Alright, this is going to be a loooong post of me just looking back on my history with ESO, reminiscing over memories.
One year ago on this very day (Sept. 4th), I, an aspiring young beta tester and loyal ES fan, created my very own ESO account and beta forum profile, and set to work preparing for what would be a long and joyous adventure through Tamriel during the ESO beta and live launch. To this day, I still play ESO and will gladly continue doing so for as long as I possibly can.
Over this one year period, I have seen ESO develop from being a very unstable, very odd looking game when I joined the beta team, to being a grand triple A MMO title that many people play and enjoy. I thought, since I just recieved my one year badge today, I would do a little recap on my thoughts and experiences I have had from my one year in Tamriel.
It all started on Bleakrock Island during my first ever beta test. During those days, the old crafting system was in place and the first thing I tried doing was crafting a mighty sword to slay my enemies. Sadly, all I could manage to craft was either a dagger, a slightly better dagger, or nothing. I then realised, after seeing a familiar name run past me, that a friend of mine had also gotten in the beta. I confronted him in game, and then we grouped up and began questing in ESO, shortly after, however, I killed a pig with a bow and the server immediately crashed as soon as the pig hit the floor, I thought I had broken the beta at that point.
After that first beta test, I was sold on ESO and began saving up for a collectors edition (which had not even been announced at the time), and any doubts I had about ESO back when I used to participate in the Facebook discussions were instantly evaporated.
Over the course of a few months after that first beta event in September, I was invited to several other beta tests, ranging from stress to focus tests in higher up zones. I had even developed a ritual that I performed for a few days after each beta test, where I would go to the store and stock up on provisions I would need for the upcoming weekend tests, which included chips, microwave food, lots and lots of mountain dew (usually 3-5 cases), beef jerky, and basically anything that I could get my hands on to keep my fed and awake so I could play and test as much as possible. I think more than once I stayed up for 24+ hours straight just non-stop playing.
Among these special tests was the first ever Cyrodiil test, where I probably only got 4 hours of sleep the entire weekend.
After several testing phases came and went, sometime around December I believe, I got the email of my life. I had received an invitation to join the 24/7 beta test group for ESO. It took me several minutes of re-reading the email because I was almost sure it was someone pulling my leg or some scam email, but sure enough the code worked and I thus became a member of the Psijic Order tester group.
After I got that email, I made sure I would play ESO whenever I could from December until launch. I also participated in other stress and focus tests in between that time, but a large portion of my time was spent on the Psijic realm leveling my Nightblade character. During that time, a good portion of people that are in the gaming community that I am a member of also got in, and we formed a branch of our community in ESO, and we played together all the time.
During my time on the PTS, I formed close friendships with people that are part of the ESO community that I still play with to this day, and also created rivalries that also still exist to this day, unfortunately. For the majority of my time on the PTS, I took things very slowly, hunting bugs wherever I could find them, trying to find ways in which I could purposefully break the game and cause problems so that I could then report them. I also spent a good amount of time raising my sword and fighting in the fields and forests of Cyrodiil for the Daggerfall Covenant, the alliance that I still to this day fight for in Cyrodiil.
On the last PTS day, a few days before launch, I looked back on all the things I had seen and accomplished, and even checked my /played time. I know it was definitely over 14 days, so over 336 hours of play time total, and that was just for one character. I had around 5 characters I believe, my main one being around veteran 3 before the server shut down, and a few others ranging from 20-40 I believe. I fondly remember, and probably will never forget, the last five minutes of the PTS server being up. I was in Cyrodiil, near Fort Warden, looking for an AD to fight since I wanted to go down fighting. I found one in the last 30 seconds on the server being up as they were doing the countdown, and with a sword and shield equipped, I shield charged him at the last second, knocked him down, then servers went offline a second after he hit the ground.
After that, I underwent a few days of ESO withdrawal as I could not play the game, then the moment the servers came up for early access, I went right to work making a new character and leveling it up to v10. I remember wanting to get to v10 so badly that I would even play ESO in the middle of class with the volume off, doing dungeons with guild mates while teachers were giving lectures on X, Y, or Z subjects (I don't remember anything from those class days :P ). I even remember standing up and cheering one time when we got a boss down on a veteran dungeon that we had been struggling on all class, and thankfully no one noticed (I think).
To this day, I have become the Guild Leader of that branch of the gaming group I mentioned earlier, I have been playing the game ever since launch, I have a v12 Nightblade and a v1 Dragon Knight with a few other non-veteran alts, and I continue to enjoy the game to this day and am always looking forward to the new content that they plan to release.
I plan on sticking with ESO for a very long time, and would just like to thank everyone at Zenimax Online Studios for a great year of Tamrielic adventures, and I look forward to hopefully many more years of adventures to come.
