Brand New to Elder Scrolls Online...

Fluffbuff
Fluffbuff
TL;DR: Game is terribly optimized leading to the same crappy frames, no matter what you turn your settings on.. When you change settings or enter the game.. I am greeted with a 10 minute long load screen.

Hey guys, fluffbuff here and I just bought this game today. I am not happy with this game as I have had so many issues with it. Now I'm not a person who hates the Elder Scrolls games, I adore them. What I have seen of this game is terrible and I am not happy. So I started off, created my character and thought "Oh man, this is gonna be awesome. I might actually replace World of Warcraft with this." Then I started to play the game and experience some of the game breaking issues.

First let me tell you this.. Sitting at a loading screen for 10+ minutes is not fun. I'll get back to this later. So I tried to adjust my settings cause the game is running poorly on my PC, which can easily run Skyrim on Max settings. Every time I would change the settings, I would have to wait through the 10 minutes of load screen.. Man let me tell you.. Best moment of my life.

When the game does load, I noticed something strange.. I mean.. Odd.. No matter what settings I seem to play on.. I get the same exact frame rates.. I'm talking about 27FPS-40-FPS and I asked if other people were having the same problems. They only responded with "FPS varies by how many people are on" and don't get me wrong, I could see that but I have a graphics card with 2gb GDDR5 video memory and should not be seeing that.

I love MMORPG's and I love the elder scrolls series, but this game is something else. I love the idea of it, hate the execution of it. Thanks for your time guys,

fluff buff these are problems that are on ZOS's side. the very things you have described have been going on since the game launched and seem to have only gotten worse. at first only some people were affected now it has multiplied. I would contact customer support for a refund asap before you log in to much play time and they deny you.

Could I do that since I purchased the game elsewhere?

Zen has suggested in other threads running as administrator and turning off accelerated graphics in your web browser. This has helped some for me. Turning your shadow options down helps too.
Another thing you can try is in your documents folder on your computer there is an Elder Scrolls Online folder, in that is a folder called live click that, then go to user settings. You will see an option called SET MIP_LOAD_SKIP_LEVELS "0", make sure it is "0". (At -3 the game looks kick ass though, lag-ish, but kickass.) Hope this helps you. It's not a cure all, that is going to have to happen on Zen's end I think.

I had capped FPS in the beginning (or so it seemed). Turning off Vsync fixed that.
Please stop making requests for game features. ZOS have enough bad ideas as it is!

Like I said, I really wanted to like this game. The idea was great, the thought of the idea was great but it had terrible execution. I think my first day was my last day. I can't play at 27 FPS.. Also, my card is a Nvidia Gefore 750m 2gb GDDR5. The card runs skyrim on max and that game has better graphics..

Are on a Laptop, or why do you have a mobile GPU? If yes, what hard disk does it have? SSD? 7200 or 5400 RPM HDD?

You can't compare single-player Skyrim to MMO ESO, because the former's graphics engine never has to wait for any network connection in order to know what and how many mobile objects it will have to display. So yes, frame rates (and loading times) rather depend on the quality (less on quantity) of your subscriber line. Dropped packets somewhere down the line will impact the client's performance. The only thing you could do is getting off of WiFi if you are, and try to see whether your problems persist if you directly connect to the router with a network cable.

Yes I am on a laptop and for my hard disk, I have a ATA WDC WD7500BPKX-7. I'm still trying to figure out what SSD I have. I know my internet is fine because I play WoW without lag. Not very demanding but I have 20 Latency, 40MBPS/down 10MBPS/up.

-Edit- I'm not comparing it to WoW, I'm just saying that it shouldn't take 10 minutes on the loading screen. I just wish this was better.

You might be having packet loss problems or bottlenecking somewhere then.

I am running a Pocket loss test right now. Seeing if anything comes up, will update with info.

Well, this test uses ICMP, a different animal from TCP, which the ESO client-server connection uses. But nevertheless it shows packet losses for a host in Level 3's network. Level 3 is ZOS's data center ISP. For this test to be more conclusive, it should be repeated on different days at different times, especially prime time would be most interesting. Prime time will most likely enclose more than one time zone, not just yours.

A most interesting read by Level 3's Mark Taylor states that the poor peering (i.e. data exchange) between the major tier 1 and 2 internet carriers often leads to saturated router ports, which is often the cause of packet losses. For a TCP connection, this leads to higher latencies, as missing packets need to be resend.

