New Player - Would Like Any Insight To Make My Experience Better

Hello ESO Community,

Today after much thought i decided why not i will buy ESO and try it for the 30 days and sub if i enjoy myself, i have looked at reviews and saw a mixed bag to say the least- people mentioning bugs and other things. I'm not new to MMOS, i have played WoW and SWTOR i also played Skyrim so i will have a feel for the game at least.

What i want to know is what should i be doing to get started? Find players & Guilds instantly? Try to make loads of gold? Anything else?

I am hoping this community is better then Wows and actually helps and communicates and i look forward to any tips anyone has!

Many Thanks

    Hail and well met!

I think enjoying the story and figuring out the game should be your first priority.

Finding a good guild will heighten your experience if you like grouping or just generally chatting with folks and would like help with mechanics and such.

There are a number of different guilds out there, from Social to Raid to Trading to PvP, so figure out what you would like. You can join up to 5 guilds in game, so you can try a few out and if you don't like them, find another one.

Many guilds advertise in zone chat, some will randomly send guild invites to players and some invite people on a case-by-case basis (ie, you grouped with some of them for a dungeon and they liked you).

Making a lot of gold is not really a priority early in game (and would not be very easy). Though saving for a horse if you don't have the Imperial edition may be a good idea. Keep in mind that the only thing you need to buy from NPC vendors are a few empty soul gems. You can craft or loot armor and weapons, make food, potions, glyphs etc.

If you are interested in Crafting, have a look at the crafting dailies. They should help you with leveling. Though for Enchanting, Blacksmithing, Clothing and Woodworking, one of the best ways to level is deconstructing items made by another player.

I think these are pretty much the starter basics. If you have any more detailed questions, just let us know!

(Also, what server/faction are you on?)

    Enjoy the game!

Finding a guild or two is certainly a good idea.
Save up for the mount (if you buy Standard Edition, that is), especially if you're going to PvP.
I'd also recommend reading general info about races/classes/weapon before creating a character, it could save you much headache and gold in the long run :) (probably all people do that, but I didn't, and my first 20ish lvls were one big WTF)

First of all, welcome to ESO! The in-game community is generally quite friendly so I would suggest turning zone chat on and which is something you probably are conditioned to shut off from other MMOs. Yes there might be a few trolls, but the majority will be helpful and provide good advice. Also, the LFG system is wonky right now, so zone chat is the best way to find groups and other help.

It's good to join trade guilds so you can have access to a guild store where you can sell things to other players. A good way to earn money as a new player is to gather crafting mats you find as you explore such as ores for blacksmithing, plants like jute for clothing, leathers from critters such as wolves and mudcrabs or wood for woodworking. The raw crafting mats are quite valuable and players will pay a good amount for them.

You can join up to 5 guilds at a time, so there's no reason to wait in joining at least 1 or 2 guilds early on. A huge perk from making in-game friends and joining guilds is that you can click on a guildie or friend and travel to them for free. This will send you to the nearest wayshrine to your friend and you won't have to pay wayshrine gold fees! Knowing that alone, will save you a ton of gold.

Try all the classes to about level 15 each. Then decide which one you like the best. I wish I had done that. Because this game does not make leveling alts very easy at all.

Take your time, enjoy the world, the quests and the story. Savor it, don't rush through it. The story and environment is really well executed, and sometimes the in-game world tells as much story as does the quests and lore within.

The difference in experiencing and rushing through it as the difference in having a good time and an amazing one.

    Welcome to ESO. :)

Whatever you do, I'm sure you'll have a great time. The game is very nice, and even if some bugs can be frustrating at times at endgame, everything is still very enjoyable.

    A few tips:
    - Spend some time in character creation, create a character that you will want to spend hundred (thousands?) of hours with. Beware of the "character height" scale and select something appropriate, you don't want a hobbit-dunmer like me! :disagree:
    - Pick your race according to how you play but don't focus too much on it, other than for a RP part. For example, if you want to become a mage-like character with staves, being an Altmer, a Dunmer or a Breton won't make much of a difference. Another race more focused on stamina like Imperials can still make very good mages.
    - Listen to the stories and enjoy the quests.
    - When you start your adventure, do the lvl3 quest in the starting city then move to the low level islands for lvl3-8 content.
    - Start crafting early if you want to have it on your characters. There are 6 professions (blacksmithing, clothing, woodworking, alchemy, provisioning and enchanting) and I suggest you use at least 2 characters, each specialized in 3 jobs if you want everything. 6 crafts on 1 character will impair your progress, as crafting requires quite a few skillpoints.

