Out-leveling equipment sets

There are a lot of nice equipment sets that drop as loot in the game, but they're so rare that I often find that I have out-leveled the usefulness of the set by the time I get close to completing the set.

True. This becomes less of an issue in the Veteran levels as your levels stay pretty consistent for longer periods of time.

There's also some great crafted sets from the special crafting areas on every map. Find a set you like, and then keep popping back to make an upgraded set as you go!

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

As soon as you get the first dropped piece of the set, start asking in /Zone for the other pieces.

Also, you can upgrade the greens to blue to help them last a while longer.

I am using a crafted set on my Level 32 mage, and I craft her all blues, which are good for about 5+ levels worth of progression.

A blue level 30 item is going to be better stat wise than a green level 33 or 34 item.

Once I start looting or getting quest reward gear that is around 1 point of the stats on my blue gear, then I upgrade the crafted set.

This^^ but I found in the last few days that my crafted 'blue' level 6 light armour actually lasted me(protection wise) until level 14. I'm now level 19 and my level 14 set is still more than ample.

My main is atm VR10 she is still wearing a VR6 blue set with no need to upgrade. :)

I'm just questing so I'm not really worried about my gear. I just crafted Elberta a set of level 30 green armor from the Twilight's Embrace (5 for the crit) and Seducer (3 for the spell cost reduction) sets and I don't plan on replacing them until I reach level 40.... unless I find some really awesome new crafting stations between now and then.

I've noticed that once you reach about 4 levels above the level of the armor it degrades significantly faster than when I was at level or 1 or 2 levels over.

I guess that makes sense, was just wondering if anyone else had noticed this also?

Yes, dropped sets are pretty much useless until you get to VR12 (for now anyways). Before that, it's rare to ever find enough pieces to make wearing it worth while.

Not useless from my perspective: I have eight main characters and I'm in no great hurry to get to max level on any of them.

I craft sets for my alts every 10 levels and only sometimes use dropped sets. For example, my alt would get 2 crafted sets (traditionally a 5 piece and a 3 piece) plus a stable level 20 warlock set until veteran rank 1, it's relatively nifty as it means I can switch from the training trait to an actual proper set as required. Because of this, I only really use the Warlock ring set or the Kaviri Dragon Guard set until veteran rank 1, I find gathering a dropped set painful and sometimes expensive. That being said, the new set bonus revamp has made some old sets appealing (looking at you Necromancer set), so this may change in the future.
