Why exactly does the PTS take a whole day to download?

Hi,
I thought I'll give the PTS a chance, so I started to install today at about 1 p.m. Now it's past 10 in the evening (I'm in Germany), and it's not even close to be done.

I use to download the big stuff when I'm not at home or sleeping (so when I don't need the computer), so when I came back now, I saw it was at only 86% progress.

My internet speed is perfectly fine, so the thoughts came up that iit must be server related. Soooo.. I'm not surprised about that stuttering in the game (which is getting worse and worse, still). I'm sure it's not the exact same server like the "normal" game is on, but it's still an ESO server.

The progress only seems to move like normal when I frequently pause and continue the download, but to be honest, that's not how I want to spend my time.
Well, now it's done, after I "pushed it forward" again it was able to finish.

I mean, this is not a f2p game, so I expect a bit more speed, to be honest.

Any ideas?

    It is the same size as the regular game, so that is what, 30GB or so? That can take some time to download, even on a fast connection. It takes me about about 2 hours in the NA to download a 4 to 5GB patch, so that would be about 12 hours to get a 30GB download. It is faster since my company went to 30Mb.

    I have noticed that downloads are much faster late at night and early in the morning than at prime time. Prime time is about 3 in the after noon to 11PM at night. Then the whole internet is slower. And, your pretty much downloading this during prime time.

    I will leave the launcher up during patch days and set my computer to not got to sleep so the patches download faster, or are at least ready when I get home from work.

    One other thing to keep in mind, is if your playing the regular game on PTS update days, that update download can cause issues with the Live game. So, on those days, it might be best to kill the launcher once the game is up before you log in. You did not ask about this last part, just something you will notice having the PTS on your machine now.

    A lot more than 30GB now, more like 50GB+.
    Also be aware that you cannot copy a char from the Euro server to the PTS, you can only do that from the NA server.
    Being First is not the prize, it just mean's everyone can stab you in the back.

    Is it that big now? :o I have not checked the install size in a while.

    As for the character copy, I think that is something that ZOS does in a batch. I don't think I can copy a character over on my own volition, but I have not tried. I don't think they have been able to do that on the EU server for some reason. They did this about 3 weeks ago for NA.

    Thanks for your reply. Well, the thing is, the "normal" game took me about 2 hours to install back then, my internet speed is at 16MB, so was wondering why this is different. Both installations I ran at about that time.

    And it does run in normal speed when I push it every now and then pause and continue which is kinda odd, I think (like as if I have to wake up the server).

    I also kill the launcher everytime I run the game, I got used to do that after that memory leak issue^^

    But yeah, next time I'll try to do that at night times, maybe it really has a chance to be faster then, thanks for the advice :)

    They probably dedicated more download servers back at launch to cover the rush. It seems to me that the game downloaded the first time rather quickly for me too.
    It could be that the PTS does not have the same size pipe allocated to it, not sure. As I said above, I set my downloads at times that I don't have to sit around and wait for them, as that would bug me to no end. Watching paint dry is not my favorite activity.... :)

    @Nestor That's what I did, I ran the installation while I was away ;) Unfortunately, still at prime time, so it took about 9 1/2 hours, though (wasn't done when I came back)^^
    But I remember last time when I installed the normal game which took about 2 hours, I was even in a Skype call which didn't slow it down either (and also at prime time). So I guess you could be right about the size pipe allocation of the PTS.
