In Disguise, What!

Hi

I'm Veteran level 9 and I'm in the Rift, but I've had this since the start.
You get a quest that tells you to put on a disguise and infiltrate an area.

Right now I'm working on "Scout the Mine".

I head in and enemy NPCs 30 feet away run up and attack me.
The disguise disappears and I have to kill half a dozen bad guys to fined another.

As soon as I put it on and start moving everyone attacks me again.
I end up giving up on it and just fighting my was through the whole area.

Some times the goal is right near several guards, when I can't get within 30 feet of anyone.

Why doesn't the disguise work?
What's the point of these quest?

Are you walking past people holding torches? Torch barers can detect you even in disguise and once they do near by enemies will become aggro.

If there is a "Sentry" nearby, he can see through your disguise. Avoid them as if you were not disguised.

VR9 and you don't know how disguises work?
Yeah you 'played' the game well. What was it, a group teleport to Craglorn at level 3? :p
Being First is not the prize, it just mean's everyone can stab you in the back.

    Lol, a bit harsh Sindala.

I know plenty of vets (including myself) that were only discussing the other day having played the game since day 1 we are still being amazed at the odd and sometimes stupid things (like the above) that we missed, and the fact we are still learning new things every day.

I've played through the same quest lines with alts only to find out new things that either I didn't take in the first time, or perhaps I was delirious from a lack of sleep playing 20 hours straight (I did that at game release more than one...) and didn't pick up on what is a fundamental or a basic mechanic.

It's a valid question, and you only learn from asking questions. And if he hadn't played the game well, he'd be at Craglorn getting his VR14 on, you know the ones I mean, the VR14's in PvP with about 100 skill points in total.

Been here since Feb 2014 - You'd think I'd be half reasonable at this game by now...

At that point I think it starts to be almost too late already. Most simpliest is to target the enemies. Ones that will see you have red highlight, ones that are oblivious are green/yellow highlight.

I think the first disguise-involving quest explained how they work.

I never wear them anyway, they're rarely required to finish the quest and I prefer plowing through the enemies to sneaking around torches and dogs.

I would like the disguises and sneaking around aspect better IF you actually got something for it. Unfortunately, in most quests, you are just depriving yourself of XP if you SUCCESSFULLY use the disguises. So why bother? At the least you should get additional XP if you manage to complete the quest WITHOUT having your disguise destroyed and it should be comparable to what you'd get for just plowing through the enemies.

This. Using disguises is often actually detrimental, because it bears the danger of losing the disguise permanently if you are discovered, and after you complete objective there is often no chance to get this particular disguise again. If you want to keep the disguise for later, you better stash it away until you are safely away from the quest zone... Actually, thinking of it, completing the quest in "stealth mode" could be the perfect requirement for being rewarded with the permanent disguises as a keepsake.

Also, I always found it weird that I couldn't sneak at all in disguises because "it would be suspicious". But why does being suspicious even concern me when the sentry would see through my disguise anyway? The natural way to go about this would have been "you can sneak normally, but if anyone (including normal mobs) sees you sneaking, you are discovered as usual.

Case in point....I had 50 recipes sitting in my bag taking up all the space as Never having any interest in provisioning (kept for later)...I never new I had to double click them to "know" them and get rid of them.
    lol.
Ok I was at level 30 something at the time but you get the gist.
Inventory management became much easier lol

Disguises are absolutely worthless in this game. With any quest that tries to make me wear one, I learned pretty quick to not bother and just go in and either sneak or just start killing any mobs in the way. And regular old sneaking is almost always way more effective than any disguise.

I take off the disguise when I am heading towards hostile NPCs and put it back when heading towards calmed NPCs.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

    Hi

After reading these I went in and experimented, I had kind of ignored the disguise thing because I need the points I get in combat anyway.

In spite of having destinations installed, and making sure that I do every single thing that I can, (most of my maps have no black icons on them) all dungeons bosses if I can find help, etc, I have a lot of trouble trying to keep my level at the appropriate number.

I'm in the Rift and just got to level 9 and it's been this way most of the way through. I will probably hit 10 about the time I'm ready to move on to the level 11 area.

I don't know how people are staying up with the level of the area they are in.

But when I really looked I discovered for the first time that even though most of the NPCs are green, there are ones that are red ones scattered around.

The thing is that using stealth is just as easy as using the disguise.
I have a dozen of them in the bank since I always leave the area with one.

Anyway I think I see now that I was just trying to walk around thinking that I'm in disguise no one should notice me, and it doesn't work that way.

Now if I could just figure a way to gain a little on my lever so I could eventually catch up, that would be great.

    Hi Mike,

Throughout most of the game I from 1-50 I found that I outlevelled quests pretty quickly. In Veteran Ranks it seems to be around the other way a bit. Doing all of the quests won't necessarily keep you on par with the quest levels. It's unfortunate that stealth doesn't offer any experience gain as it does bring diversity to game play, but for now give it a miss. Kill everything in sight, then when all of the quests in an area are done, even if not a crafter yourself go do some node harvesting and kill everything on the way (sell your goods if you don't want them). I am VR6 completing VR7 quests and finding it not too bad.

    Cheers

Meh... I only use disguises on my low level characters to avoid fighting and getting that extra xp since I usually end up over leveled at one point or another. Also once I become over leveled to avoid pointless fighting where I get no xp and no loot.

I like to keep disguises too, so I always take my first one when I start the quest and stop long enough to bank it, then I can get another from a downed enemy or backpack during the quest. Now, that's a habit but I don't think it works with the Servant's Disguise (I think you only get one of those). And I liked the Servant's diguise so much I had an alt go get one for my main, after my main lost his. My main always wears the Servant's Disguise.