Thanks for the posts guys, boy where do i begin? haha

To start im trying to install the game and after 2-3 hours im on 10%, not gonna bash the game because of that i can let it download and do other things anyways!

From what i am understanding being in a guild is very useful comparing to what the guilds in WoW are like, whilst grouping with other players to achieve harder task.

Once i am in i will have a careful look when creating myself, are height and weight very important in deciding factors?

Server wise is it just one big server or do i choose?

    Thanks

Try all the classes to about level 15 each. Then decide which one you like the best. I wish I had done that. Because this game does not make leveling alts very easy at all.

I'd perhaps say level 30, the real fun (in my opinion) comes once you're past the drag of just being able to use one weapon. Then you get a bit more insight into the classes and which two weapon setups work great.

So what are the weapon set ups like? did they keep it like Skyrim where you can pick up any old weapon and Shield ? or when you great yourself do you have to set what you want to be e.g. Sword & Shield or Two Handed Only?

You get the ability to use a second weapon at Lv15 though.

Any class can use any weapon. The weapon skill lines are:

    Two-Handed (axes, mauls)
One Hand and Shield (the "one hand" can be any one-handed weapon)
    Bow
Dual wield (you can use any one-handed weapon or combination thereof - dagger, 1h-sword, axe, mace)
Destruction Staff (fire, ice or lightning)
    Restoration staff

Each weapon has 5 active skills and a number of passives. You can play around with different weapons and see what you like. I am currently working on maxing out all weapon skill lines on my main, just to be able to switch to whatever is needed.

Each class has three unique skill lines, each with an Ultimate ability, 5 active skills and a number of passives.

There are three kinds of armor (light, medium and heavy), which can be used in combination. Each kind has a number of passives and an active ability.

There are some other skill lines (guild, world, alliance war, crafting). Apart from the Class Skills, any character can access any of the skill lines.

Every class has three exclusive spell trees, beyond that all skills are available to everyone and you can start using them at any time. Weapons and armors aren't class-bound.
At level 15 you'll unlock weapon swap, so you'll have access to two different setups at all times (but you can train more if you want, you'll just have to switch skills manually).

You can join five player guilds, make sure at least one of them is a trading guild. There's no global auction house, so if you want to buy or sell you can do it only in guilds (some have traders available even to non-members) or zone chat.

Take up crafting. Researching traits is a large time investment, so start as soon as possible.

As for character creation, your character's appearance is purely cosmetic, so no, height and weight aren't important (except for your good looks ;)).

There is also the aspect of if you equip too much of a stat the game will tell you if you are overcharged.

So for me instead of adding more heavy armor and getting less armor then I would I can equip different types of armor once I hit the point where I overcharge or just under it and open up passives of the other armor type tree that are beneficial to the role I am playing.

This is so much more configurable then WOW is in it's current state.

If you think that you want to play the game after the next few days Steam is having a sale. You can get the Imperial Edition that comes with some items and the ability to get a horse for 1 gold piece (there is no copper or silver in ESO) for $30.39. After that it is most likely going to be back at $80.00]

    Edit:fixed typo

Yeah, don't worry... it really takes a long time. In my case, the initial download of all the game took 28hs total :|

If you're in EU, be prepared for launcher troubles. Recently ZOS seems to always mess something up, it's almost amusing. :p
But yeah, downloads take a while. Don't let it discourage you! You're going to have fun when you finally get into the game, the levelling experience before 50 is particularly enjoyable.

@OP. I tell this to all new players to boost their enjoyment.

    1. Forget all other MMOs and learn to be a noob again. Everything you did in those wont help you.

    2. Forget Skyrim. This is not Skyrim online and expecting such is a recipe for failure.

    3. Don't rush. Rushing ruins the world and most of the fun. Take your time and enjoy the game itself.

Do those 3 things and you'll not enjoy the game hardly at all.

My advice would be to ignore the progress bar - it downloads from 0% to 30%, then updates/installs files, which takes you to 60%. It then downloads more files and installs them which takes you to 100%.

Long story short - getting to 30% on the progress bar can take 5 hours on a slow download speed, but getting from 30% to 60% will only take another 20 minutes. It's not a precise breakdown of how long it will actually take, so just try to ignore it and find something else to do while you are waiting!

Try pausing the download then un pausing it. I don't know why but ESO download sometimes just stops when you let it idle. I just installed ESO on my new computer a week or so ago. It also downloads than "applies" download. Once it starts applying download it goes much quicker.
