put them in their place by ending your subscription and never returning, I'm pretty sure that will teach them the lesson they need.
As long as you keep paying them to be disrespectful to you as you so seem to put it, then they have no obligation what so ever to respect you because you are choosing to continuously pay them.

You are not an investor and ZOS has no formal reason for having to respect you in any fashion. If you want to be respected then put your money where your mouth is, which is apparently not an ESO subscription.

Have you seen The Simpsons before? I'm guessing probably. Have you ever seen an episode where they're driving in the car and Bart and Lisa are going "Are we there yet??" Over and over and over endlessly. All the while Homer repeating "No" over and over.

Replace "Are we there yet??" With "Is this game going free to play yet??" and that's exactly how these boards and the internet have been about this game since before launch, and they have repeatedly said no and people will not listen and continue on with "Is this game going free to play yet??"

You keep trying to debate this non-issue about what they are obligated to do. I already addressed that.

Also: I'm not trying to teach them any lessons. I'm not going to cancel my subscription over this either. What I'm saying is I would appreciate an official response from them about this topic. I feel as a paying customer who has invested/spent quite a bit of money on their product that isn't too much to ask.

I take your point but I don't think it's quite the same.

It's true when this game first launched there were people saying it would go F2P. But that was mostly just trolling by people who didn't like the game and were taking shots.

This is different. These are legitimate concerns and questions based off reporting and recent actions done by ZOS. So I think it warrants a response and isn't just mindless trolling about F2P they should ignore. These are people who actually care about the game and just want to know what's happening.