Nor does it for 99% of players, otherwise you'd see the forums dominated by such complaints. There's clearly a problem at your end. I know from other games' forums over many years how difficult it is to get past the "everything else works ok so it can't be my setup" reaction, but the fact is that different games have different requirements, and they produce different compatibility issues.

Are you using a wired or wireless internet connection? If it isn't a problem with your internet connection (and you should check your ISP's forums to see if anyone else is having similar problems), then the chances are that your laptop simply isn't up to the task of running this particular game, although you may be able to tweak the settings enough to get it running.

I don't think you've told us what the processor is, but I have serious doubts as to whether your laptop meets the recommended specifications for this game, which are much higher than WoW, and as has been said already Skyrim's requirements are very different as it isn't an online game.

    8gb DDR3 ram
    Intel i5 4200 2.5Ghz (3ghz when in game)
    750gb Hard drive
    Wireless

I think I have more than enough to run this game, what do you think? Also what you say is false. I've watched reviews before I purchased this game sir and they had they same issues except the game actually crashed on the loading screen. There is nothing wrong with my laptop.

The game hasnt crashed on loading screen since beta really, long load times sounds like an internet issue, I tried to play gw2 on a mobile dongle once, took 30 mins to load lol

Well my download speeds are fine. Great.. actually.. It could be packet loss but its only on this game. I load WoW up within 10 seconds and on this game, sometimes it varies. I can get a load screen from 30 seconds to 10 minutes. Its really random.

I suspect then that it's your wireless connection that's the problem, it really isn't suitable for most gaming requirements and the long loading time could well be because the launcher keeps losing connection. Try a network cable connection and see if that makes a difference.

The game crashing on the loading screen is a totally different problem to the one you have.

I am surprised you can't run this game at 27fps. When I have 27fps I have a completely smooth game experience. It is only at 10 and under that it starts shacking and lagging.

Also I am playing on a Mac on medium graphics and the game runs fine and I only have an Intel HD 4000 graphics card which is crappy. So your computer should be running it perfectly fine with your graphics card.

Putting a high end graphics card in a computer without enough RAM and / or with an older processor is a waste of money. You will get lousy performance until you upgrade your processor and / or RAM or both === IF that is the problem.

Just bragging that I have a video card with DDR5 memory doesn't mean you have a screaming machine.

Now that may NOT be your problem ... or maybe it is.

What is exactly the connection between the web browser having the accelerated graphics on and the game performance issues?

    I'm not saying I have a screaming machine friend.. I'm saying that I have more than enough. I'm rocking a Intel i5 4200 2.5ghz processor, which oc's to 3.0ghz.
My card is Nvidia Geforce 750m 2gb GDDR5 and to top it off. I have 8gb DDR3 ram. So I think I'm okay for what I have. I'm not expecting it to run on ultra, I'm expecting it to run on at least high with no FPS drops.. I expect loading screens to be done in 30 seconds to a minute.. Not 10..

I have same laptop of you but with an nvidia 640m , i counted loading time since login and it is 37 secs for me. I had big load time only 2 times , once for my internet conn issues and another in Cyrodiil big during big zerg crash ,months ago.

I run completely wireless and have never had any major lag, fps or related issues because of it. I rarely disconnect from any of the MMOs I have played with this connection.

I'm guessing that you've closed out the launcher after the game is at the login screen? Close out any background programs you don't need in task manager?

I also wonder if the game could be conflicting with your Antivirus. I've never had a problem but I hear some people run into issues with their firewall blocking things. Something to look into too I suppose.

I wish I could be more helpful. You might want to poke around the technical issues section of the forums.

It's cool that the community is trying to help. Unfortunately, the problem is on ZOS' end. I've tried on multiple machines and I even did a clean install of Windows to isolate the issue on a nice gaming PC. I have tried multiple ISP at a family member's house, friend's house, office and my home. Every test case has yielded problems with this game.

Also, support and ZOS will not openly admit that their game runs like garbage. That is why they keep rattling off things for us to do or extra troubleshooting steps that rare or do not work.

Been playing since beta and every patch seems to be taking two steps forward and five back. Zos has amazing artists but probably the worst coders/developers in the industry.
