How big a threat is the coming autumn/fall games rush, to ESO?

Hey guys, so recently I found myself playing the dragon age series of games, and earlier today looked up the next instalment which launches on November 20th in the EU and a few days before in the states. Without name dropping...it looks freaking awesome, then we also have a bungie inspired shooter action/rpg adventure game coming in less than a month, as well as a new LOTR game coming this October, all 3 of these titles look really good in promise right now, and no doubt there are many more besides which I have not mentioned. Not to forget the recent coming of new consoles, with some pretty good games out already, or coming soon. So I find myself asking the question I have asked as a title, but also to add to that, can ESO find a foothold despite those, and other MMO titles recently on the scene or coming soon, which also show promise? And if the answer to that is yes, do you think if this title fulfils its promise as good as it can be, is developed as good as it can be and is done without any hiccups, in the face of some unbelievable competition on all sides, will it truly be enough for ESO to have a good following?

So, thoughts?

PS, my own 2 cents, I want it to do enough at least to interest more potential subs, but I am not too sure it can, that being said I hope this game has the financial security to be able to bide its time and eventually evolve into something masterful. If not, I have serious fears about ESOs future. [Hopefully I am being melodramatic and it's bright :) ]

Minimal effect. People play more than one game at a time. ESO already has it's "foothold". What your missing from your equation is the news that ESO puts out at the same time.

The games you mentioned and the consoles are single player opportunities. ESO is an MMO, therefore no big threat as they attract totally different player groups.

A game that could take people away is Everquest next and Space Citizen as both games are very unique in their approach. That said they wont come out this year and maybe not even in 2015.

I always thought that Archage had a chance to attract ESO players, but they screwed their own game up by having the whole Sandbox tools hidden behind a paywall.

Actually I watched the near 2 hour video about this games future so I know full well what promise there is. I am aware people play more than one game at any one time. You are right, ESO does already have a foothold yet that is mostly from loyal fans such as I who have followed the series and love it. I have my misgivings on this game in its present state but I actually REALLY want this game to fly, and that means it needs MORE than casual MMO gamers and ESO fanatics. Its subscribers need to rival WoW in its heyday, and surpass it. [btw, never played WoW just FTY :P ] Hench why I am pensive about the situation as is.

As much as any other game release affects any other MMO. People will play their MMO a little less while they play the new game then return to their normal schedule once done.

For example. My own game time in ESO has slipped this last few weeks because they released a new version of Dungeon Defenders. Not everyone's cup of tea but, for me, one of the most addictive games I've ever played :) Instead of playing ESO for 4 hours a day, I now play 2 with the other 2 allotted for DDE.

Good point. Do you mean a new version of the dungeon defender game they had as a games with gold on xbox live? Yea, I know what you mean about addictive and I tried that for a while yet the constant grind eventually just got to me. I do understand what you mean but the thing is some of the titles coming soon can rival many MMOs longevity. [Some have 100s of hours of content]

You and I may know full well what is coming, but the general player and certainly general public don't. The actual release news of those features is what will break through.

As you point out, "ESO does already have a foothold yet that is mostly from loyal fans". All the more reason why there hasn't anything to worry about. LOYALTY.

No game will ever rival WOW in it's hey day. Including WOW. Too much competition and choice.

Yes, because at the time playing WoW was the cool thing. [I totally missed that craze, too busy playing xbox and PS2 titles, woops] There was not much choice and the alternative was seen as "not cool". Just for the record I am just loosely quoting what seemed popular belief at the time, the validity of the previous, well for all I know I could be talking out my a**e.

    Dungeon Defenders Eternity.

With the other games like you're referring to I can only speak from experience again. eg When Skyrim came out my WoW time dropped to raids only and my overall play time increased dramatically. Effectively I made time for both, though, the vast majority was on Skyrim for the first month or so after release.

All I know is that the Sims 4 is going to eat up a large chunk of my gaming time when it comes out in a couple of weeks, but I don't plan on cancelling my ESO sub.

It's a new experience for me playing multiple games at once, because when I played WoW, I played that exclusively with no other games on the side for 4 years. Also I didn't have a full time job then. So now I'm learning how to juggle time.

