The thinking person's grouping - let's talk friendly fire.

I'm just thinking out loud really, but I've noticed that in grouped sessions (or at Dolmens or World Boss sites) most MOBS simply die a death in a broiling mass of spell energy; the fact that I and others are stood in the middle of it all, unharmed and dealing hand to hand damage feels kind of odd.

Now of course it's fine the way it is and ESO is designed and balanced that way so that the appropriate MOBs are tough enough to be trouble whilst taking that sort of damage, but it does foster an "unload all you've got" approach to group combat.

I can't help thinking that that friendly fire might offer a interesting and slightly more cerebral approach to grouped combat (as long as the MOBs were balance accordingly). It might be particularly interesting in Cyrodill which has a more medieval battlefield feel about it - softening up the enemy with missile combat (or taking out the enemy's artillery) before launching a ground offensive and talking to the rest of the team before charging in case they take you out as well.

Of course ESO isn't a strategic war game and I love it the way it is, but I thought that it might be an interesting point for discussion.
I am one of The Great Mediocracy, those whose role in life is to provide the baseline by which The Few deem themselves Great.

They rarely do friendly fire in FPSs these days. Never happen here.

I already mentioned that I think players should receive a stacking debuff to AoE damage when hit by another friendlies AoEs. This would prevent stuff from dying so fast and also make zergballs spread out a bit.

Wouldn't that call for open world PvP? I don't think you would find many people playing if that were the case.

Of course this would mean completely forgetting the truism that 'any time someone can be a d*** to someone else in a MMO - it happens. Period.'

Nay, let us leave this on the scrapheap of really bad ideas. Like starting a land war in Asia bad.

I can already see my melee characters in a trash pull, dying in a sea of 'friendly' flames. As if their life wasn't hard enough. -_-

Of course any such idea would simply result in griefers intentionally killing other players.

Oh I don't know. FF sounds like a good idea to me. Open World PvP too. :-)

Yes, because close combat stamina builds are already so overpowered and easy to play.

Those poor ranged casters with their wooden sticks and pretty dresses surely need some long range boost so they can stay out of trouble when fighting at a dolmen!

There is no friendly fire because that would open to players killing one another , which is not something well received by many.

There is no open world PvP , im quite sure we wont be seeing open world PvP either until atleast they divide the servers into PvE and PvP , which considering the mega server doesnt seem to be happening any time soon.

For the first few days I was always careful to not hit my companions or followers or group members or PCs fighting near me.

Until I figured out that there is no friendly fire in this game, unlike other TES games where we could kill our friendlies. Coming from that set up to this, I am thankful that we don't have friendly fire.

As for the unload with everything you got on Bosses and Dolmens, well, that is kind of the point, isn't it? :D
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I can say that after doing several dungeons in Cyrodiil with cross-faction players (guild mates), the friendly fire does change the way one has to approach combat.

It's a nice and uneasy feeling, and you have to make sure that you tab-targeted the correct "enemy" before launching the attack.

And avoid AoE like hell in those cases :)

Is fun, for a change... but it would cripple the game too much if it were always like that.
