Maybe it's not you, maybe it's me but I expected so much more from our relationship but over the past 6 months and you just haven't matured as I hoped you would. Oh, I know you're making promises, but given all the past promises you've failed to deliver on I'd be twice the fool if I fell for them. If you want me back here are some things that have to change...
Why do monsters follow me for hundreds of yards only to attack me once then retreat with 100% immunity to my attacks? Seriously, if they're that desperate to play "Tag, You're It!" I should at least be able to tag them back. Or is this some perverse form of "No Backsies" that I'm not aware of? Seriously getting tired of this -- it's the first item in the "real old, real fast" pile.
As a subsection to that question why are crocodiles able to keep pace with me unless I'm sprinting? It seems there isn't any monster that I can out run unless I'm burning stamina. Hoarvars, crocodiles, ogrim, you name it no matter how much they look like slow lumbering beast they all match me step for step unless I press and hold 'Alt'. Hell, I wouldn't be shocked if Stranglers got modded to chase me down at this rate. Why should I be able to run away from a plant rooted in the ground? By ESO standards that makes no sense at all!
Why does nearly every Tom, ***, and Harry with a sword and board posses the skill level 38 dual wield ability "Hidden Blade" and use it in every encounter just before I can kill them? I start seeing this "fun" encounter dynamic with level 6 or so monsters. How is that possible? Note that with a solo encounter it's not a problem as I can usually keep the monster off balance, etc. but with pairs or threesomes I'm all but guaranteed to be bleeding and hobbled for several seconds after the encounter ends. Add this to the pile of "it gets real old, real fast."
Can we talk about the way you limit me to 8 character slots? I get you don't want me having 27 toons getting deliveries from hirelings but how hard would it be to cap the number of hirelings to an account limit while giving me more slots? And maybe only add one slot a month or something as a reward for loyalty? But I can't even have one toon of each race let alone gender. In every other Elder Scrolls game playing thru 20 times (once for each race and gender) was my bare minimum. But with the cost and time of training up crafting, bag slots, and even my horse there's no way I'm deleting one my veteran toons to play another at this point. More slots, it's not that hard to do.
Why is there no truly co-operative play? Sure, you force us to band together for survival with monsters 10X's more powerful than Molag Bal but you don't reward us for it. After spending an hour grinding thru one of those challenge delves what do we get for it? A piece of blue gear we'll just deconstruct for the Turpen or Dwarven Oil? Hell, just give me a couple of Dwarven Oils instead. Why can't we get reward with finding better loot by banding together or some kind of positive re-enforcement to encourage group play. "Band together or die!" might make an OK tag line for a schlocky summer movie but for weeks of playing it too ends up in the "it get real old, real fast" pile.
And why is every quest objective always the same? Oh, sure, you've got some "hunt for X ingredient" quests that are poorly implemented but why in a world as large as Tamriel do I always have to go to the same 3 places in succession when I play thru a quest on another toon. Variety, they say, is the spice of life and you're about as spicy as a vanilla milkshake. I know you don't want to be compared to your predecessors but Skyrim's Radiant Story mechanic could help replay value a lot. Can you please consider asking your older sibling for some advice? Can you sense the pattern here? Yeah, RORF.
Why do my summoned creatures and armor vanish when I cross many zone boundaries? I suppose if fighters had to put part of their armor on every time they entered a new zone I'd call it equal but losing 500 hundreds of points of protection just for walking into a dungeon seems like a major eff up on your part. It's not like having to remount my horse after I enter Stormhaven or Eastmarch. Or having to unsheathe my weapon when I leave a dungeon or talk to some NPC. It means I have to cast one or more spells. And combined with the bug of losing magicka for entering a zone I can actually be completely drained of my primary resource just to restore my "permanent" spells and have to twiddle my thumbs and waste not only my time but my group's time as well waiting for my magicka to recover. Again -- another one for the RORF pile.
Why do the Companions have the collective combat ability of a cold bowl of limp spaghetti noodles? I watched from the shadows as three of them fought a single wraith for 10 minutes in Sancre Tor and were unable to kill it. I finally took pity and killed it with a single shot just to put it out of its misery. If the story is to be believed at one time they were collectively able to put an Emperor on the throne of Cyrodiil. Now they can't dispatch an incidental level 1 spider without my help. How the mighty have fallen. I guess my hero really is "the brightest of five stars" but considering the other four are as bright as twice used matches that isn't saying much.
Speaking of incidental spiders -- when I'm in a battle fighting for my life against three opponents matched to my level why in the name of Akatosh do you think targeting the damn rat, spider, or wasp that happens to wander into the combat area is appropriate? When I'm in "combat mode" I don't give a flying frack about gathering bait. I'm fighting for my life -- not a slim to none chance at catching a trophy fish in the next zone. Please, stop targeting the random bait until combat is over.
Why are there so many monsters in the game apparently immune to bleed damage but Fire Atronachs are still easy to kill with fire spells? Or Storm Atronachs readily damaged by lightning? And why can I poison a Dwarven Sphere? Or give zombies some fatal disease?
Why do I not get skill advancement for my Shadow skill line when I sneak past enemies while cloaked? Or escape from the battle when I use Path of Darkness to beat a hasty retreat? It seems to me that I'm only rewarded for being a bad thief and getting sucked into combat rather than being a good thief and going by unnoticed or escaping from them.
And healing outside of combat is still healing. If I can die from environmental damage like falling I should get experience for healing it. Just because there isn't some monster desperately trying to play "Kissy Face" with me or my group doesn't mean I'm not healing damage to myself or them. Maybe toons get experience for this but if they do it must be miniscule.
Speaking of useless things -- Snakeblood. Really? Why in Zenithar's name is there a crafting skill with 3 -- THREE! -- skill slots for no real uses? Is this some left over bit of forgotten lore from Beta days that's still lingering in the code? This isn't enough to end our relationship but it is one piece of a long list of stuff that seems half-baked or unpolished. For example, the combat at the end of Bangkorai with its multiple waves of a dozen ghost soldiers in a solo encounter -- where I don't heal while resting -- comes to mind. Having to use tricks like getting them to disengage from combat by swimming in the water feels so sleazy. Surely that can't be the intended game play? My guess is this was going to be something like the battle with Sinmur at the end of the Rift but the equivalent to the shards of Wuuthrad was cut at the last minute. And why don't more werewolf and vampire NPCs recognize me as such? I can think of exactly one werewolf NPC encounter that acknowledged me as a kindred spirit.
The fact that I can't (without an add on) sort the items in a guild store alphabetically is laughable. No, not laughable -- sad and pathetic. If I want to look for a specific blue food recipe I have to manually scan for it among 283 recipes only to find nobody offers it. Is this because you're having trouble sorting alphabetically in non-English language versions? I ask because it's not a trivial problem, things like sorting with accent/diacritical marks/etc. can be tricky. Is that why we don't have the feature?
Two words -- mini map. 'Nuff said.
And, all together now, why do I care for the 379th time that "Your guild mates have completed some random event in Craglorn with a time of 287m 13s 302us"? I mean I guess if they had gotten on the leader board it would be worth getting notified about it. Maybe. But every single time it gets completed I have to hear about it and manually dismiss the notification? Yeah, definitely RORF.
If you actually deal with most, or hopefully all, of these problems I'll be back to renew my subscription after it runs out in November. If not I'll always remember the time we spent together. Some parts of it were truly magical.
Signed,
Hopeful.