It won't affect it in a negative way. Fall/Winter are big game buying times. It is also when people are in doors more. ESO has already been out a while meaning people looking to pick up a game will be able to buy it on a discount, plus with all the updates and the justice coming out by then it will give people more of a reason to try. I think Fall and Winter will see an influx of new and returning players.

Yeah I see the population of ESO has stabilized and more people seem to be coming into the game all the time now. As long as ZOS continues to work on improving the game, I don't think we have anything to worry about.

ESO is in a good position right now as there are no new great MMO's expected to be released for awhile. The games you mentioned are not MMOs so there should be little to no worry.

The last MMO who appeared was Wildstar, and it did not hurt ESO. The next few titles that are due to be released are going to be free 2 play games and those will attract a lot of attention, but as ESO is Pay 2 Play it wont be too bad. There are a great majority of players who prefer the Pay 2 Play model, me included. Mostly from what iv seen of Arch Age being more of pay 2 win model, no thanks. lol.

ESO is in a good position, but currently the game has to many bugs and core issues that needs fixing. Instead of focusing their resources on fixing those bugs they are instead working on adding more content, which only introduces more bugs and issues. If ESO does not FIX their game then it will be doomed at the first good MMO that is released. It may already be to late as more people are loosing faith.

    Bugs:
1: Passives and Active abilities that are not working as intended.
2: Gear that are not working as intended.
3: Spell Penetration not working as intended (or if it is needs to be changed)
4: Damage Shield stacking that have additional properties like Harness Magicka and Blazing Shield.
    5: Unbreakable Stuns.
    6: Many Many more bugs.

    Other Key issues:
1: Stamina Weapon and stamina build.
    2: Blocking balancing
3: Forward Camp fast travel in PvP
4: Class balancing. (No nerfs are needed, but a few slight tweaks)
    5: Worthless traits on gear.
    6: Many Many more issues.

Adding content while the above issues are not addressed wont help the game, but destroy it.

Yes. I think similar to this. It worries me this game came out only just over 4 months ago, and it already seemingly needs a lot of quality of life time. I suppose that is part of the people are loosing faith, thing. It may hurt ZOS this year, hopefully it will not be too bad.

I don't cancel MMO subs that I'm enjoying just because a new game comes out. Ill be playing through DA3, Destiny, and Divinity all while retaining my ESO and FFXIV subs. This is also considering I really only get an hour or 2 a night to play.

Some may already have arranged a transferal, PC games are infinitely more mod-able true as it is, but some have social commitments they would prefer to keep. As for sales when ESO does go on console, here is hoping you're right. The games early life may have damaged those.

Although Star Citizen is going to be a blast, the game is on alpha stages and already blows, it is so different from the fantasy MMOs that i dont think will affect ESO much, EQN looks like is going to be main competitor of every fantasy MMO. Apart from these games everythig else looks mediocre, i might be wrong

30 a day...I would not call that "losing their minds" In actual fact its a bit lukewarm if you ask me. Had you said 3000, or 30,000 or heck, even 300, that would be more like it. But 30 is a bit worrisome.

If EQN can deliver on half the things they promise then it will be one of the best MMOs to hit the genre in the past 10 years. What MMO has ever delivered on all their promises though.

I do think EQN will be a great game and it's the only Free 2 Play MMO I have ever been excited about. I just don't think it will be as great as some people hope.

EQN will shake up the MMO Industry with new features and game mechanics, and that will be a good thing. So even if EQN fails it will still breath much needed change into the industry.

I also do not expect EQN to hit markets until at least late 2015 to early 2016. Should now more after the next SOE event. Could even be 2017

I... am looking forward to when Black Desert comes out. Not sure when it will be, but I'd imagine we'll have it some time in 2015. Perhaps Spring? I know it's free to play in Korea, or will be rather, but there isn't anything set on that as far as NA/EU go as of yet. Whether that hurts ESO or not, I don't know. If so, I don't think it will do too much really. Loyal fan whatnotery, etc.
