Quick question re: Heavy Armor Skill

Does your heavy armor line continue to level up if you slot and use the immovable skill even if you don't have any heavy armor on?
Just curious, have a character with 42 heavy, but want to switch to a more optimal 5 light/ 2 med. config, but would like to go on and get heavy to 50 in case Zenimax ever fixes it.
